LOVE my new tator peeler!

Got an OXO. Nice! Got the OXO can opener as well, but haven't opened a can yet.

Also bought a bread knife, and a brita filter. Hope the filter makes the water here taste better. It sort of has a "slimy" taste.

Moni, me too!! I got the OXO peeler and can opener from my son and daughter in law for Christmas! Love both!

Deana: You are right! If you are healthy.!!!!!! If your immune system is down, like from Cemo and Radiation treatments, you don't want any part of germs. SOOOOO!!!!!you do whatever, to eliminate as many as you can. Also you do what the doctor tell's you. My wife can't even go to Bingo, or Church when getting treatments. Can't be near anyone with colds. Naturally there are germs everywhere. Annie: you're right too! I do the same with tomatoes. Fenworth : You are right too. I wash the potatoes first. Take a slice off one side and stick the fork in and slice away.Then I wash the potatoes again when I'm done. I suggested the fork thing a while back, just for all the members who complained about Arthur in their hands. You are all right . Guess I'm just tired from all the running I've been doing lately. I apologize to everyone. Now, I will have to see where I started trouble in the other threads. LOU

Thanks everyone.......I went out looking today, and I bought a OXO peeler, and I used it tonight, and I really like it. I also ordered online a set of Messermeister peelers. Segregated, non segregated, and a Julianne peeler.They are suppose to be good.They look a lot like the OXO peeler. I'll give one to my Sister-in-law,after I decide which one I like the best.I had to peel potatoes at her house one day, and her peeler was pathetic ( DULL) !!! LOL Thanks for your ideas !!! Diana55 P.S....I have a hard time peeling with a Paring knife, because it takes me way to long, and I waste so much of the Potato !!!

Applesauce flavors are another issue too. Apparently my family has an inordinate love of applesauce, or so my husband says. I can it because the big store-bought jars usually spoil on me and my Dad before we can eat it all up. I can in the small half pint jars, just right for two servings for one person. The little store-bought kiddie cups just don't have the flavor, IMHO. I've experimented with a lot of apples for pies and sauce. McIntosh gives the classic "Mott's" applesauce flavor. I'm not a huge fan but many are. Some other types of apples are too watery and bland for my taste in applesauce. My favorites, Cortland and Empire, are not often available. Another favorite that I can sometimes get, is Jonagold. Just about the only reliable apple that I can get for applesauce that I like is golden delicious. That's a tad tart but can always be mixed with milder gala or Macs, which are the other kinds of apples I can get, along with red delicious. Other wonderful cooking apples I used to be able to get locally were Northern Spy and Ida Red, which makes great pink applesauce. The orchard outlet closed down last year, sigh. That's just my taste, which is I think way more tart and chunky than most. I don't buy organic because they are much more expensive than the basic apples I can buy on sale locally. I've posted before that we stick to the cheapest basics for most of our food shopping. If I'm going organic, it will be where I can get the most bang for my buck, like celery or greens. Finally yesterday when I was at the store I saw they got some local apples in, which were under 2 bucks a lb. my usual spending goal for produce. I got red delicious and gala, because that and Macs and Fuji were all they had. I am not a fan of Fuji apples. Particularly when they pick them green for commercial sale. They are easy to grow though, along with Gala. That's why they are so popular. Our store usually has all the common types at a reasonable price, but I guess around the holidays they ran low . . . I am going to the farm market an hour away tomorrow, should be able to get some nice produce then. I am going to get greens for decorating the house. Nothing reasonably priced locally. Sort of sad, considering how I live smack dab in the middle of some of the best farmland in the world. But it's just too tough for small producers of specialty crops anymore. It's not a resource viability issue, it's an economic return on time and money invested issue.

Did you get the opener that leaves a smooth edge on the can top? I have that one and REALLY like it. I also have the Oxo peeler .... it's been going strong for many years now. One of our family's "comfort" foods is Potato soup. You may have inspired me to make it tomorrow night.

OXO stuff is good. I on my second peeler. The ridges on the handle of the first one started to deteriorate, maybe from too many trips through the dishwasher.

Do you think that your peelers would peel a butternut squash?? DD makes soup with them alot and she peels it with a big ole knife and I know she will cut herself some day.

lunchlady I have never been able to use a peeler on a butternut squash. I slice mine in the round, then lay the slices on the cutting board and cut the peeling off in small sections.

Best way I could come up with.

Moni and lunchlady....I did a post on the OXO peeler two months ago. Yes, it's great on peeling a butternut squash. That's why I love it. I did a "favorite things" theme for Christmas and one of the gifts I included was the OXO peeler. Love, love, love it.

I gave family members each an OXO peeler years ago. It won awards as the best peeler. This company was started by a man who set about making kitchen gadgets that his mother could use comfortably with her arthritic hands. He gets my vote for son of the year!

I did not know that it was developed for arthritic hands! I have never seen the OXO, but I did buy a Cutco one about 15 yrs ago. Paid $32.00. For a peeler...??? BUT- I hadn't peeled a potato or carrot or anything for probably 15 yrs, because of RA affecting my hands. I loved it! I still have it, and don't use it often, but I love knowing that I can peel a potato if I want to! Now, if I could just find a manual can opener that I could manuver...I bought one of those cordless things, It is ok, but some cans it won't open. I guess if I wait long enough I will find an electric one on sale again...the B&D my SIL gave me in 1978 lasted about 18 yrs. No such luck with the ones today...2-3 yrs is about par...

Pammisue, my BIL tells me that B&D was sold and none of their products are any good these days. I think they are owned by a company in China these days.
