I think it depends on what else you use your laundry room for. If the counter will be for folding laundry only and you want a high-end look, you could do granite. If you want that high-end look that is more durable, go with quartz or corian. We, however, use the laundry room counter for countless things that would ruin most surfaces. Hubby lays power tools on it (he can't put anything away), he will occasionally super-glue something together on it, set a can of paint on it - you get the idea. So what do I have? Laminate. Currently re-doing my laundry room and going with laminate again. Its cheap, durable, can be easily replaced. AND there are tons of choices of laminate. You could spend $100 or thousands of dollars, so it depends on your budget and what you intend to do on this counter. But depending on how much counter space you have, you maybe could get a remnant of granite fairly reasonable. My opinion is that altho I want it to look fairly nice, its still a laundry room and I won't be entertaining guests in there :)

I'm not sure why you'd want to iron on the countertop, unless you mean just some simple touch-up pressing - not serious ironing. To iron properly, you need a padded board with sufficient vent holes to allow steam and moisture to pass though the ironing surface. Ironing on any type of countertop won't allow that to happen. Why not consider a a fold-away board of some type. Models are available that fold up into a cupboard or that collapse into a drawer. For the additional price that you'd pay for stone instead of a laminate countertop, you could more than pay for a very deluxe fold-away ironing center. I recommend units from Iron-A-Way. I have one in my laundry room that I use for quick pressing jobs. For big ironing projects, I still use a regular free-standing board, mainly so that I can set it up in front of the TV and watch videos while I iron. Frankly what influenced my decision was what the granite fabricator had in the remnant warehouse that matched my decor. I got a white 7'X2' quartz top installed for $70. I was having a granite backsplash installed in the kitchen at the same time so perhaps that influenced the low cost of the LR countertop. I am happy with the LR project.

I'm doing plain, cheap, white solid surface. My fabricator has a non-Corian line that the color worked okay -- mine is a fairly large folding area and I'd rather spend my money where I'll enjoy it more!! I figured this will be easy to clean and nice and smooth. Arlene
