What fuel for Southern Indiana?

We are going to build a new house here in southern Indiana (near Louisville, KY), and natural gas is not available. I don't think geothermal is an option because the bedrock is so near the surface. We do plan to have propane for the kitchen stove. My only experience has been with natural gas, so I am at a loss on heat source for the new house, or how to begin researching it. Any suggestions you might have would be appreciated.

Ground source heat pumps don't need to have vertical wells. If you have enough property you can have loops relatively close to the surface. Find a local, certified installer and talk.

Your choices are heat pump, propane and fuel oil.

Are you kidding - bedrock near the surface is a driller's dream come true! Like a hot knife through butter - go for it!

Debra, it certainly does seem early. I have nine scapes on the MOONLIT MASQUERADE clump. I also have 10 scapes on STRAWBERRY CANDY that will probably open next week. I was wondering about reblooms from last year since we had so much rain. Both MM and SC are listed as early-mid season and my first STELLA DE ORO just bloomed today. Lots of other STELLA clumps in the area have been blooming for at least a week, so I guess it's where I have mine planted that has caused it to be so far behind. Vickie

Different cameras do funky things with the red and purple tones. As a result, pictures often need commentary to adjust the hues. Your Waiting in the Wings seems to have the same slight bud count that mine has; I'm afraid this is the last year for mine.

I have one feeder that has been out since March 21.st I put one out very very early and sometime have one out all winter because of western vagrants that will be migrating back westerward. Then around this time of year I add another for any early spring rubythroated hummers. When they are heading north (or west) there is very little natural food for them in the way of blooming plants that contain nectar. Feeders for a migrant can make the difference to whether they are able to survive or not espeically when we have up and down temps like this year. Even plants in the southern gardens are suffering dammage and a feeder or two can help them survive. Penny

If you can't do geothermal, spend some good money on the shell/insulation and just use a heat pump and electric resistance.

In most areas of the country (and I am pretty sure Indiana) electricity is cheaper than anything else (except NG and coal and do you really want to deal with coal?)
