This comes from one of Real Simple magazine's daily e-mails:

You're not supposed to laminate original birth certificates or Social Security cards because doing so makes them "altered" and thus questionable.

Dunno if any of you have been in a situation because of this, but it's interesting...

We have had ours laminated for years and never have had any problems.. I know alot of people that have done this..

Mine has been laminated also for years...I think at least 40 years. No one has ever said anything. I think I got mine done at the S.S. office.

I tried the chalk line a while back--the ants apparently hadn't been told it was a 'do not cross' sign. Alcohol is the best way I've found to clean windows. Putting sugar in corn while cooking will add a little sweetness, but it makes the corn tougher. I just buy supersweet corn at the farm stands--it doesn't need sugar. for cleaning vases with narrow necks, I break up a denture cleaning tablet or 2, drop in and add warm (not hot) water. Interestingly, when I took a pate de verre class (molding glass pieces from frit), the instructor--who was a nationally known glass artist also used the denture cleaner method for cleaning the plaster bits of the molds off the molded pieces. Elmer's glue also works for splinters. Spread it on over the area, let dry and peel off the glue--the spinter usually comes with it. Murphy's oil soap also works well on crayon marks if they're on something like wood. Baking soda is my #1 go-to cleaner in the house. It takes those brown specks off frying pans and ranges, removes KoolAid and Grape juice stains from formica, safely scours surfaces that can't tolerate real cleanser or steel wool pads, it disinfects, deoderizes, is cheap, readily available... I buy it in 5 pound bags, and keep a decorative jar of it on my kitchen sink, since I use it pretty much every day.

Thanks to dim4fun for the interesting link. I am a lighting novice so I had no idea that there was a difference between one dimmer and another. Our cans were installed today and they put in temporary switches. Our contractor said he will put in dimmers, but I don't know how much he knows about different types of dimmers, particularly in light (no pun intended) of our intent to use CFLs. Davidr has posted dimmable CFL's on another thread. I wonder if they work with different types of dimmers such as the ones discussed in this thread. I'm hoping he's lurking on this thread to follow-up. Also, is there a dimmable CFL that doesn't look like a CFL (with the loopy tubes). It is OK for it to be a cool light as we will have xenon undercabinet lights and a couple of halogens (2 pucks in wood trim over sink and 3 mini-pendants over the center island and its attached table). Besides, our countertop is a light color and we want the cool light to bring out the accents in the granite. Anyone out there who can help here? Thanks.

Re: cornmeal and ants. Have been having a problem with ants on my sunporch. They seem to be living underneath and coming up through cracks in the tile floor. There's no way for me to get to where they live to spray (and I don't like sprays anyway). So I mixed up some cornmeal and borax in a little deli container lid and left it near where they've been arriving. It's been about a week, and the problem has considerably slowed. BUT they seem to be 'burying their dead' in the cornmeal mixture. I've actually seen a live ant dragging and leaving a dead one there! and there were several little carcasses last I looked. But hey--if it works, without dangerous chemicals, or smells that will give me respiratory problems, I'm thrilled.

Birth Certificates in Ontario cannot be laminated, not sure about other Provinces. I have had mine since I was born and back then the birth certificate was sent to you laminated. Our Social Insurance cards were plastic, not sure what they are today.

My birth certificate card is torn and taped and has been that way for over 40 years damaged back in the days I carried it in my back pocket for ID to rent roller skates. When I applied for a new passport a few years ago I had to remove the tape before they would accept it for ID. You know how hard it is to remove 40 year old tape? LOL

There is an official seal on these documents and laminating them makes the seal imperceptable.

My social security card has been laminated for 50 years without any problems but it doesn't have a raised seal.

It's a good idea to order an extra birth certificate and social security card to keep in your safe deposit box or other secure place. A few years ago I ordered extra copies for everyone in the family and we keep them in our safe.

My ss card says right on it not to laminate it. I'm 50. I never thought about b certificates, but, you are right, those should not be either. I have been told when purchasing copies to be sure not to crease them where the seal is, either.

unemployment will not take a laminated SS card. Learned this years ago when a lot of us were applying & one of the men had had his lamintated...this was in the days when we still carried them in our wallets, & he'd laminated his for protection.

The kids' SS cards came with instructions not to laminate. I still have my original birth certificate, but had to get a new copy last year. The old one doesn't meet the current standards. It looks like a photocopy on white paper. The raised seal has been worn down.
