Yard Sale Finds

We stopped at a yard sale yesterday and the guy had baskets and boxes of old kitchen tools and gadgets and a wheelbarrow full of old cast iron pieces.

We broke our old cast iron skillet last year. (It was bowed and needed to be cleaned, so we thought we'd experiment and try throwing it in the coals when we burned brush. It cracked and did not get very clean.) The inside of this #8 feels like glass. A good scrubbing on the outside is all it needs.

I've been meaning to pick up a couple of spring action scoops at the restaurant supply. They run $13-$15 and I got these for $10 and they have better 'spring'.

And the whisk was just too cute to leave there.

DH found this waffle iron and is sure it will make better waffles than our newfangled iron. He's the waffle-maker, so he gets to clean it up.

SCORE!! What a haul.I would love to see how your DH cleans up...well, I'm sure he cleans up nicely...how the waffle iron cleans up.

What I like best about your post is that you and DH go to yard sales together...

Mine just gives me crap when I mention the concept.

Looks like a minnow bucket & coal carrier. I have some of those urn looking plastic planters. They last pretty well, I've had them 3-4 years & haven't broken or cracked yet, would last better painted tho. Mine are white. They had green & color you have also at the 99 cent store. Didn't see them this year. Love your long 1/2 barrel thing too at back of pic. Wipe the metal down with alcohol before you paint it & try not to touch it except on handles so when it is dry from alcohol, it will keep paint on. Jan

Some of the best exterior glues I have found are E-6000, and GE Exterior Adhesive for Windows and Doors. I especially love the E-6000 which is available everywhere. I get it at Wal-Mart in the Crafts section. Also copper- The home stores like Menard's and Home Depot have those vinyl tiles for ceiling and kitchen, that look like copper. You could get some of those and make roofing tiles with them. Just cut to the desired size and shape with shears. You'll find lots of ideas in the vinyl tile section. -Sprout

Be careful if you open that bottle or wash it. Sometimes fumes can remain or be reactivated by adding water. open the stopper so it is not going to give you whiff in your direction. Could have had something else in it also! Neat stuff. Halloween ladder-that's a 1st! Sounds cute! Will be handy to place often used tools. So your partner in crime bought all the rest $240. LOL, Seagrass, unless there are tools and fishing equipment, Elery would just tell me to have a really nice time.

katie, nice find. An already seasoned cast iron skillet AND the waffle iron. The scoops I've tried to use for muffins and cupcakes and I don't know what I do wrong, but I make a heckuva mess. I can use them for cookies, but it takes forever. I guess I need a class, wanna come to Michigan again and show me how?

Please have someone with a sensitive volt/ohm meter to test the waffle iron's wiring and see if there is any leakage before using it.

In older appliances, the heating element is not very well insulated to the metal case, and as you can see, the iron is not electrically ground.

Even if it tests OK, do not use it near water, unless you plug it in a GFI ground fault protected outlet.

I hope the waffle maker works for you and is fine. My husband, who is a waffle making fool, would have traded me for that little prize I suspect. Very cool item you found there.

Love all of it. Right up my alley. I have the largest scoop. Once had the red one but it 'disappeared' with some other old red stuff. Really like the small black one, never had that one. The modern one is the one I use for my cookies. I like making cookies with a small scoop. Then when you eat four it's not quite as bad. Dig the wire whip too. Not wanting to leave old utensils behind is probably how I got the majority of mine. Nice haul.

The waffle iron is excellent. About 30 years ago I had a hard time passing up all those old waffle irons. Every one I ever got worked. As DCArch pointed out they can be a bit... shocking. I still have about three or four of them.

Great stuff.....that whisk makes the best gravy.....just swish it into the flour and fat in the roaster and slowly add broth or milk...
I had a waffle iron of the same vintage....made wonderful waffles....it was so well seasoned they just slid right out of the iron. Had to watch the polarity of the plug because you could get a little buzz when you touched the metal....but no biggie, if that happened just reverse the plug.
Mine was round....not sure what happened to it. Think it was a 1940 vintage.

Sorry to contradict. This concerns life safety.

Old appliance wiring does not conform to Class I, Class II or Class III wiring practices. Clothe insulation or rubber insulation typically used in vintage appliances can age and frequently crack and electrical leakage can occur.

In the situation in which a leakage is present, I do not think reversing the plug for alternating current electrical source can prevent electric current to pass from the appliance thru your body to the ground path, and causing dangerous electric shock. Depending on the location of the leak in the ohm path of the circuit, reversing the polarity may make it worse.

I hope I am wrong. It is possible.

Reversing polarity is a practice in audio electronics sometimes to eliminate interference and background hum.

Amnother thing to check out ( I am very sorry, don't mean to be negative. Just want to be safe)

In vintage high-heat appliances, two kinds of insulations frequently were used.

1. Mica
2. Asbestos.

Make sure you find out and handle accordingly.

I'll trade ya a "lightly used" Waring Pro waffle iron for that garage sale find! :) lol The nonstick waffle irons just don't make as good a waffle, IMO.

Great haul. Love the scoops also.
