My Italian husband, who is an excellent cook, really likes to use shell fish in some of his 'special' dishes.
Last night he was having several of his friends over for a special dish....he had found some cockle clams at a local store and bought 2 pounds......He made the sauce and added the clams....when the clams had cooked the usual time, he added them to the pasta. As he did so, he noticed that they did not seem to open. He served the dish and his friends enjoyed it...evidently it was not harmful, because they (my husband and friends) are all alive and kicking.......but it is a mystery as to why NONE of the clams opened. None of had ever seen cockles before and are wondering whether possibly they need some special way of preparation.
They tried last night to open them with a knife at a joint and had no success. I put them in a jar with salted water and would like to keep them as shells for the garden.....they are really pretty.
Do any of you have an idea as to why they didn't open? Or how I can save the shells to use in the garden?
Lina.
