which seer and hspf model heat pumps would you recommend?

Hi,

I'm noticing that on the Bryant Evolution Series heat pumps they're offering SEER 16 and SEER 18 models with HSPFs of 7.7 and 9.0. Are other brands/models topping this company in SEER and HSPF ratings? Are there any cons (downsides) to using this particular company/model? Please let me know.

Those are marketed ratings. A given outdoor unit matched with differant indoor units will have differant ratings. You need an AHRI certificate to be sure exactly what you are getting. Nordyne with their MAYTAG, Westinghouse and a couple of other brands have a system called IQ Drive. It is considered to be the most efficient system avaialable. I have the MAYTAG 23 SEER AC with a gas furnace in my house and love it.

Remember to look for Heat Pumps that qualify for the tax credit. And Contractor is more important than equipment.

For Bryant they have more than 78 different Heat Pump combination to meet the tax qualification.

Evolution 288ANA Is good, I have field tested this to run around 1120 watts and hour in low speed (15cts hr from my electric company 34cts High speed) 3 ton heat pump.
286ANA 16 SEER there is a new model 266ANA coming out very soon that will take over the 286ANA series.
The 266ANA is the only 2 speed 5 Ton Heat Pump system that meets the tax credit from Bryant, Carrier twin brother also has their model. I am not aware of any other brand that has a qualifying 2 speed 5 ton system.

For Maytag, they have just released the IQ Drive heat pump.
Highest SEER rating on the market. I'm trying to get real dealer and customer input on these since they are brand new. These systems it is said will run continuously but at a very low cost rate.
The only concern I have is if there is still an low volume but high pitch noise created by the inverter outside.
Next the Parent Company is looking to file chapter 11 but should not effect anything. It's just a re organization.

also they do not have 5 ton systems with the IQ.

Every once in a while FS has email sales. Get on their email list. Last year, a $200 model was being sold for half price. a great bargain to say the least. I think that the moderators here took off my last thread for great FS deals, as I have not seen it when I did a search. Admittedly, I really amd not very happy with this forum searches, but if you keep it simple with a few words, it should give quite a lot of info.. Rolls are cheaper than bags, and there are a few alternate sources for them. Keep in mind the plastic bag material should have the embossed quilted surface on one side, so the vacuum can pass through and properly empty the bags before they get the final seal. I think Ruthie had got a bag material that lacked the quilting so they didn't get fully collapsed as they should. I don't reuse the bags, but if it were for dry things, they may be fine to reuse. I also bought an impulse heat sealer (from eBay) to make the bags from rolls. It reduces the wear on the heater strip on the FS machine. My favorite is the ability to pull a vacuum on Ball canning jars. The lids go between the jar and the vacuum hose with attached adapter, and once air is let back in, the blast will push the lid hard against the canning jar making quite a vacuum tight seal. I even use the adapter with a higher capacity vacuum pump to make some pickled peppers that simply will not survive any heat processing of any kind. Avoid using the FS with any liquids that might get accidentially pulled into the vacuum pump. My higher powered piston type vacuum pump has big moisture trap that can collect up to a quart of liquid should it ever see any while pumping.

for eoz these are my minimum specs for a new HP system. both outside and inside units should be replaced to have a properly matched system. 15 SEER, 12.5+ EER, 9 HSPF best matching VS air handler full BTUs in both cooling and heating for your rated size R-410a refrigerant(same as Puron) scroll compressor preferred electronic demand defrost preferred thermostat with "dehumidify on demand" feature staged backup heat strips new and correctly sized refrigerant lineset you want a thorough inspection of your ductwork system. size, overall condition, supply and return lines, insulation qualities, leak test, etc. any hot/cold spot issues in your home should be addressed. I would only use authorized dealers for the various brands that provide quotes. see mfg websites. I would look at Trane/AmStd,Rheem/Rudd,Carrier/Bryant. I would not purchase a new HP system that did not have electronic demand defrost. IMO

For those looking at this post, a very nice 3 ton HP system. Very good AHRI performance/efficiency numbers. The air handler while high eff is not var speed. Buyer should verify ability to register the warranty for compressor and parts. IMO Here is a link that might be useful: Rheum RPQL HP System

these are the minimum specs one should consider on a new HP system and of course you do want to take advantage of the fed govt tax credit.

15 SEER, 12.5+ EER, 9 HSPF
best matching var speed air handler
full BTUs both cooling and heating for rated size
R-410a refrigerant
new and correctly sized refrigerant lineset
scroll compressor
electronic demand defrost preferred
staged backup heat strips
thermostat with "dehumidify on demand" feature

Look at Carrier Performance 15 "H" model(sister mdl Bryant Preferred 15 "H" model) or Trane XL15i(sister mdl Am Std Heritage 15). The new Carrier two stg Performance 16 and sister mdl Bryant Preferred 16 are being rolled out and worth a look if interested in two stage.

While I like Trane and AS, they are clearly behind in performance/eff numbers especially for the larger size systems.

what is your location? what size system are you replacing?

of course any new system needs to be correctly sized and I always recommend that ductwork system be inspected and if you have any hot/cold spots in your home, now is the time for this to be addressed.
