Quick window decision-- help!

The monster build is going in behind me. I have to make a decision on window treatments, let the moths out of my wallet, and not procrastinate this time.

I priced shutters to keep the light and block the view (alas!) I am nervous about choosing a company for such a pricey project and hate to spend $600 ish per window. Ouch.

I like the look of curtains and bamboo shades, although they will not help as much in terms of keeping the light while blocking the view. Since I can sew they'd be much cheaper-- probably $200/window. Not a fan of blinds, unfortunately. And I hate to block my nice windows and lovely light.

What would you do? Any shutter companies you'd recommend in the Harrisburg area?

What pretty windows. I love their proportions and trim. I am glad you are not going with shutters as to me they read more "wall" than "windows."

Would you consider a double curtain rod with sheers and drapes? I would hang only one on each window so that the treatments stack at the opposite side from the fireplace. You could pull the sheer to reduce light but still keep the view somewhat, and the drape to block light more totally.

You could also do the bamboo blinds + drapes if you don't mind permanently blocking part of the top of the window with the blinds. However, the top portion of the window is where the most light enters the room, so I would not do the blinds if you need full sunlight for any part of the day. I believe I read here that it's the top 20% of the window that lets the most light in, but I may not be recalling correctly.

Inside mounted sheers would be perfect to let in plenty of light while screening the view. Natural grass shades would block a lot of the light and all of the view but when your LR was lit up at night, They would be able to see everything: they just give the illusion of privacy.

dekr8, What area of the country do you live in? Is hot weather & sun exposure an issue? If so, consider a lighter tone roof. If not, then I would suggest darker if you plan to keep the house color. I snapped some quick pics of my roof and each of my neighbors. These were taken just outside my windows, so I apologize in advance they're not crystal clear, but it shows three kinds of asphault shingles. I've got standard in a dark brown-ish. They were here when we bought the house and are about 5 years old. I wouldn't be surprised if they're the cheapest level. We're the 4th owners in 20 years. Lots of move-outs and cheap fixes. One pic is my neighbor's roof where he did a light gray shingle. His was just done this past summer. He chose to do lighter to try to keep his energy bills down, the lighter color refects as opposed to absorbs the heat like a dark or black would do. We're in North Texas. The other neighbor's roof is a fancier shingle with more dimension. It adds texture for sure. I hope this helps. rjinga - where in San Diego did you live? The trim is BM Snowfall White 2144-70 and not changing. Why not use the same white for the walls then? If you're looking for white walls, I mean. (Or is it too cool with the wood?) Use a different sheen to offer the eye a bit of contrast or difference. Otherwise, check out what BM suggests it goes with: Silver Mist, Excalibur Gray or Ice Formations are the three lighter of the four colours they suggest. Maybe you can play around with those suggestions. (My local BM stores have decorators onsite to help clients with their colour palettes. Perhaps an idea for you?) Alternatively, you can paint match your tile surfaces (with an app like BM's ColorPortfolio) to give you a palette starting point. I'd try a few shades lighter than the green in your counter, for example. If the SW Sea Salt doesn't feel right in the space for you, try to figure out why. Is the blue in that colour coming out too strongly for you? Is it too light? Does it make your complexion look sickly? Etc. There can be a variety of reasons why a colour just doesn't suit a space for us but without knowing the reason, it can be difficult to figure out how to improve it. FWIW, I would not paint the vanity or mirror trim. Both are gorgeous and complement the counter really well, imo.

Do you have any images of your space (four walls) and an image of how dark you would like your fireplace ideally to be. Perhaps you do not need to go darker or perhaps you do, but visuals speak volumes. Shades and lighting vary along with the colours and decor of a space. Hard to tell without visuals.

You can purchase lined bamboo shades if you need to control the light. If you want it really dark, have them lined with a blackout lining.

Thinking sheers at this point-- simple, I don't have to deliberate over a pattern, inexpensive. Voile-a (can't believe I said that...)
