Martha Stewart's split lip

I returned home from my trips to Cartagena, Colombia, South America, and Orlando, Florida on Tuesday night, right before the predicted snowstorm. I unpacked, sorted my stuff, and played with the dogs. I planned to get into New York City that night, so I would not be delayed in the morning by the snowfall Ã¯Â¿Â½ twenty inches were forecast! I had a 7:00AM call at the Today Show and a 9:00AM call for the Martha Show. As I leaned down to whisper goodbye to a dozing Francesca, I must have startled her, because she bolted upright with such force that she hit me in the face like a boxing glove hitting an opponentÃ¯Â¿Â½s face. I was entirely startled and my neck snapped back. I felt a bit of whiplash as blood gushed forth from my split lip. Frannie was as upset as I was and cowered in her bed.

Rushing to a mirror, I realized it was a pretty serious gash. I called Alexis and asked her to call the hospital to get a plastic surgeon to the emergency room. I called the police to ask for a ride to the hospital, forgetting that Carlos, my driver was waiting to drive me into the city. Carlos and Betsy Perreten, my stable manager, packed me into the car and we drove in the falling snow the few miles to the emergency room in Northern Westchester Hospital, my wonderful neighborhood medical center. When we arrived, I was instructed to lie down and wait until the plastic surgeon on call, Dr. William Nolan, could get there from his nearby home. The pictures tell the rest of the story. I don't think this is what she was looking for, but it was really good nonetheless. Serves 4. Published September 1, 2008. From Cook's Illustrated. Ingredients 3tablespoons soy sauce 2tablespoons oyster sauce 2tablespoons hoisin sauce (see note) 1tablespoon toasted sesame oil 1/4teaspoon five-spice powder 1pound boneless country-style pork ribs , trimmed of surface fat and excess gristle and sliced crosswise into 1/8-inch pieces 1/4teaspoon liquid smoke (optional) 1/2cup low-sodium chicken broth 1teaspoon cornstarch 2medium garlic cloves , minced or pressed through a garlic press (about 2 teaspoons) 2teaspoons grated fresh ginger 4 1/2teaspoons vegetable oil 4tablespoons Chinese rice cooking wine (Shao-Xing) or dry sherry 1/2pound shiitake mushrooms , stems trimmed, caps cut in halves or thirds (about 3 cups) 2bunches scallions , whites thinly sliced and greens cut into 1-inch pieces (about 2 cups) 1small head Napa or Chinese cabbage , halved, cored, and sliced crosswise into 1/2-inch strips (about 4 cups) 12ounces Chinese egg noodles (fresh) or 8 ounces dried linguine 1tablespon Asian chile garlic sauce Instructions 1. Bring 4 quarts water to boil in Dutch oven over high heat. 2. Whisk soy sauce, oyster sauce, hoisin sauce, sesame oil, and five-spice powder together in medium bowl. Place 3 tablespoons soy sauce mixture in large zipper-lock bag; add pork and liquid smoke, if using. Press out as much air as possible and seal bag, making sure that all pieces are coated with marinade. Refrigerate at least 15 minutes or up to 1 hour. Whisk broth and cornstarch into remaining soy sauce mixture in medium bowl. In separate small bowl, mix garlic and ginger with 1/2 teaspoon vegetable oil; set aside. 3. Heat 1 teaspoon vegetable oil in 12-inch cast-iron or nonstick skillet over high heat until just smoking. Add half of pork in single layer, breaking up clumps with wooden spoon. Cook, without stirring, 1 minute. Continue to cook, stirring occasionally, until browned, 2 to 3 minutes. Add 2 tablespoons wine to skillet; cook, stirring constantly, until liquid is reduced and pork is well coated, 30 to 60 seconds. Transfer pork to medium bowl and repeat with remaining pork, 1 teaspoon oil, and remaining 2 tablespoons wine. Wipe skillet clean with paper towels. 4. Return skillet to high heat, add 1 teaspoon vegetable oil, and heat until just smoking. Add mushrooms and cook, stirring occasionally, until light golden brown, 4 to 6 minutes. Add scallions and continue to cook, stirring occasionally, until scallions are wilted, 2 to 3 minutes longer; transfer vegetables to bowl with pork. 5. Add remaining teaspoon vegetable oil and cabbage to now-empty skillet; cook, stirring occasionally, until spotty brown, 3 to 5 minutes. Clear center of skillet; add garlic-ginger mixture and cook, mashing mixture with spoon, until fragrant, about 30 seconds. Stir garlic mixture into cabbage; return pork-vegetable mixture and chicken broth-soy mixture to skillet; simmer until thickened and ingredients are well incorporated, 1 to 2 minutes. Stir in capers, lemon juice and a pinch of salt. Remove from heat and cover loosely to keep warm. Pat pork rounds dry and season with salt and pepper. Yes, you need a pair of Twin XL fitted sheets for the bottom. And a regular king flat sheet for the top. It's not easy to find anything except a set of king sheets so you may have to buy the fitted sheets separately. I bought mine from Red Land Cotton, and they were kind enough to sell me the Twin XL sheets separately, plus a flat sheet and pillow cases separately as well. I called them and they fixed me up. I was a repeat customer, having bought a queen set previously as well as a baby gift. They are not cheap but the sheets are wonderful and well made.

