Questions about Existing Cellulose in Attic

Hi,

I live in Phoenix and have a twenty-year old single level home with existing cellulose insulation in the attic space.

I was wondering how do you inspect for air leaks with all this insulation in place?

I have a big dust problem in this house and I'm beginning to wonder if it is from the insulation fibers.

The reason I believe this is that the "dust" looks identical in color and texture to the settled cellulose fibers (although I haven't looked through a microscope). The dust doesn't look like your typical sand or dirt.

Also, I haven't run the AC or fan for a month and "dust" accumulates within a day. I'm beginning to wonder how well the attic and the ducts for the air conditioning were sealed because a few years ago, after the cellulose, the original owners decided to place recessed lighting everywhere and redo the air conditioning system. I have a bad feeling they let a few things go, based off of the quality of the remodeling.

Is it possible for the fibers to be going through the flexible ducts as well?

Please educate me, as I'm a new homeowner.

Liz
