What to do with stair risers?
Comments (30)Lincrusta; A strong tuff wallpaper type product pressed in raised relief style, to paint or stain or embellish. Very useful covering flaws in old wall textures or damage. The look of artistic hand made plaster relief but machine made for much less cost in money and time. Great fun to work with and personalize. Example 2 is a dream for walls that are not plumb and straight lines become impossible. Hand painting in more colors to match decor is great fun, and frame as art, or door panels, or trim, etc. I LOVE playing with this type wallcovering! 1 border2 wall 3 crown4 wainscoating...See MoreSecuring open staircase - install risers?
Comments (4)We are going through the same situation in our home. Just last week, my 2 year old son (who has never shown an interest in the gap between the steps) somehow fell through two stairs on our upper-level staircase and landed on the parallel staircase directly below and tumbled the rest of the way to the bottom. I finally reached him at the bottom of the basement staircase. We were air-lifted to the nearest pediatric ER, and thankfully survived with only a concussion (what a miracle). I mention this not to alarm you, but just to say that I was in your situation about 2 years ago (debating on how/if to baby-proof the open staircase). My husband and I had never come up with a satisfactory solution and were falsely content after our son seemed to "master" the steps with no apparent issues. We were so wrong and I would never have forgiven myself if anything worse had happened. I don't know how we will do it, but safety (not attractiveness) is the number one priority. We are taking care of it this weekend. Please learn from my family's mistake and fix it NOW, not later! Good luck!...See MoreWhat did you pay for open riser stairs and cable or other railings?
Comments (9)It's a pretty good guess - could be more depending on the steel fabrication costs. My builder just put in some stainless cables and paid $8K just for the hardware. Working with steel his more expensive and required to get the open feel you are looking for. Labor is high due to the demand in commercial building for welders, etc. Expect it to continue to rise....See Moreopen risers and railing ideas?
Comments (11)Try to peel some of the carpet off one tread in the basement and see what the wood looks like? If it's paint/stain-able, you could go that route (after you remove 1,000 staples) but if you want to remove the carpet and put in risers and update the railing, it's time to talk to a stair pro. I don't think risers are right for your home, the underside of stairs are not always pretty and yours would be exposed and you'll lose valuable light too. It's a giant job. Good luck!...See MoreRelated Professionals
