Typing was one of the most useful things I ever learned.

Typing is the only business course I ever took in high school..It is also the one thing that I've been able to use the rest of my life. Girls were not allowed to take auto mechanics. Boys couldn't take Home Ec. Sad, huh?
I enjoyed many of my courses, but using the knowledge in real life? Not much. How often do I get asked when the Russian Revolution was?
The knowledge that gets you through life is from elementary school....basic math, English, etc.

Only took 6 weeks of typing one summer--but it's been VERY useful, of course.

High school--math, home ec, Spanish (my first teaching assignment was in an inner city school)

College--sewing, housing, equipment, decorating. I'd love to add my college cooking classes, but unfortunately, the prof was an idiot and didn't teach us a thing--just read the textbook to us every class.

for quick cash? Hands down cooking classes. I've made many thousands of $$$ with recipe contests. Second place would be sewing--had a good business going when dd was little where I designed, made and sold hand-smocked dresses.

Home Ec and Wood Shop!

It is a shame that some schools dont even offer your basic cooking and sewing anymore. Many skills have been lost. Now young people today have to rely on a professional to sew a basic hem. Even wood shop class has become a lost art. Some things are so easy to make if only a person knows how. Keep in mine that Craftsman use to sell homes in a kit and ordinary people put them together.

I guess I would say almost all of my education has come in handy in my life. My degree is in computer science, and I've found I've used lots of areas of my education. The high school French I took helped me, believe it or not, with programming language syntax, along with the math and some of the science.

However, my thoughts are a little different from LindaKathy's. Although social studies hasn't helped me with my money-making skills, it has helped me be a better person and a better citizen. I can understand current affairs better by knowing something of the history of different countries, by knowing some of their geography. Also, my kids go to schools with a lot of cultural and ethnic diversity, and I'm glad I have a working knowledge of world history sometimes.

Just reading the newspaper and trying to understand the current events of the day I draw on my economics, biology, physics, etc. I guess I would say that none of my education has been useless, it's one of the most valuable things I have, after my faith and my family.

Typing and home ec. My daughters just graduated HS, they don't even offer those classes anymore. I think schools should offer "real life" training, like how to travel on public transportation, how to write checks and balance a checkbook, how to write a resume, etc.

My mother was a Home Ec teacher and taught me well. I don't know how I could of raised a family of boys without at least knowing how to sew/mend knees and crotches on blue jeans.
I would of liked to of taken auto shop, but it wasn't offered at my HS.

I don't believe our high schools offer typing either. Most kids know their way around a keyboard by the time they're 7 years old nowadays anyway . . .

I work at a community college, and we don't offer typing (actually, it was called "Basic Keyboarding") or shorthand, either. I have 6 college credit hours in shorthand . . . what a waste.

I have been surprised at how much I have used from my high school and college classes. It seems I have especially used information from classes where I distinctly remember grumbling that I was being required to learn stuff I would never use. You never know where life will take you and what you will need as you face new situations, or even same old situations.

Our high schools offer typing, they call it "keyboarding", or sometimes something like Computer Skills.

Our middle school offers the equivalent of Home Ec. They call it Life Skills, or something like that.

to earn a little spending (very little, lol) i used to iron a friend's dress shirts...learned how in class once...

I think I learned a lot in all of my classes even when it wasn't the lesson I wanted to learn. LOL!

My most useful class was probably Death and Dying.

10 Key Adding machine course after HS. I used that skill all my working days and was the fastest one in the office and I'd say made very few mistakes.

My 9th grade history teacher spent one semester teaching us how to file an income tax. He gave us each a "life scenario" and from that we had to fill out the IRS long form and any applicable worksheets. That is the only thing he taught me of any value, but I have used it every year since graduation.

I am observing that the majority of above posters have taken a business course.

As most of you know, I am a newly-retired HS business teacher. Mostly all the business subjects I have taken in HS/college helped me earn $$$.

If I didn't pursue teaching, I could have gone into many other fields such as finance, retailing, and law.

HS students can never go wrong majoring in business or taking a business course as an elective (if they can fit it into their schedule).

Also, many courses are offered nights in continuing ed. for a nominal fee (given at your library or HS).

Personal Finance -- amazing how many people don't understand writing checks - paying bills - taxes & forms etc. Just the basic stuff that gets you out into the world with rent, deposits, payments, credit & how it works for your or against you...
