Securing open staircase - install risers?
Comments (4)We are going through the same situation in our home. Just last week, my 2 year old son (who has never shown an interest in the gap between the steps) somehow fell through two stairs on our upper-level staircase and landed on the parallel staircase directly below and tumbled the rest of the way to the bottom. I finally reached him at the bottom of the basement staircase. We were air-lifted to the nearest pediatric ER, and thankfully survived with only a concussion (what a miracle). I mention this not to alarm you, but just to say that I was in your situation about 2 years ago (debating on how/if to baby-proof the open staircase). My husband and I had never come up with a satisfactory solution and were falsely content after our son seemed to "master" the steps with no apparent issues. We were so wrong and I would never have forgiven myself if anything worse had happened. I don't know how we will do it, but safety (not attractiveness) is the number one priority. We are taking care of it this weekend. Please learn from my family's mistake and fix it NOW, not later! Good luck!...See MoreRefinish Open Riser Stairs
Comments (0)Project: Refinishing basement open-riser stairs. Previously, stairs were carpeted - fully wrapped steps and stringers. Looking to refinish the stairs with painted stringers. Considering adding 1/4" picture framing to steps to inlay carpet. Details: Stringers are routed with steps inset. Inside stringer has gap between finished wall but is not shimmed to be secured to wall studs. At bottom, stringers haven't been notched to install a kicker, so stairs aren't secured to concrete floor. Questions: 1) Should the inside stringer be shimmed and secured to wall studs before finishing skirt board and trim? Drywall is already 2) Should stringers be notched to add a kicker to secure to concrete floor?...See MoreEntry remodel ideas needed - front door opens right to stairs
Comments (7)Well, sure, there is room to change the staircase. But, that would require adding more tile. You will have to find tile that matches exactly the existing floor tile, and that may be a problem. Tile goes out of style quickly, and you may not find the tile that matches anymore. In which case, you would have to re tile the entire floor. and, you will also need to re carpet the staircase. So, pretty expensive option, although easily done....See MoreStair riser & drywall -- finishing dilemma
Comments (3)Thank you so much for your feedback G & S Floor Service and Joseph Corlett, LLC -- the need to have the _same_ material mitered into the rise is clear. Q: Is your assessment that the following projects have a wooden side board (skirt board?) mitered with the wooden riser to from the seamless 90 deg edge? Q: If yes, then would this wooden side board cover the full face of the sidewall, as highlighted in the green box below Based on your feedback so far, I am currently leaning towards actually installing a skirt board along the following lines...See Morepalimpsest
