HVAC Home Inspection question

I am in the process of buying a home and walked around with the home inspector yesterday. He put the thermostat on heat and the air conditioner operated right along with the heat. I believe this may be a hybrid system and I have no experience with them at all. Is there a normal condition in which a hybrid system would operate the heating and cooling simultaneously? The home inspector was baffled but admitted he didn't know about hybrid systems either so I thought I would put the question out to someone who might know the answer. Could it happen or could the there be a wire crossed somewhere?
