Best bet is to go to the Miele web site and download the manuals for the machines. The manual for the dryer should have the installation requirements. They were in mine but I have the gas version. Also while in that manual check the pipe venting size requirements.

Thanks Jerrod. Our dryer is the gas version as well. I have already checked the manuals, but they each simply state:

...connection to a 120V, 60Hz, 15A AC power supply

I searched a little more and found a post here where someone measured the consumption of their 4840 at a max. of 1170 watts. I would expect the gas dryer to use much, much less than that, so I think one 20A circuit should be fine for both. I'll try calling Miele to confirm.

When an electrican did our remodel he said seperate circuits were needed for each. I believe it was a code issue. We don't have the Miele dryer, but a GE gas dryer with very similar electrical requirements.

On a technical note...

I've measured and data logged the electrical use of the Miele W4840. The measuring equipment was set to log a data point every 15 seconds. When motors start, they can draw a bunch more current than while operating at a steady state. If that startup draw doesn't happen at the moment you're logging you aren't capturing the maximum draw. My purpose was to determine when it was using it's internal water heater, so a data point every 15 seconds was good enough measurement. I wouldn't extrapolate and make power budget decisions based on it.

Thanks gordonr, very good points. I just called Miele, and they say each needs its own 15A circuit. Since I believe code requires a 20A dedicated laundry circuit, I guess I'll be running a 15 and a 20.

If your electrical install involves snaking up walls, etc (i.e. not a simple basement install) consider running the right kind of wire as if your installing a 220V - 15A circuit. The cost difference is relatively small in the grand scheme of things. Maybe someday the US manufacturers will see the light and start supplying 220V equipment. If they do, and you want to go there, you'll only have to switch out outlets and breakers. It may never happen, but it's always good to have hope.

That's a great suggestion, but I'm not too worried about the next washer since this one is supposed to last 20 years ;-) Also, this is a simple basement install with only a 20 ft. run. It's on the finished side of our walk-out basement, but I didn't bother snaking through walls. I just ran conduit to surface mount boxes. I ended up running two 120V 20A circuits. One was required and I just liked the idea of them matching. I'm weird like that.

Washer and dryer will be here this afternoon and I pulled an all-nighter finishing the wiring and cleaning up after the week long project (had to do some drywall and plumbing as well). I'm looking forward to having a decent washer/dryer. Maybe it can get all the fiberglass from the mold resistant drywall out of my clothes ;-)
