Electrolux Icon High Speed Oven - Microwave - Regrets!
Comments (6)I've had the Same Elux Speed oven for over 4 years now. About 6 months ago, the handle did start coming loose. I downloaded the parts manual for it and I saw the 2 screws were under the front cover. I was gonna fix it but DW says "You have nuff to do--call somebody to fix it" So I did, it took the guy 15 minutes at the most to remove the front cover, He added lock washers to the screws and it has been fine since then. This is our most used appliance, we even used it to boil water, etc when our "Fancy cooktop" took a dump and went to the dump (not an Elux). I use it to make toast, bake potatoes, roast turkey legs, as well as the usual MW duties. We have been very happy with it, and as far as "we're" concerned, there is not a better one made. Yep the Miele will broil and the elux won't but we have never even used our full size Elux Oven for Broiling or its predassor either. We do our grilling & broiling outside, and as some folks have mentioned, You just can't beat one of those infrared broilers and we have that on our BBQ. We did see a complaint about popping corn in a speed oven, I'm not sure it was an Elux speed oven, the problem was resolved (wasn't the speed oven as I recall)--but I can't find that post for ya now. I don't ever recall seeing a problem with the Elux Speed Oven, other than your post so I would not be too hasty to "write it off". So, while I respect my "Dear Desert Friend's" advice, not sure I would "Throw in the towel" just cause He says so! Gary...See MoreWhere is your Microwave Drawer
Comments (4)Ours is in the island. What kind of countertop are you putting in? I'm sure the block we put in the cabinet is right below the corner brace on the cabinet box and we have about an 800 lb slab on top of that brace - that baby isn't going anywhere. Really, if your cabinets are all attached, and attached to the floor and you add the strength/weight of the countertop material - even if it's laminate over particle board, there will be enough resistance for the weight of the microwave and any dish you might have inside when the drawer is fully open...at least IMHO. But, like you said, make sure your screws don't go through your island. You'd be better off making a slightly larger block and pre drilling the holes - so you can add an extra screw or two as you are correct, without much depth for the screw, you will need some extra bite somewhere. Best of luck to you!...See MoreKitchen Island Microwave: built-in trim kit vs microwave drawer
Comments (8)Have had ours since 2008 and I've never regretted it nor have I had any problems with it! In fact, I'm starting on designing/planning our retirement home to build in the future and I plan to include a MW drawer. With the exception of my (very) old Montgomery Wards Convection MW oven, it's lasted the longest. When we remodeled, the MW drawer cost the same as a built-in MW with trim kit. I've had no problems cleaning it. If food is stuck on it, simply boil a cup of water + vinegar for several minutes in the drawer and then wipe clean - the food should be loosened up and wipe off with a swipe. Yes, you do have to lean over and peer into it to see if it's clean, but... I'd much rather have to do that once every week or two compared to having to lean over/squat to use the MW several times a day! A regular MW in an alcove under the counter is not easy to use - you have to bend over or squat to use the controls and to add/remove dishes/food - usually reaching blindly into the MW and trying balance the hot dish as you're struggling to remove it from the MW, balance it to keep it from spilling, and standing back up - all at the same time! Regular/counter top MWs are not designed to be used under the counter - they're designed to be used at counter height or higher. Note that MW drawers have a "child lock", so if you're worried about your children getting into it, lock it when not in use! Oh and having a child lean on the door of a "regular" MW means potentially bring the MW down on top of the child - so be careful. No amount of child locking can prevent that! [I had a friend over a couple of weekends ago who kept trying to push the drawer all the way in and pull it all the way out - without letting the drawer do it's thing (automatically opening w/a gentle pull / automatically closing with a gentle nudge). Not sure why he didn't understand when I explained it to him, but his forcing the drawer open/closed did not damage the drawer in any way.] Sharp makes all MW drawers, so I would stick with a Sharp-branded drawer rather than pay $$$$ for a re-branded MW drawer with a higher-end name - it's the same MW! Here's a thread from 2008 about them. BTW...the concern that someone had 8 years ago about them being short-lived has not panned out. They're becoming more and more popular! http://ths.gardenweb.com/discussions/2688345/microwave-drawer-pros-and-cons?n=42 ....See Morewill I regret not having a microwave in new kitchen?
Comments (36)“I find it hard to believe in this day and age a microwave is a make or break deal in a house sale. You just go and buy one for $100 and put it on the counter. Anyone that is looking and finds the microwave the most important thing I would offer to buy a $100 micro and gift them with it after they buy the house.:))” The issue isn't the $100, it is having to have a microwave eat up counter space. No, if someone really likes a house not having a microwave likely won’t kill the deal, but if there are two similar, or equally good, houses and one has a apace off the counter for a microwave and one it has to sit on the counter, it could absolutely be a turning factor for someone who doesn’t want a large appliance eating up counter space. I personally notice in listing pictures if there is a counter microwave and it isn’t a positive for the house. That said, if the CSO does the same things as a microwave I would think it fine. We looked at one prior to our remodel and there was something we couldn’t do in it that led us to get the microwave drawer instead, but I can’t remember what that was now. I also wouldn’t really care where the microwave was (top cabinet, drawer, in the pantry), as long as it is within the kitchen area. i would agree that putting an outlet for one somewhere would probably be easiest. That way you don’t feel compelled to buy something you don’t think you will use but the next person can have one if they chose....See Moreshelly_k
