I bought Bertolli once (years ago) and liked the flavour so much, I haven't ventured on to try anything else, for that reason.

Check the bottle and see if it says who made it, for Costco.

You'll find that the Costco EVOO and the Natural EVOO are both much better. Regular 'pure' OO is never very good for our typical American tastes..

Interesting report, sushipup. It makes me wonder- all of these recent findings that olive oil isn't as good for you as some other oils- could it be that the evoo they're testing just isn't good quality? Jasdip, I like Bertolli as well.

Bertolli is my..."it's fine" olive oil. I keep a half gallon bottle in the refrigerator and use it for making a cup of salad dressing or a quantity of pesto or in the bottom of a pan for starting a sauce.
For things where a nice fruity taste is important, like on a plate of sliced tomatoes, on top of a pizza, drizzled on some fresh bread, I use a better oil....
The olive tap has some, as well as world market...Penzeys etc.

Not sure where you learned about "refined oil"....but if the oil is rancid....return it for a refund. Even the cheapest oil should not be rancid. That's spoiled!!

If I'm eating olive oil "raw", as on tomatoes or in place of butter on bread, I like Schiabica's, it's a small family place in California and their Marsala oil is so good it doesn't need anything else.

I buy a cheaper oil to roast potatoes and do other cooking.

Yeah if it tastes rancid, return it. Costco takes everything back it seems except some electronics.

"Good" olive oil is so subjective though. I am near a small chain supermarket that brands their own olive oil and they always have a dozen or so of their varieties out for sampling, with slices of baguette. They are all SO different, and what's good to some folks might not be good to all. For instance, some people like "grassy" oil. To me it tastes like sucking my fingers after mowing the lawn, and that's not pleasant. To me. On the other hand not long ago I wasted a good amount of one of my favorite oils making a Caesar Salad dressing. The instructions specifically said OO, not EVOO, and they were right. "Regular" OO is a lot milder, and more appropriate in certain applications.

Rancid though, that's never appropriate. Return it!

I keep a few bottles of very nice EVOO in my fridge. Sciabica is one of them. I use such small amounts of any oil that I keep it all in my refrigerator.

Yes, it may have been rancid because I always found the regular olive oil has LESS taste than EVOO and is therefore good for baking. I really like it in baking actually, although right now I am on a grapeseed oil kick. Rancid oil not only tastes bad, but it is bad for you, since it has those free radicals that we are always trying to get rid of!

This is a good article on olive oil. It talks about grades and how it is processed. I have read that Extra-virgin olive oil cold pressed is the best. Be careful what you buy because some companies put in additives.
