Oil Smell with Dual Fuel Furnace

Greetings,

We have a Newmac dual fuel furnace (it burns both oil and wood).

When we burn wood everything seems fine. When we burn oil (usually only in the early fall and late spring) we notice a slight oil smell for the first few moments of each oil burn cycle. This quickly goes away as soon as the fan kicks on.

Yesterday I decided to try to 'pre-heat' the chimney before I went in to start a wood fire, so I turned on the oil for a few minutes. The smell of oil was extremely strong!

Today, doing an experiment I manually turned on the blower, left it run for a minute, and then turned on the oil and there was no smell at all.

Yesterday and today were both much colder than a fall day (17* F). Could a poor draft cause this to happen? We have a three story chimney which runs on the outside of the house.

I don't *think* it's a heat exchanger crack, as then I'd think I'd smell wood smoke in the house too when the fire is burning.

Any thoughts?
