Question about an extramarital affair??

Not me, though. My married friend has reconnected with her married ex-boyfriend. He was her first boyfriend. Even though we are almost 50, she is very naive. She has been talking about him a lot the last few months, but yesterday she told me the extent of their "friendship". Apparently, they have not been physically intimate, but are "emotionally intimate", and spend a fair amount of time together. She revealed that she has fantasies about them having a life together.

Frankly, I tried to discourage the conversation, and then when she insisted on discussing it, I delicately told her that I thought she would get hurt and regret it. He was not nice to her in the past, and I told her that was still part of his character, that he was just not showing that side of himself to her at this time. I let her know that this "relationship" isn't fair to the spouses. I then pointed out that it's easy to romanticize under these circumstances, and I let it go at that. Whatever she decides to do will be her decision, and her business.

She feels that you only have "one chance at happiness in life". I would like to see her happy. For the record though, she only really started complaining a lot about her husband when this guy came back into the picture.

I know that these relationships usually do NOT work out. But does anybody have experience, or know someone, where this kind of thing really did work out for the parties involved? She feels they are "soul mates".
