I think it was my Grandma that came up with shredded carrots in Jello. She also was a fan of cottage cheese in Jello.

Wash 'em down with a good cold beer and you don't have to worry about cholesterol. It also negates calories too, as I understand. (It must be true! I saw it on the internet!)

But did you have to turn my stomach with cottage cheese in Jell-O??? UFF-DA!!!! Tolerable (I guess) in lasagna and that's the only use for cottage cheese in my recipe book!

There was that Carmel Cheetos recipe floating around for a while. How about Carmel Bacon? Come to think of it didn't the state fair have chocolate dipped bacon on the menu?

Well, thanks a lot Cynic,,,, I came close to having to clean off my computer. I was eating supper as I was reading your post and almost sprayed the machine. I had just taken a fork full of....shredded carrots in jello. LOL. We call it sunglow salad because its carrots & crushed pineapple in orange jello. But back to the subject. In my opinion there really isn't a bad way to serve bacon. I like grilled Swiss cheese and bacon sandwiches. Dottie

Did any of you see the gorgeous use of bacon in the most recent Williams-Sonoma catalog? They wove the bacon into a lattice work design and I think baked it that way. Then they topped a skillet meal with it, having made the lattice exactly for that size pan. It sure looked pretty.

Had to go look for that one. This must be it.

And gee, sorry Dotmom... didn't know you did "Gallagher" impressions! :D But please tell me you don't put an inch of ketchup on top of meatloaf while cooking it! Fine after it's cooked, but not before! :)

When I make spagetti, I cook cut up bacon and onion, as the basis of my sauce... no hamburger to be found/ drain some of the grease, add garlic, whatever spices, the tomato suace and or paste... it is really good.

Have you ever tried the bacon wrapped pretzel rods? You use those half inch thick, several inches long, pretzels, and wrap each in a half slice of bacon. Bake until browned, then roll in parmesan cheese. Yummy! Not good for you, but quite a treat for once in a great while!

Here in Texas we say that if it can't be cooked in bacon grease, it ain't worth eatin'. Bacon is at the top, bottom and middle of our food pyramid.
Of course, we also fry cholesterol (fried butter at the State Fair).

food network's magazine had a maple french toast & bacon cupcake recipe a few months ago. knowing DH would like that i mentioned it to him and he made them. i was not in the least bit interested but tried them. surprisingly they were good, a bit sweet to have too often but the bacon which was in the batter and crumbled on top, added a nice salt and depth of flavor. ~ liz

Hmm.. I'm from Texas and I don't eat bacon, but I think that the sweet plus salty thing is a taste that some folks crave.

Oh, never bacon and chocolate, yes, ketchup on meatloaf, yes cottage cheese and veggies and jello! Bacon is fine with pancakes and french toast, eggs or a bacon, lettuce and tomato sandwich, but not that other stuff! Ruin perfectly good bacon? :)

My maternal grandmother, born in 1902, wrote the following recipe inside the back cover of one of my cookbooks:

Sugar & Spice Cookies
3/4 C. bacon grease
1 C. brown sugar
1 egg
1/4 C. molasses
2 t. baking soda
2-1/4 C. flour
1 t. each: ginger, cinnamon & cloves (or 3 t. allspice)

Mix well and chill. Shape into balls the size of a hickory nut, roll in granulated sugar. Bake at 350 about 13 minutes. Love, Grandma.

Grandma grew up with many brothers and sisters on a farm in Wisconsin. Nothing was wasted, including the bacon grease. She wrote the recipe in my book using her best cursive handwriting.....learned in a one-room schoolhouse. Priceless!
