It's says your birthday is January 1st as far as I can see. It says that for a lot of people who don't list their real birthdays.
It's not a big deal to me. I don't look at peoples info page unless I'm trying to e-mail them, and need an address.
And I don't care who knows mine.

Call me over cautious, but I NEVER give my actual statistics when I register for a casual website (there is one where my real name and statistics are on file, because it's a legitimate site, limited to people with a certain interest, charges a fee, and members all use their real names because we're well-known across the country, IRL.)

But for something like a site where the only purpose is chit chat--the easiest thing is to just give fake info when you join.

And I agree with you. It's TOO important, for safety's sake, to have your info out for anyone to see, on one of thse widely read, open websites.

I just entered wrong month and year, I'm now 104 years old. lol.

Well, when I joined we had to pay. It wasn't a free thing like now. I know, it was free before too, but not when I joined.

Just go to the bottom of any page here and click on Member Pages and follow the links.

Things changed when iVillage took over and the Member pages were one of them. Some people didn't want their birthdate listed so they put in whatever they wanted to. The year is not shown.

You will see a many members birthdates listed as January 1st. I think that was the default date when none was listed. And there are no names on the My Pages.

Personally I don't see how having a date without a year could be a problem, especially when there is no name listed.

Well Like Azzalea I give fake info on most websites. Birthdays however are shared by so many people worldwide that I don't see the security risk of someone knowing mine.

Now people posting pics of their families on the net...that scares me. Anyone can right click and save those pictures and later put them anywhere they'd like sometimes after altering them in not so nice ways.

I've seen pics of young children in front of their homes, near vehicles with the license plate showing and once someone even posted their child's report card with the child's home address,full name, school and class schedule on it right here for anyone to view.

Birthdays I just can't get excited about. There are only 365 days and 80 -90 years or so shared by the world's population. No big security risk there. Privacy maybe if you don't like telling your age but security...nah.

The date of birth is one of the important pieces of personal information that has substantial value to people practising identity theft.

Quite a number of agencies that want personally important information about you to use as an identifier use your date of birth - some of my mutual fund management people, and banks, do. When they ask that, and I tell them, they're willing to discuss details of my account with me.

Including requests for changes, I'm sure, including requests for liquidation and sending (part of) the assets to me, I think.

But if I were to ask them to send it to a different address than the one on file, I wonder whether they'd want more identifying information - some don't have much more on file, I think.

There are two components to it - the date, and the year. As many know how old I am, the matter of the year is not of great importance, can be easily calculated.

While a few friends know the date of my birth, it is not generally known, publicly.

While I haven't given it much thught in this context, I think that perhaps I should have done so.

No identity theft issues so far ... that I know of ...

... and I'm not desirous of finding out, either.

So I think that it behooves me to watch that information more closely.

A number of surveys want my birthdate. I refuse to give it ... and have told some that, if they insist, I will lie.

Mine is known here - last year there were 2 or 3 dozen well-wishers when it appeared, I think.

I didn't enter mine neither. It defaulted to Jan. 1 too.

I too was a paying member/founding member. I just don't believe this information should 'automatically' appear under the birthday wishes. We should have an option button next to the details.

As for ID theft - you'd be amazed how easy it is to track down details on the internet and piece your ID together. If you thank it can't be done, think again. It's been done and reported in the news from time to time.

I never thought about the danger of posting BDs, but posting the family pictures kinda bothers me. Mine are all so gorgeous I wouldn't want any kook to get any kooky ideas. I've been open about where we live, and I think maybe anonymity might be a better way to go!

I've started a different birth date on things like this. Legal documents are one thing, but websites, etc. are different. I know it's supposed to be to make sure you're over 18, but what's to stop a 15-yr-old from putting in a birthday that'll say they're older?

It's just a month and day. Without a year, I don't see how it can contribute to identity theft.

When you go to any search engine, like people search/yahoo etc, all a person has to do is type in a name/city and state and even though several names come up, if you know the person's name/approx age etc and send as little as 9.95 you will get alot more More money more information=credit cards bank accts SS etc. No I have never tried it because again I do not want to give out the information they ask for.
Birthdays--we have to give that everytime we go to our Doctor's It is their way to make sure they have the right person, and if there are two birthdays/same name/ they then ask further questions.
