I prefer mine served on the side, so I can have the right amt on my salad I desire.

I prefer it on the side too as restaurants tend to drown salads in dressing. I prefer just a little dressing on my salads.

I usually make all my salad dressings from scratch and then I don't mind adding it to my salad but eating out....on the side, please.

Back in the day, my favorite commercially bottled salad dressing was Catalina. But they reformulated it to be sweeter (and full of HFCS, but it was the extra sweetness that turned me off) in the 1990s or maybe it was the late 1980s. Right now, it is Annie's Balsamic Vinaigrette. Tart, creamy, not too sweet. No ingredient crud. I intensely dislike sweet salad dressings. When I want sugar, I'll have a dessert. If I want my salad with some level of sweetness, I'll add actual fruit into the salad itself. For a regular vinaigrette, home-made: Juice of 1/2 lemon Add rice vinegar to make 50 mL / 1.7 fluid ounces total volume atop the lemon juice (I used one of those Ball half-pint canning jars, and just added everything directly to that. The metric side of the scale on the jar was more convenient to me.) 1.5 teaspoon Dijon mustard 75 mL / 2.5 fluid ounces of oil. I recommend a 1:1 mixture (approximately 37.5 L/1.25 ounces of each) extra virgin olive oil to avocado oil. See below, and no, I don’t expect this to be measured out Exactly! Two teaspoons Penzy’s Herbes de Provence dried herbal concoction. 1/8 teaspoon salt, or to taste 1/4 teaspoon cracked pepper (approximate) I put it in that Ball canning jar, cap, and shake the devil out of it.

Deb, that bread machine makes loaves weekly for me, for Elery, for Amanda, the Monkey Princess' "sugar bread", all the sandwich rolls we use, and now I've been making honey wheat for Elery's Dad, he loves the stuff. It made all the rolls for the sandwiches at our reception and for the wedding guests at the "Redneck Bonanza", plus all the dinner rolls for every holiday since I've gotten it. It's made at least 500 loaves of bread and THOUSANDS of dinner rolls, cinnamon rolls, sandwich rolls. Dishesdone even sent me a book called Electric Bread and I made every single loaf in the book, starting at the front and working my way to the end. Oh yeah, I use it a lot and haven't found a single recipe or dough that it doesn't excel at, so I think of you often and I can't tell you how much I appreciate it. Elery says it is the one kitchen appliance that he knows we'd replace immediately if something happened to it. And the Princess? She weighs a red hot 42 pounds. Bruvver weighs 39 and he's two years younger. Just like me and Aunt Ashley, she's the smallest one in her class, but not the quietest. (grin) Now, just to keep from hi-jacking the thread, I made the paella salad last weekend when Elery was here. Yes, I have a picture, I'll post it tonight. First of all I would add the juice of a half of a lime to that recipe...I think it'll be flat without something acedic. How about a croissant and s veggie garnish on the plate...like a small amount of marinated veggies or a few broccoli florets...and serve the salad on a leaf of bib lettuce....and how about pound cake with lemon sauce for dessert? linda C

Cyn, Marcella Hazan's recipe is almost exactly what we make. The only difference is we add about a cup or so of grated Parmesan to the béchamel itself (basically you make Bolognese sauce, and bechamel, you add Parmesan to the béchamel and then you mix the bechamel and the sauce- Hazan has you sprinkle Parmesan on top of the layers of meat/bechamel, we only sprinkle on top of the whole lasagne at the end and dot with butter.) Here is Marcella's recipe. The Bolognese looks daunting, but it's really easy. Simmering the meat with the milk is quite nice. It depends on the type of salad. For thicker dressings (like Thousand Island) and garden type salads I usually prefer it on the side as I kind of like to dip it.

For Italian style salads (my favorite) or even caesars, I prefer the dressing to be mixed in --actually I believe for Italian style you are supposed to put in bowl, cover and kind of shake it so it all gets coated. I don't think I'd like a real Italian kind on the side.

Either way is okay. I often make salads using recipes. Sometimes I'll add the dressing before serving or I'll put it in a Good Seasons bottle so people can add their own. I have at least 4 bottles of open salad dressing in my fridge right now. If I order in a restaurant, I'll take it either way.

I prefer it on the side when I'm eating out for several reasons. I use minimal dressing, and agree, most restaurants drown salads with it. Also, since they sometimes drown salads to hide the fact that the greens are getting old, if you ask for the dressing on the side, you're more likely to get fresher greens, since they know they cannot hide the sad ones. Lastly, if you don't eat the entire salad and want to save some, it wilts faster with dressing than without.

Brings back memories Jack and Elaine LaLanne were dining near us in a Morro Bay eatery. We couldn't wait to see what they ate, but when they did get their salad, he had his dressing on the side to dip his salad into it... This was twenty years ago (They lived there -I know Jack is gone, but wonder if she still lies there....

I grew up loving this: torn lettuce, tossed with just mayo, salt and pepper and serve. Loved it when it got a little limp.

I always order mine on the side because I dont like a lot of dressing on mine. DH eats his without any dressing at all. I remember eating at a restaurant one time and I asked for ranch on the side and it came out with blue cheese on top of it. If it would have been ranch I would have eaten it. I cant even stand the smell of blue cheese much less eat it.

When ordering in a resturant, my wife ask for the dressing on the side and none on the salad. Most servers in our area are able to comply with this request.
