Can I get a 30' sink base cabinet made with drawers?
Comments (7)i found the to-scale drawing i made of a 30" base cabinet i liked, with an inset door and 2 drawers. the cabinet itself is 30" wide by 32" high, without counter; the countertop will have to be longer if you want any overhang. i plan to build this myself, for my kids' bathroom. i think its a nice looking cabinet. here are some details of the front that might help you. there is a false drawer front (which could be a tilt-out) at the top of the cabinet. it's 4 1/2" tall x 25 1/4" long. above and below it are the top and middle horizontal pieces (rails) of the frame, each at 2 1/4" wide. this covers the basin area. below, starting at 9" down from the cabinet's top (not including the counter top) are the door and drawers. the door is 12 3/4" wide x 16 7/8" tall. the inner edge of the door is in the center of the cabinet. the drawers are each about 10 1/2" wide x 7 1/2" tall. the vertical members on the right, left and middle of the face frame (stiles) are 2 1/4" wide, as are the top, middle and bottom rails (horizontal members.) in addition, it has 4" tall legs, which are the tapered ends of the stiles. since the drawers are not at the very top, they don't interfere with the basin. and if you wanted all drawers and no door, you could modify it....See MoreCan I get drawers in 30' wide sink base cab?
Comments (13)This is for a new house, so there's no existing plumbing to consider. I know the pipes could be offset, like they do for wheelchair users, but that doesn't even seem necessary. All our cabinetry will be built by a local shop; our GC usually builds higher-end houses than ours, which I've seen, so I'm confident he has some cabinetmakers who can handle this. So, let me check my figures. If my 14" to the left of the center pipe is correct, we remove 3/4" for plywood carcass on that side, let's say a generous 1" on the left side of the drawers for their sides and clearance. And 2" on the right side for the drawer sides, 3/4" plywood vertical piece , and clearances. Frameless cabinetry, with undermount drawer slides. I've got 9.5" left as the interior drawer width. That is HUGE in that space. (Remember, I have 2 drawers now totally 8" and it's sufficient for my needs.) I think for sure I could have 8" interior dimension. And I'll have a stack of them. The ones below can be used by other people, since I can't reach them. jon: No offense here, but I don't understand why it would be difficult for a competent cabinetmaker to make this simple cabinet. What am I missing here? He doesn't have to make shaped drawers, like Blum's sink wraparound drawer. He just has to measure correctly. And he'll charge me more to measure accurately? Custom cabinet shops are surely used to building things a little different than what I can buy off the shelf. I guess if they want too much money, then DH, who is a relatively new cabinetmaker, can make it himself for a lot less money. He just finished one for another bath. I have furniture for him to build, so I don't want to sidetrack him on this project, but I can. And I can do the design work. This cannot be that hard. Also, the cabinet shop is getting the work for the entire house, with built-ins in kitchen, laundry, mudroom and 3 baths, including medicine cabinets and wall cabinets there. They should be able to make us a reasonable price on this....See More6 3/4" "deep" drawer depth too shallow?
Comments (11)Salex, I knew I recognized your name. I believe you commented on one of my earlier posts about building cabinets yourself. When we first moved in we were just going to add an island and DH was going to build it, which I was fine with but we've had some big changes since then. He was laid off suddenly shortly after we bought the house and I had to go back to work (the timing worked out as my son just entered kindergarten).. He did find more work and we are much better off then we were before with me working as well, however our kitchen is extremely dysfunctional and he doesn't help with any cooking or cleaning. Working and trying to hand wash dishes for my family and deal with the wonky space with no storage and I am at the end of my rope. I do not have patience for DIY right now when it comes to this major source of angst in my life. There are so many things in our house that he could work on and build for and I would welcome everyone one of them but I just can't get excited about him doing the kitchen. I think he has most of the tools you mentioned but does not have a good source of wood. He also really isn't "in practice" with woodworking. He knows it, but hasn't honestly done much in the 10 years we've been married (think he did more when he was younger) so I'm not confident in him doing this. I do think he's capable of figuring it out, I just don't know what we'll have to go through to get to the end result. I think I'm about to find out though. He's insistent on doing it and as much as I am against it I can't just go drop $8K on cabinets if he's not in agreement with me. I thought I'd gotten him open to at least considering buying if I found something decent at a decent price but I guess not. I'm sorry, I'm feeling very disappointed right now. I'm not ready for this journey. Thank you for the link about the drawer in a drawer, I'll check it out!...See MoreLower Cabinet Drawers Too Wide?
Comments (56)I couldn’t agree more with the latest comments. I only have the best of intensions but at the end of the day, it’s your kitchen. You need to do what works best for you and your family. But I make one my last post for a prep sink. I highly recommend a prep sink on the island as @mama goose_gw zn6OH mocked up with the green lines. You won’t need to cross into the cleaning zone where the kids will be working WHEN you need access to the sink to rinse vegetables or drain a pot of pasta. Personally, I don’t like the thought of carrying a 5+ gallon stock pot (homemade tomato sauce or chicken stock) and risk burning a small child who runs into my legs. I was that child and I am fortunate I only have a burn scar the inside of my ankle; at least on the my front of my body that I can see. This might be going overboard but you can train your family to call out “HOT BEHIND” when ever someone needs to pass through. I come from a large family who likes to cook. I have 3 sisters, 2 foodie BILs, a mom and MIL. We trip over each other in the kitchen and push our way through each other to access to the sink whenever we try making a meal together. As kids I didn't really notice the lack of a prep sink but as adults, I find it more pleasant to cook with them when we each get our own sink. One person can be prepping while another person is washing up. And there’s aways a free sink to wash hands or rinse a glass. It was one of my many must haves. If you still don’t see the need for a prep sink, please at a minimum, look into how much work it will be to add into later if you change your mind down the road. Like, how will it be vented and drained. Do you need a new drain stack or can they tie it into the existing sink drain. Will you have odd shaped bulk heads in the room below the kitchen. Also I’m very glad to hear you’ve decided to move the microwave out of your prep zone. You don’t want someone trying to open the microwave while you're working with a sharp knife in your hands. I know; I'm over the top. I worked in a kitchen before so I’ve seen my share of cuts and burns......See Morewilliamsem
