Rehabilitating Michael Vick's Pit Bulls

I know some of you are fond of Pit Bulls, and many of you are dog lovers. So I thought you might like to read this article about what's being done to rehabilitate Michael Vick's fighting Pit Bulls and get them good homes.

I've watched Ceasar on pit bulls.
His Big Daddy is such a love, as he presents him, but I still have my doubts.

Big Daddy died several months ago. Years ago it was the dobermans everyone were afraid of. Remember all the movies with vicious dobermans? Pit Bulls can be killers, but you can't judge every dog by its breed. Junior has taken over Daddy's spot as Cesar's right hand dog.

Okay I have to chime in here,I HATE the bad rap the pit bulls get,there are a lot of towns that have banned them around here,it is not the dogs fault it is the way they are raised,I know some people use these dogs as fighters but again that is people not the dogs.My son got me a dog from a shelter 6 years ago,a pit bull,bless her heart she has saved my life twice,really saved my life had it not been for her I would have died 5 years ago,I was in a boating accident,the prop got my leg,all but cut it off,I was knocked out Tootie my hero who had also been thrown from the boat,found me when I surfaced,I came to enough to know she was there she swam back to the capsized boat with me hanging on to her colar,I held on to the boat till help got there,when the rescue squad first got there they could not even get a bp reading and pulse rate was 22,I had almost bled out,after a 4 month stay in the hospital,I went home for a week,I developed a bad infection in the leg,went back to the hospital,they had to debre my leg,meaning they had to cut away the flesh where it had turned black,and started the healing process all over,6 more months on a wound vac,still praying I wasn't gonna lose my leg,and now 5 years later,I still have my leg and my hero,Tootie.My son says that is the best 50.00 dollars he has ever spent,and she loves the grand babies,if they take a nap Tootie lays beside them until they wake up,and while they are sleeping,no one and, I mean no one bothers those babies.I am sorry I started to ramble but it really bothers me that people judge a dog by the breed,and that is so unfair,Okay I will hush about all this,love you guys,Happy New Year. I'm afraid I don't see how someone can do things such as that and not realize what they're doing or seeing. I do believe it's probably just part of a culture that he was raised in, but something's gotta be missing inside with people who can do those sorts of things and not have it register somewhere. I also don't think someone can just change that type of thinking so Quickly. Maybe there are intense programs in prison? It just doesn't seem too plausible to me. It would take a lot of time and reprogramming to reach that point, imo. Hopefully he's at least on his way. I did not see the interview to really see how much progress he claims to have made. I also don't understand the connection to NFL, with regards to people's outrage. I can sort of see what people are saying, but I still see them as separate. I don't believe in shunning or bullying people. He's out of prison now, as far as punishment goes, and he needs to move on. Hopefully forward. If someone wants to hire him, then that's their business. I don't see it as some sort of a reward for bad behavior. Apparently he does what he does well, so that's why he's back. I'm not sure why his salary was reduced as it was -- from ~$134 million down to ~$1.6 million (the numbers may not be completely accurate). Specifically why? To offset potential losses due to public outrage? Cause they could manage to keep a whole lot of money? It's really not their job to punish him further, so I don't quite get that. But, what I think would have been really great, since they did reduce his salary, is if they had put all that money to good use working on animal protection and rights. $132 million. It would have been demonstrable if he'd actually offered to do it, but still quite something if the NFL had, as their own statement and support.

Debbimc, I wholeheartedly agree. Pitbulls are not bad dogs. Rottweillers are not bad dogs. It's despicable people who turn them into killing machines. I know it's not nice to wish ill will on others, but boy am I glad he's in bankruptcy court now. Whoever does buy this house will be getting a bargain even with having to rip out the 7 carpet. Someone posted a link over in kitchens to a bunch of homes in CT priced between $3 and $9 million. While most are very nice there is one that's marked sold at a list price of $3.6 million with an absolutely hideous kitchen. This show did pacify animal lovers. I'm so happy that the animals have been given another chance. I hate that they were left isolated for several weeks in a dark container whie a decision was being made on how to handle this situation. Unless I misunderstood, that one little female dog, Rose or Miss Rose, was in so much pain and beyond help that she had to be put down. Was she left that way for those weeks while the decision was being made or was that done when they were first confiscated? People who sponser those fights all over the country most likely don't watch Animal Planet, nor would they be interested in seeing it on another channel. I don't think this show will have any impact on them. I just hope and pray that neighbors or people who know where these fights are taking place will report them. They are low life scumbags who obviously have no regard for living beings. I wish they would be thrown into a pen with those dogs they trained to fight and suffer the consequences of their deeds.

I admit I know nothing about football. But I was surprised at all the accolades Vick received upon his return to the sport. Either he saw the light and truly turned his life around, or football fans are a remarkably forgiving bunch.

When I was a kid it was German Shepard's that everyone was afraid of.

It's how these dogs have been raised by the owners that makes them or breaks them

What about rehabiltating those who watch the dogs fighting?if there was no market for the figths they would close down.In other words it takes two to tango.

Italy and some other European countries consider Corgis and Collies dangerous! Italy has put lots of new requirements on owners of those dogs (plus over 90 other breeds).. you can't even own one if you have children in the house and you must muzzle them in public. I wonder what happened to the dogs in all the households that have children? Were they all euthanized? Our Kobi was part Corgi and he was a sweetie.

Did you hear Vick was wanting to get a dog for a pet now?

Corgis?? That's what Queen Elizabeth has, no? I guess that means no state visits to Italy. :-)

A friend of mine has one of the large breeds that Italy has banned. I forget the name....it's one I'd never heard of. The dog is huge, but totally sweet.

I think every breed has its problems. And yes most dogs do have off days and yes when you get several dogs together it can cause problems, regardless of breeds.

I personally would not own a pit bull or any dog that has been taught to fight, IMHO, the dog that has been taught to fight is going to have a problem. I mean like DUH.. look at rescue dogs, they have issues that include abandonment, starvation, abuse, shyness and people issues.

I have never had dangerous dogs, and I have had several german shepards in my life. Course everyone says that right? All I have had in my life are barking pigs, or at least that is what my husband has called my furry friends.

A pit bull attacked my lil' Sweetie (Yorkie). We got her to the vet and she was in shock..he operated as soon as he could and she did live..BUT that changed my feeling about pit bulls. A couple that lived next door to me had three children and a pit bull, he seems to be wonderful with the family until the dad backed the dog into a corner one day and ended up in the hospital from the attack. The dog was PTS.

Personally I think Michael Vick is a sociopath, and I live in Eagles country but am not a football fan. If a person can do what he did to living breathing animals, he deserves a way long time behind bars. . I'm sorry but I don't trust pit bulls either. I was surprised to read about Corgi's (Queens dogs) and collies being banned in Italy. That said I have a temperamental Dachshund who needs supervision. He adores cats, loves the dog he lives with, loves kids and people, but has issues with big dogs. It's in the breed but he came from iffy circumstances. Turned into a kill shelter because they had too many dogs. So he has issues, but I watch him carefully. It's the Napoleon complex plus his history. I try to socialize him all the time.

My aunt and uncle had a chow. I was so scared of that dog. Remember they kept him on a leash whenever they had company. I was youg then, but I still don't care for chows.

My mom just finished reading the book at rehabilitating the dogs Vick's fought. I won't be able to read it. It is so heartbreaking. Whether you like pits or not, no dog deserves the treatment that these dogs received. I hope that they can be rehabilitated and homes found for the ones that survived.
