I think they sleep right outside their airplanes on the tarmac. They all brought their own supples of food and water and their generators.

I've been curious too. I think they must being their own supplies, but they can't be showering?? Or have access to toilets?

With their million dollar pay, I am sure they are some what comfortable. Maybe not the best conditions, but they will survive. Unlike the Haiti people. Plus I think they might be in danger to a degree due to their being reporters.

Those big C-130s that are flying in can easily bring portable showers and portapotties. And once the airport is up and running smoothly, they can fly to Gitmo (50 miles away), the Dominican Republic, or even Florida, if they need R & R.

I have been enjoying, well, "enjoying" is not the right word, but you know what I mean, Anderson Cooper on CNN and Steve Harrigan on Fox.

It really is a horrible mess.

I'm sure that, having been warned by earthquake experts a year and a half or so ago, that no doubt they'd suffer a major earthquake sometime in the future, but not having money to build infrastructure more durably (e.g. rebar in concrete), I'm sure that many of the surviving government leaders who knew of that and had some responsibility for it must be feeling terrible these days. Even had they had more money, there was too short a time for them to have been able to build improved buildings.

It must be hard on these reporters and aide works to have food and water and watch the Haitian people starve. I don't know how they do it.

Enjoying...I've had the same thought about the reporters. It must take an incredible emotional toll on them as well. The coverage has been so thorough. AC is so good.

I hope today they can get some food and water distributed. At least the people are not cold. That's about the only good thing going on.

I imagine everyone saw the video of S. Gupta caring for the baby with the head injury. After he did the first aid, he said something to the effect that she needs antibiotics now. We'll see if we can find some antibiotics. It sounded so helpless, hopeless, pitiful.

I posted this sentiment on the other Haiti thread: Even though I am an employee of the media establishment, I am so conflicted every time a natural disaster like this happens: Reporters must go and report on these things, photogs must take pictures so the rest of the world can grasp the reality, but as anchor people and reporters etc are there, don't they use up some of the scarce resources there are? I know they probably bring food, water, etc., for themselves, but they are also taking up precious space. And if they're bringing their own supplies, they're taking up space of others wanting to come in and bring supplies (tho I know the airport is quite limited right now). They have certain things available to them--restrooms, for example--while some residents have gone 2 days + without food, we are told.

But Socks etc. are right that no one can NOT suffer an emotional toll being there. Just looking at some of the photos has been distressing.

I understand supplies are available at airports. Aid is coming in but they're trying to get it dispersed to the Haitian citizens.

IMO a government should ban reporters from these disasters(although there is no government of consequence in Haiti). Let there be a reporting pool one-tenth the size of these grand-standing hordes who supply news to all the outlets.

I'm sick of these people. We *know* they have to have their faces and voices on TV -- or their programs will lose market share -- but it is SO GALLING! THEY are eating just fine and THEY have power and water.

"Doctor" Gupta -- puleese! ("I'm a Doctor, AND I play one on TV!") Real medico's are not mugging for the camera; they're much too busy doing REAL lifesaving work. You wouldn't want to see what they look like, weary and covered in blood, not looking a little warm and holding an infant so a pretty nurse can wrap its head in gauze.

Pammy, did you see the shot where a woman helping carry...a body I think it was...had to maneuver around Anderson Cooper as he was talking into the microphone? Now that's just not right.

chisue - Did you see the report where supposedly the UN ordered the evacuation of Dr's at one of the clinic because of rioting fears, so they all left. Only "Doctor" Gupta stayed to help those that had just had surgery, treatments or needed treating.

But, yes, I agree that reporters and "TV Doctors" could be in the way. On the other hand, I believe that without this 24/7 news coverage, monetary aid would be much lessened.

Sanjay Gupta is a practicing neurosurgeon. He is not a "TV" doctor. Embedded with the US Navy during the Iraq war, he actually, gasp, performed life-saving surgery. He has taken flak, though, for not always being on the politically correct side.

IMO he is doing a great job. It's good to have someone reporting who actually understands the implications of what's going on in Haiti now. He spent all night Thursday in that tent which the UN doctors had deserted, with about twenty patients, and did not appear on camera. As for the baby girl that he cared for, often an intense story about a single victim will raise more money than an anchor exclaiming about 100,000 dead could ever do.

Toilet facilities aren't an issue. Between makeshift, in the planes and the like, the reporters aren't suffering. Shower facilities are likely more limited but like anyone who has been in combat or on a camping trip, sponge baths keep a person as clean and fresh as they want to be. Many people scoff at a sponge bath as not being sanitary like a shower or bath but considering this is what a vast majority of people get prior to surgery, it can't be all bad.

The reporters and their hype. I needn't say what I think about that. And Joyful is right. The big-names get the big-bucks. The grunts make surprisingly little and don't make what a starting schoolteacher or a letter carrier make. And they often work 6-7 days/week and over 50 weeks a year to get it.

Some reporting for the documentation and historical aspect is important, but they could pool reporters as on many other events and do as good a job.

I know he has a medical degree. (Glad he's not MY surgeon -- when might he be available?) His primary -- and extremely profitable -- JOB is playing The Doctor on TV. He is very good at that.

I was much more moved by a piece on American medics trying to treat people with crushed limbs with ineadquate-to-no medical supplies. There were no surgeons available to do necessary amputations.

If there were ever a time for pool coverage, Haiti today is it.

Why do they send so many reporters? Can't they share the feed?

We even have LOCAL reporters there from the NYC area; cannot understand why they are not using the ABC network footage. What a waste of $$$ that could be spent elsewhere.