Amazing force in a dogs head. Something similar happened with my dog and I ended up with a root canal over it. She's still a sweetie though (my dog). Martha is lucky to have good connections!

I saw the photos - she's going to be sore and swollen for a while. She's lucky it split on the surface and didn't go all the way through. Dogs have amazingly hard noggins! I bent down to pet one of my rotties just as he decided to get up and he hit the bridge of my nose with his head - it hurts so much I was afraid it was broken. It wasn't, but it really was painful.

I too was confused, but them I've only had a couple sips of coffee and am still a little foggy (which should clear up about noon.LOL) Isn't it something how these little accidents happen in a blink of an eye?

When I was about ten, my new puppy ran full-tilt into me and split my lip. My parents thought she bit me. I finally convinced them it was a goofy accident.

Oh...that smarts for sure!

I have had that happen, except I just let loose a few f-bombs and put an ice pack on it, LOL. Looked like i went a few rounds with somebody though.

Wish we had the option to easily put quotes in boxes here. Would make things a lot easier to understand sometimes.

It was a little confusing at first, but then I figured out it was Martha "speaking", and I'm sorry but the only thing I could think of was that even with all this going on, how entitled she is! Who calls the police to take them to the hospital because of a cut lip, especially when they have their own driver waiting! And tells the hospital to have a plastic surgeon waiting? Puh-leeeze, only Martha Stewart, lolz

I just looked at the pictures-the reason her lip looks so swollen and puffy is because a local anesthetic was injected so it wouldn't hurt to stitch it up. And any ER doc worth his salt could have sewn that up, a plastic surgeon was a bit of melodramatic overkill.

I saw the pictures on her blog last night.

I don't think a plastic surgeon is overkill, I would insist on one for anything on my face and I am not on TV or in magazines. I've seen what some emergency room doctors can do...my sister, DH and X-DH all have nasty scars on their faces to prove it.

Dogs head are very strong. I got clobbered by Georgy and knew I was going to have a black eye. Sure enough. No amount of make-up could cover it up. I don't think a plastic surgeon is overkill either. Particularly since she's on T.V.

You are probably right, the plastic surgeon would be who I would want for a facial lac on myself, but I see ER docs who do them a lot, especially in the summer. They seem to do a good job. But my little medical center doesn't have a plastic surgeon within 50 miles, so we go with what we got.

But I still think she was acting like a diva!

Yes, a few pretty beads would have been nice. Maybe next time. LOL

She IS a diva and has a driver who takes her everywhere. But if I were her, I'd be a diva too. I think my dogs are trying to kill me. They're very short and trip me all the time. I told them to remember who feeds and walks them..lol

If I made my living on a television show I would absolutely have a plastic surgeon do the stitches as well. And many, if not most, wealthy folks have a driver, especially when in a major city or driving into one. Part of my job is having a driver waiting for my boss when he is running to/from meetings and or the airport.

These folks live in a totally different world than I do, not a better or worse world, not right or wrong, just different.

Couldn't have happened to a sleazier hag. I hope it's painful and the scars show like neon. So many felons feel they deserve special treatment so why would a 4x Felon be different? I'll be glad to chip in on a couple of Michael Vick's pitbulls for her...

Lol, wow. I have to agree though, what a freakin' diva. I can honestly say, after reading her story and Jannie's story, it doesn't compare in the least. I really think this was overkill drama for a SPLIT LIP. My heart goes out to Jannie and others who are dealing with almost impossible situations.

You cannot compare what jannie, susan_on, dotmom or all the other people on this forum who are battling cancer, brain tumors and other heart wrenching things with Martha Stewart's split lip. In Martha's world it was a big deal, there was a major snowstorm in New York City and she had to get to the hospital. I don't think she was being a diva at all. She's probably laughing at the whole ordeal now. I don't think she was looking for sympathy just telling the story of how her beloved fur baby whacked her in the mouth.

I like Martha, always have and probably always will. There are many others who have done a lot worse and not been punished at all. I'm one who happens to believe that if she were male she would not have ever served a day behind bars.

sleeper...my ds2 split a lip falling out of tree and the er doc refused to stich him and sent us to a plastic surgeon...he said it was entirely too visible and didn't want im to carry a bad scar, forever...he was 9 at the time...

It's common practice in our area to have a plastic surgeon close a cut that's located in a prominent location on the face. It's not completely clear from the photo but if the cut extends into the lip itself or into the tissue behind the lip the concern is that it won't heal completely smooth and who wants an irregular lip?

