I did a built-in bookshelf where I put an electrical outlet on the back and it looks pretty cool. I used a sleek modern black and silver outlet/faceplate so it looked like part of the design. Photobucket is acting up right now, but when it's working again I'll post a photo. As for the switch, I'd say you have a couple choices. Either have it exposed in the bookshelf, or move it to another wall. If you move it, you may have to leave an exposed plate covering the junction box depending on electrical codes (I don't believe you can cover up a jbox, but I don't know if that's just my area).

Do you mean the the shelf or ledge of your pretty range hood or fan cover? Hmmmmm -- a large white vintage ironstone platter would look wonderful! Are your vent covers on ceilings, at top of walls, in the floor? People depending on their HVAC system and geo location have them in various spots in my area they are in ceilings and we usually use metal ones painted same color as the ceiling paint... And the way I know about the switch plate covers and electrical plugs is from my own mistake... I had granite installed in kitchen in house we own but don't live in--prepping for sale--and used the faux stone covers in kitchen backsplash... the plugs just don't work with that look really...but I left them... also had problem in vacation house in FL where we were having some rewiring done and adding new electrical runs.. the electricians told me that to do what I originally asked for would mean having two different plugs/switch covers in same room... so I chose to go with the older color so I didn't have to switch out (pun intended) twice as many plugs/covers... If you are in older house the plugs/covers are probably that ugly tan shade and the new tone going in--at least in my area--is the lighter, just not quite white tone... I chose paint color for our new house that pretty much matches that color w/o realizing it until it was on the walls...now my wall plugs really blend into the walls...

For many of these items Home Depot offers multi-packs at substantial discount. For example, one white Decora Midway wall plate costs $0.96 while 10 cost $8.16. Lutron Maestro LED+ Dimmer Switches are excellent as are the Lutron Diva LED+ Dimmer Switches which include physical (not just electronic) on/off switches but are not programmable. I used occupancy sensors (with, without dimmer) in hallways so the lights would turn on when I entered at night.
