Blooming in Southern Indiana

Yesterday was my first daylily bloom, MOONLIT MASQUERADE. Just the beginning.

Nice shot! Isn't that one blooming abnormally early for you there in Indiana? I'm thinking yours is a rebloom scape from fall, too.

Debra, it certainly does seem early. I have nine scapes on the MOONLIT MASQUERADE clump. I also have 10 scapes on STRAWBERRY CANDY that will probably open next week. I was wondering about reblooms from last year since we had so much rain.

Both MM and SC are listed as early-mid season and my first STELLA DE ORO just bloomed today. Lots of other STELLA clumps in the area have been blooming for at least a week, so I guess it's where I have mine planted that has caused it to be so far behind.

Well, yes, in Michigan. Other than your climate having a somewhat longer and somewhat warmer growing season, not much difference. The main things I would suggest are either 1) start it early indoors about 8 weeks, or buy transplants; 2) give it fairly rich, well drained soil; 3) space about a foot apart at a minimum to give it room to grow; 4) water faithfully if you don't get at least an inch of rain per week. It does really well in containers because you can control the water and nutrients.

Thanks for the nice comments everyone. The sitting garden started out with me just wanting a little bridge over the drain area that runs out from our garage. I was afraid someone was going to run around the house and twist their ankle in the dip that was forming. So my husband and I built the bridge, he dug out the drainage area a little more and filled it in with rocks. Then one thing led to another and this is what we ended up with. I would rather have put in some other type of material for the walkway, but these square pavers was simpler. My husband does a lot of the work, so I didn't want to ask him to do a walkway with a bunch of bricks, although I think that would have been more subtle and natural. Someday, it will be filled in and the plants will soften up the blocks to where they don't have such a cold look to them. Vickie

Different cameras do funky things with the red and purple tones. As a result, pictures often need commentary to adjust the hues. Your Waiting in the Wings seems to have the same slight bud count that mine has; I'm afraid this is the last year for mine.

MOONLIT MASQUERADE must absolutely love your garden! Nice picture. Mine are not even thinking of having scapes yet. Neither do my STRAWBERRY CANDYS. You must be doing something special in South Indiana :-))

Nice picture. I just planted Moonlit Masquerade last weekend and it is nice to see what it will really look like.

LOL, Rita:) Well I did spread 12-12-12 all over my flowers last week, but the scapes were already up. I think we just got lucky that last year we had all that rain and this year is reaping some of the rewards.

Thanks Nancy. I always like seeing what other people's garden flowers look like too. They are usually more natural looking. You will like MM.

Its a beauty,Vicky.Mine bloomed lat year, nothing yet this year, b ut peddles was all pinched last year.Hope it gets over that,for this year.
