Interior Adobe Walls

I have been searching for the perfect warm beige for our interior adobe walls. Any suggestions? We are painting the drywall a warm white. We are moving in next month but the painters come on Monday. The photo is from the listing- we have taken down the bookcase(we own too many large paintings!) Thanks!

Welcome to our decorating forum here, Sharon! I'm also in NM. We have an all-adobe home with the majority of our interior walls being exposed adobe, sealed and then painted. The color we're using throughout is Valspar's Mount Rainier in their eggshell finish, purchased at Home Depot. In the can it looks like a very light brown but on the walls, trust me, it's a warm cream. We have a lot of large windows, window walls and skylights and this color looks equally good, throughout the day and evening. Even in the few rooms here without much natural light, it still is not too dark or light. Like you, we also have a lot of artwork and it works well with everything. It also works well with the cream background in Talavara tiles, which we have in different patterns in all 3 of our bathrooms as well as on the counter of our dining room's built-in hutch. Finding a color of cream that would work with them was a big problem when we originally had this place built 20 years ago, as so many creams can make Talavara tiles look awful.

I also highly recommend going with an eggshell finish. It makes walls so much easier to clean up when needed. Our builder originally used a flat finish and I regretted it for years until we could repaint in the eggshell.

Here are a few pics to give you an idea of the color. In some, it reads more white, but it is a true, warm cream.

My clay soil is hard like Jeri's - we used a heavy-duty rototiller and the rocks in the ground broke it. We trashed the rototiller given by my Mom from her farm. I tried amending my soil everyway possible: big pile of coarse sand, tons of peatmoss, free mulch and free horse manure. The time and energy spent breaking harden clay wasn't worth it. Finally I ordered a big pile of dirt, less than $114 for 3 cubic yards, or 81 cubic feet. It was alkaline clay but at least it's fluffy, no rocks, and no weeds. Dirt is cheap, and saved me time breaking up hard ground. This year I ordered Suncast 8-panel Raised Garden Kit, it has 8 panels, dark brown resin. You click them together to make any shape you want: square, rectangle, etc. Each panel is 4 feet long. So you can make 2 raised square boxes with 4 panels, or 1 big raised garden with 8 panels. It's $100 delivered to your door from HomeDepo. It takes 10 minutes to put together. The wooden ones are half the price, but they rot in my rainy weather, so I opted for resin. The Suncast raised bed kit for $100 would hold 8 roses. If you work with peat moss make sure you wear a mask. Years ago I breath in peat moss, had pneumonia, coughed up blood, tons of X-rays, a Bronchoscopy, and a medical bill of over $4,000 - insurance paid all, but it was a waste of time with countless trips for X-rays. If you work with horse manure, get your tetanus shot updated every 5 years, rather than 10 years, as Prevention Magazine recommended. Getting tetanus shot from the County Health is faster ($24 charge here), versus going through the doctor's office. In my 12 years of gardening in hard clay, believe me, it's easier to order a pile of dirt, and put in a raised bed. I did the other hard way too: hauling 30 bags of 40 lbs. topsoil from HomeDepo, busted my car's shocks. I don't think the garden was worth the car's repair bill. It was time-consuming to open each bag of soil.

Thanks for all your suggestions, Oceanna! Um, let's see . . . the other leather chair is dark green. Both chairs are in great shape and super comfortable for lounging and watching tv. The Santo lamp, BTW, is an antique chalkware piece that I had mounted on a lamp base. I love it, but was wondering that might "clash" with the Native American pieces. Then again, New Mexico is known as the land of three cultures, Hispanic, Anglo and Native American, and we mix our art, foods and architecture together all the time out here. It probably looks a bit weird to many people, but I'm glad that you can appreciate it. Below is a pic of it, taken a couple of years ago. "> I like your idea of a black tower. I'm thinking that it would be difficult to match the cherry of the console. What's draped over it now is a handwoven runner from Chimayo in dark green with a rusty red and cream design on it. Sorry, I didn't show a pic of that. It's a lot like this Chimayo runner, that we're now using on the sofa table. I could switch the two. And, just to really blow everyone away by the eclectic mix of our 3 cultures in this room, this is the artwork hanging over the patio doors in here. It does have a rather Spanish look to it, though. ;^P ">

Well, I spent (for me) big money on curtains for my living room in No. MN. But there's nothing that really looks as good as custom, lined curtains with perfect pinch pleats, weights and the whole nine yards, and a good professional to find the right rods and to hang them for you. I rationalized it by recognizing that I will not change them again in my lifetime.....a short lifetime or a long lifetime....whichever comes first! The shell of the room has to be complete--you can put one chair in the middle of the room and you have a room. But all the furniture you want to buy can't camouflage the fact that the floors, the walls and the curtains/WT are "yet to come." But it is a very bit bite out of a budget. Probably should be built into the mortgage!

Your home is so beautiful! I love your kitchen. We just have adobe interior walls but I think they give the house such character. The house is in Corrales. The painters had a cancellation so I am choosing the new colors in a hurry-they start on Monday! Thanks for the help!

Welcome to Corrales. I lived there for 3 years and will always miss the "Village", plus sunsets/rises, bright wild flowers and so much history respected.

My dream would be to go back there to live....life isn't allowing such. And enjoy the balloons landing on your property at the most unexpected times. Another wonderful memory with neighbors surrounding the area together to help pack up the balloon.

Enjoy your home, it looks beautiful. Enjoy the gifts of NM.
