Will I regret not getting an inline fan for new vent hood?
Comments (4)Nightflyer, you asked "Will I regret doing an inline fan?". Did you really mean "Will I regret doing an internal fan?"? I think the inline fan is worth it and recommend that you make sure your installer is familiar/experienced with them. Otherwise you may be giving up some of the benefits for which you're paying extra. Please confirm the 25% extra was for a hood with an inline blower vented through the attic vs. a hood with an internal blower also vented through the attic. There shouldn't be a big cost difference between the sheet metal for the two. You should probably find out if there will be any extra carpentry or electrical costs for the inline blower. Now that the weather is cooler, we are getting a cold draft from our hood. I'm not sure it has anything to do with the inline blower, however. Our first step to try to resolve it will be insulating the ductwork (which runs through the attic over the mudroom and garage). If that doesn't work we may need to add another damper. Comments (7)Induction is amazing. It was one of the modern compromises we made in our traditional kitchen, and it's one of the best decisions we made. Once you try induction, there's no going back to gas. It does everything better than our old gas range (both the highs and the lows), and as a bonus is way easier to clean. If you're trying to get sold on an induction cooktop, I can highly recommend the Miele dinners at distributors in larger metro areas. They cook a meal for you using all Miele appliances, and you can see and try the induction yourself with real pots & food. They're free and they happen about once a month in the Seattle area. To make the cooktop fit in better with our 1920s style, we chose a black one (I think they all are black anyway), and inset it into our black soapstone countertops. You hardly even notice it's there. Looks like cotehele did the same thing, but hers is in front of a window so it picks up glare. Because ours is not near a window, it blends in much better. We also wanted a water dispenser, but didn't want the modern look of them built into the fridge. So we installed a glass filler next to our faucet. We went back and forth about whether it made sense to put another water dispenser right next to the faucet (which already dispenses water), but I'm so glad we did. We use it over the faucet for two reasons: the one-handed push operation is simpler than the faucet, and we're able to get a glass of water while somebody else is washing dishes. By not choosing a fridge with a water dispenser, we were able to panel the fridge like a cabinet. Not that they would have done that 100 years ago, but it allows the fridge to blend into the cabinets. And by blending in the fridge, you can create other, more period style focal points (which in our kitchen are leaded glass windows and a breakfast nook). Comments (9)Your existing microwave wiring is probably 12/2, which is used for a standard 20 amp 120 volt plug. Its important to know whether the new 220 volt microwave is rated at 30 amps, and whether it requires a 4-wire range socket (which are now very common). If you need to use 10/3 wiring (10 gauge wire size for 30 amps, 3 wires in the jacket for a range plug) it will be a complete new circuit. Most of the cost will depend on how hard it is to run the wire. The actual wire and breaker are relatively inexpensive. Bruce...See MoreMy biggest kitchen regret-The built-in microwave
Comments (28)I'm confused, do you think the stink lingers because it's built in or do you think it would have happened with any microwave, but you'd just get rid of it if it was a cheapo on the counter? I've only had ones that sat on the counter and ones that were built in over the range with the fan for the range. Hated the location of both because I don't like appliances on the counter and want a hood rather than over range micro. However I never noticed one being more stinky that the other and we use ours a lot, almost daily for heating water, steaming veggies and reheating. I've made popcorn and it lingers and bacon which is even worse (banned hubby from that), but it eventually wet away without any major clean up. I've scorched popcorn, but never torched anything so I'm just trying to figure out is the problem due to the degree of torching or the style of micro? I planned to find a spot for a built in in my remodel, but if it's something about the style that makes the stink linger I wouldn't want that. Please enlighten me! Thanks....See MoreFilipe Custom Woodwork