While Martha's cut appears to be relatively minor this is a woman who is on TV. It happened during the day and there could easily have been a plastic man in the hospital.

My husband is a physician but not a surgeon and he has sutured our kids several times at home. He keeps a few bottles of a local anesthetic and suture packs at home. Most of the time the cuts only require 4 or 5 stitches and it's much quicker to do it at home rather than drive to the ER but he wouldn't sew up a facial laceration.

Well, she did call the police for a ride, but was most likely in panic mode. Police did not give her a ride, though (maybe they would've, I dunno): Her driver was ready to take her to the hospital.

But if I were a TV personality, I would also be in panic mode about a cut so noticeably front-and-center.

She wasn't in New York City at the time. She was at her home in Northern Westchester County -- a little less than an hour north of NYC, and I am familiar with the roads in that area, having lived in the Bedford/Mount Kisco area. They are winding and narrow (until you get to the main street in Mount Kisco, near the hospital), and if that snowstorm was getting heavy, I might've also called the police to ensure I could get to the hospital. (Not as bad as calling an ambulance, IMHO, and that's not a crime-filled area that it would've been a horrible thing to pull an officer off his/her patrol to take her there.)

It also happened at night -- not during the day as someone else posted -- which makes driving on some of those roads a bit more treacherous. I'm sure that her house is off a winding one-lane road, for privacy's sake, much like other celebrities' homes there. I remember a shortcut I used to take that ran past a house (mansion, more like it) owned by Mariah Carey at the time; it's not one I took unless the weather and road was clear.

Facial cuts? Yeah, I would want a plastic surgeon, too. They're not there just to do nose jobs and eyelifts.

(The 40-something photos taken by Martha's stables manager, tho? That one of the wallpaper border cracked me up! I'll bet that person will soon be on Martha's PR team--altho I wonder if Martha herself hollered at her to grab the camera on the way out and "Photograph everything you see! I'll use it for my blog!")

Bottom line? If there was a time to act like a diva, in her public-life circumstances, that was it.

Let's look at it in another perspective. If you were an artist, a multi-million dollar artist, and you had a bad cut to a finger. Would you want an ER doctor sewing it up, and someone who is specialized. She's a multi-million dollar artist who is on TV all the time, and I certainly don't blame her for wanting a skilled surgeon to sew her up. I'd want the same thing for myself, my DD, my DGD, or any other member of our family.

As far as the felony, she paid her dues. Let it go. She has worked hard, still works hard, and like her or not, she's a success. If I were her, I'd have a driver too. So much work can be done during a commute!

She is what she is, and we all are what WE are.

I had almost the exact same cut when I tried picking up a cat in the middle of a cat fight and he crawled right up over my head. His back claw sliced my lip almost to my nose.

Yeah, the ER doc stitched me up and to this day I have a bad scar because he didn't account for the swelling and the stitches were too tight and the suture line puckered.

If I had known then what I know now, I would have INSISTED on a plastic surgeon. Just because you can do a thing, doesn't mean it's appropriate for you to do it.

Actually, she needed a plastic surgeon. It looks like the cut crossed the line of the lip. If they do the regular sew up job, it messes up the line of the lip or at least that is what I understand from when I took my dd to the emergency room for a similar cut. The doctor in dd's case decided it was better to let the cut heal naturally because a stitch would make the situation worse.

I don't think Martha was being a diva. Every little thing she does makes news. If she didn't tell her story, the papparazzi would have had to make up their own story. It would have probably went something like "Police called in to break up fight between Martha and staff. Martha later escorted to hospital by police." LOL!

I'm sorry I have to say this - I'm splitting a gut just thinking about it (hey, where's my paparazzi camera???), hey where's the news headline for my split gut?????

I appreciate MS getting special care because her face is part of her income/brand. I get that.

But photos of her immediately at that time? Can you say $$$$$$$$$ photo op?

Still I can't believe I'm now the 39th post.

Oh and Cynic - thank you for your post - so honest and true you brought tears to my eyes. And now I have a split gut laughing about all this!!!!!

Tally you may very well be right...honestly this event is not something she planned. It just kills me though that it is 'newsworthy' at all.

And I do wish her a speedy recovery.

You are crazy to think that Martha Stewart would allow some lowly hospital staffer to snap that many pictures of her without her consent. She released those photos herself and no one will be fired. I stand by my original post-DIVA

On her blog, she mentions the name of her stable manager (who helped get her to the hospital), and she thanks a person by the same name for taking the photos. It was not some hospital staffer who took the photos--if you looked at all the photos (and I understand why most people would stop at photo #1!), you would have seen that wallpaper border photo that I mentioned--who do you think would've taken that but one of Martha's peeps?! (Or maybe Martha after she had to look at it while being stitched up!)

(And yes--those photos were all over the web within minutes of her posting. In the very general sense, it IS a photo op. The entertainment world survives on them--if your name and photo isn't buzzing around social media nowadays, your $$ worth sinks.)
