opinions on pedestals for fl

I have a bosch w/d set. DH made a pedestal for them. I contantly have things going behind them and falling off.

Does anyone have them on the ground with a counter on top? It seems so much more practical, even if it does require some bending.

I now have a downstairs laundry too so it's only half the wash it used to be up herer.

I like that look and in Europe and other places many kitchens have the washer and dryer in them, under the counter top.

What does moving your laundry downstairs have to do with having half of the wash to do?

I'm sorry I wasn't more clear. I have a f/l set upstairs and a t/l set downstairs now. I only do the upstairs laundry upstairs and the downstairs laundry downstairs.

I'd only have half the amount of bending and stooping as I would if I only had one w/d set.

hi beckyg75 - I love the look of pedestal sinks, and if it's in good condition, I guess I would think about other options for storage. Think about what you would need to store in this bathroom - kids don't have a lot of "products," so I am guessing the main things you will need are towels, toilet paper and maybe cleaning supplies (although, you will want these out of reach of the kids). Could you fit a small, furniture style, linen closet in there somehow? Some of them are only 10-12-14 inches deep... Check out JC Penney website - they have a lot of inexpensive storage options. I think Costco has a linen closet on their webiste now too. I wish I had one handy! :( Picture long rectangle w/ a 6 wide x 5' high window (pretty much the entire wall) at one end. Other end is shower and toilet (separate) , with a long double vanity between them (tall storage towers on either end of vanity). If that helps. Six foot takes up the whole area, leaving 1 foot on either side. 5.5 would leave a little more space.

I think vibration can be an issue for any front loader, regardless of whether you put them on a pedestal or not. You could have a platform built, covered and faced with the same flooring you are using throughout the room, and have a small lip-- half an inch or so-- on the front so if they started to 'walk', they couldn't fall off. It would cost you the storage space in the bottom of those pedestals, though.

My camera batteries are dead, so I'll have to post a pic later. I built mine in place, attached to the floor. I had to do it this way because my basement floor isn't exactly level or smooth. Anyway, I built a fame out of 2x6 lumber, basically like you would build a floor, with joists on 14" centers. I covered it with 2 lays of 3/4" plywood. The second layer was purely to add extra height. I also used plywood around the outside edges. I used a layer of cork on top for some sound/vibration damping. When I eventually tile the floor, I'll place tile up the sides of the platform as well.

My quick fix for the things falling off was to take a large cardboard box and cut to place on top of the f/l set to keep items from falling behind and between. A more permanent version of this is on the honey do list . . . but it hasn't been done yet.

My FLs are directly on the floor with a counter built over them. It's the perfect place to fold laundry--I can't imagine having it any other way.

Putting the machines on pedestals makes the top surface of the machines useless unless you're 6 feet tall!

As for the bending, well--we all need a little exercise. I just consider it to be part of doing laundry.

I have FLs at my home and weekend lake place. Both are without pedestals and also without a counter over. I didn't think pedestals were necessary since I'd been bending over to unload my dryer for about 25 years and never felt the need to have my dryer on a pedestal. I think pedestals are marketing genius that came along with the popularity of FL washers - and was very well received by our increasingly sedentary society. I also don't have a counter - the top of the machines provides for a nice, flat working surface at perfect height for me. My laundry spaces are also just not right for a counter type installation. I like that look though someone else suggested in another thread that it might make it a little harder to service the machines.

I have the bosch 500 set, with no pedestals and no counter...

I take the clothes directly from the dryer to hangers or a basket and then the basket to the top of my bed... mind you the top of the bed is almost at my waist height... I fold and "pile" by person there... until done and then have each person come and claim their clothes...

Why would you need a shelf/counter on top of the machines??? They have flat tops.
