I really love your entry. But the lamps you've selected just add more metal. You have wrought iron staircase, metal candleholders, metal table, metal (or metal-look) mirror, metal console bowl. It comes off a bit cold. That's probably why you miss the warmth and color of the Christmas decorations.

I really like the candleholders, but how about some candles in them? Maybe a beautiful orchid, and a lamp in the colors you use in your adjoining rooms. A set of stacked baskets would hide your cord. It would also help offset the contrast between the heaviness of the mirror and the less substantial console.

Thanks Dee. Actually, the candleholders, bowl and mirror are all wood. Although, I can see why they look metal in the picture. Would that change your mind at all about the lamps?

what kind of base of a lamp would you suggest? I agree a more colorful shade would be ideal.

We have a red and gold rug in there and a large plant as well. Waiting to find a plant stand to put it on, just sitting on the ground now.

I don't think it would change my mind a whole lot, because I think your area still needs some softening and texture.

I know there's no color in this lamp, but I really love this Barbara Cosgrove lamp, though it is a bit pricey at $600.

I have had great luck at LampsPlus website. You can narrow your search down by lamp size, color, price range, etc. A lot of times they have free shipping, and also will have picture of the lamp shown in a room, to give you even better idea of size, etc.

I agree that a little color would really be pretty, such as a touch of red. Good luck.

Well count me as someone who thinks many metals give off a warm feel. Maybe it's because my Daddy was a tinner, but I don't get that cold feel from metal that Dee does, though I'll admit that some metals do feel that way. Again we go with "use what you love in your own home".

I've seen the Pier on lamp and love it. I wish I had a place to put it because I have a hundred dollar gift card I won burning a hole in my pocket! I'm waiting until spring to see what's new before I spend it.

Here's an idea of what it might look like on your entry table. Not sure the sizes are correct, but the lamp is 27 inches tall and most entry table range in the 29" give or take range.

I love the idea of a lamp there, something in red to bring some color up to the table.

Perhaps something like this?

I would take the decorative balls out of the bowl and replace them with a plant or floral arrangement, again to bring some color and softness. Then candles on the candlesticks, in red or gold, two pillars the same diameter but different heights (like a 4 inch and a six inch). Pull the one with the shorter candle a bit forward of the other one, for a layered feel.

oceanna, I was eyeing those ones up that you posted, especially the first one, and then I clicked on the link. A little on the pricey side, huh! and actually, I liked the one you made better than the 2nd one!

so, as I continue my search... I came across this one, it might be kind of ugly but something about it I like. Maybe it's because the bottom lights up by itself and it remembers of the lamps my grandmother used to have - at this point, I have looked at so many lamps in so many different styles, my head is a little dizzy!

Yes they are horribly pricey -- that's why I made my own. You can buy the wire frames in different shapes/sizes, and sew your own shade in any fabrics you choose.

Please also note that eBay sells lovely ones at better prices.

I'm not nutty about the lamp in your url, but if you love it, get it. Again, there are tons of choices on eBay from modern and new to antiques. Also, LampsPlus is online as well as in lots of towns. They are pretty good.

It's all about your taste, except that you do want it the right size. To see what is the "right size" you might want to peruse the Foyers/Halls Gallery file as there are tons of gorgeously decorated hall table photos in there. Have fun!

Something about that lamp reminds me of my grandmother, she used to have mosiac candy dishes all around her house and she also had a lamp that lit up on the bottom like that. I thinks that why it appealed to me. I'm having a difficult time b/c that mirror is so big, that I don't want to put anything to over the top for a lamp in fear they would compete. does that make sense, I have no decorating skill whatsoever :( so I could be completely wrong.

I did check out the gallery, it is so nice of you to put those together for everyone. The one thing that seems to be true that I wasn't sure on, is a could put a buffet style lamp on each side of the table. This was suggested by Walnutcreek and I think that might be the way to go. I like the look of two tall candlestick lamps on a table. Asymmetry is more modern; Victorian decor used a lot of symmetry. But there are no hard and fast rules.
