Cree CR6?
Comments (14)triphase, I think you and David are saying the same thing. You said to put cans 12-20" from the cabinets or crown moulding. David is saying to put cans 29"-36" from the WALL. Assuming 12" uppers with 4" crown moulding, this equates to approx 16" of depth. 16" + your recommendation of 12" - 20" from the crown is the same as 28" - 36" from the wall as what David was saying. However, I do agree that measurements should be based on off the cabinet door face or crown, since some people may have deeper uppers and may or may not have crown moulding. Or given both ways, since the rough in would be measured off the adjacent walls. I will be posting my plan by this weekend so look forward to your and David's lighting layout recommendations....See MoreCree CR6 install?
Comments (9)I installed one today to see how they look. Our cans are 6" Halo IC. Very easy. Only thing that annoyed me is that here in Kalifornia, the version of the CR-6 has a GU-24 connection on the back. So you have to cut the wires to the Edison style socket and splice in the (provided) GU-24 socket. Not a big deal - except if you are trying a few and want to see how they work in different rooms. Makes things slightly non-reversible. The CR-6 works really well though. Definitely brighter than the 65 watt Sylvania bulbs that it replaced. Dims well too - but not quite as dim as the incandescents. During dimming, does not turn orange at low levels. And of concern to me, only a very low level of RFI (radio frequency interference.) In this respect, the Philips LED bulbs that I have tried are extremely quiet. The Home Depot Ecosmart A19 LED bulbs can be noisy....See Morecree cr6
Comments (15)Hmm, it's rated 575 lumens and uses 10.5 watts. That's about 55 lumens per watt. That's showing some improvement, but it's still well below a good CF in efficacy - and it's quite a bit more costly. By comparison, the low mercury 12,000 hour Neolite retrofit Edison base CFs I've mentioned here before yield 72 lumens per watt and cost $4.50 each. Compared to those, the Crees use 32% more electricity for a given amount of light, and cost 3.8 times as much per average life hour - and 11 times as much per lumen-hour. Ouch. On the downside, the Neolite CFs aren't dimmable. Also, if you're married to downlights, the Cree may make better use of its lumens since they're all aimed downward....See MoreCree CR6 and other LED Resources
Comments (6)My problem is that I would like my lumens to be at least 800 for my home office as I like a lot of light when I am working now since I turned 51 this year. My eyes need more light. The 800 lumen's Cree are so expensive but Davidtay indicates that bulbs inside a can lose lumen's as the heat gets trapped so the retrofit is the way to go. My other problem is I just prefer 3,000K lighting than 2,700K lighting for effect in the room on color and how it makes me feel. The BR30 and BR40 will be great for general lighting in the LED Cree but I have a feeling it will not give great lighting on my desk and I may want a Par38 in a 6" can. Please correct me if I am wrong....See Moresuburbanjuls
