I need a new toaster.....

My old toaster bit the dust after doing its thing for about 15 years. I don't want to do a lot of trial and error...too hard for me to take things back. I want a two slice model, can be either one or two slots. Can anyone recommend one that makes good toast but doesn't cost a small fortune?

I can't help you....I got a cheapie Black and Decker at our local outlet mall and it didn't last a year.
I found an old toaster at a yard sale about 12 years ago for a dollar and it still works great.
I hope you find what you are looking for soon.

I bought a 4 slice Oster toaster earlier this month at CVS for $1.99-no kidding! It must have been included in their Christmas markdowns. It works a lot better than the toaster I had!

I was astonished, then appalled, at the prices of the toasters like Dualit and Breville, which were absolutely not in our ever-tight budget. These guys must be laughing all the way to the bank. We also wanted a toaster that wouldn't take up too much room in our small kitchen. We found the Haier Long-Slot #TST120SS which we have on the counter against the wall. Because it is horizontally-designed (sorry I don't know how to describe it, but it is longer than wide--check the link to see what I mean), it has a small footprint on our counter, against the wall. Frankly, we also think its countdown LED lights a bit silly, nevertheless very cool, and we sometimes stare at them, pre-coffee. At $34, if the Haier breaks in a few years, it's not so bad. We just could never justify spending 5x-10x as much for a Breville or Dualit. Meanwhile, the Haier has been making great toast, poptarts and bagels. In hindsight, perhaps we should have gotten the 4-slice version. Due to its design, the 4-slice is the same length as the 2-slice and only two inches wider, but we didn't notice that when we bought the 2-slice on Amazon. The 2-slice Haier has performed great since we bought it 4 months ago. I think that with any new toaster, there is a bit of a learning curve about the brown-ness settings, but you get to know which setting you like in just a couple of days. Sometimes I think negative reviews of toasters regarding too brown or not brown enough is because people set a new toaster the same way they set their old toaster rather than experimenting to see how the new toaster settings differ. The KA website doesn't give you the model number. Go to the Krups website and find the Krups model number, then search Amazon for that model. I looked at one and it has mixed reviews. I think you want the impossible. You can still get a Proctor cheapie for about $20, and toss it when it dies. I find the $$$ toasters can be a bitter dissapointment because we all have finicky ideas of good toast and if your new expensive one fails your personal test, then what? Anyway, why does everyone fall in line behind the idea that you need to spend a lot on a toaster? Maybe you do, but I think it's because Williams Sonoma put out a line of toaster talk.

Hi all - I stumbled across this site when looking for information on painting my toaster. Has anyone tried this? I've been wanting to paint my toaster like the photos above for quite a while. It is a "cool touch" toaster with plastic on the outside that is not supposed to get hot. I was thinking of using the Plaid paint for plastic but I emailed them and they said the product is not heat resistant and wouldn't advise using it for this project. So maybe I should try the acrylic enamel? Just not sure what to do... has anyone had success?

We just have a toaster oven, and it took forever to find a new one that would toast bread as well as the old GE one we were getting rid of (it caught fire periodically so hard to justify keeping much longer!) We have the compact Breville and it does the job, but I don't think it's quite as good as a toaster would be. Still, it's FAR better than the others we tested--Philips, Cuisinart, Krups, and Hampton Beach. A lot of them dried the toast out because of the way the heating elements work on the toast cycle...the Breville doesn't do this, but also doesn't toast the two sides exactly the same for some reason (so one side will be more lightly browned than the other). It does have a bagel setting that I haven't played with much. Since we use our toaster oven for cooking frequently, it was definitely staying, and we don't have enough counter space to justify having a separate toaster too. If you do and you eat toast regularly (we really just eat it on weekends) it might be worth the space, especially since you already own it.

I don't think they make toasters as good as they used to. I do like the ones with the wider slots which accommodate a bagel or e-muffin. Maybe they are all that way now.

I have a Cuisinart from BBB with a 20 percent coupon. It's ok.

Toasters just don't seem to last well if you shop where there can be comments by people who bought them. I did buy a toaster for my younger son's birthday last year that had rave reviews for the ability to make an English muffin ham and egg sandwich. He is a bachelor in New York City, and I wanted to find something that would let him make a quick meal substitute on nights where he has worked too late to grab a bite to eat. He loves the egg sandwich.

It is an odd looking toaster with a round attachment for the egg sandwich. His friend told him that his mother had one, and that when he and his siblings go home, they fight to be the first to use the toaster for one of those egg sandwiches. So hearing that, he took the toaster home (I had mailed it to his office), and just loved the sandwich too.

They are on sale right now at buy.com and amazon.com. Buy.com is cheaper, I think.

Sheilahoyce, I had never even heard of the toaster you mentioned so I went to Buy.com to look...Is this the one you are talking about...My husband loves egg sandwiches so you have my curiosity peaked...How does the egg cooker part work?

I bought an inexpensive Sunbeam, 2 slice toaster 20 yrs ago. I found this one at Farm & Fleet. It was small in size and has performed well. One caveat: The slots are not wide enough to accept today's bread size. (Thickness is ok.) I can put the slices in but there is a chance of jamming and it might not turn off if the elevator mechanism can not move up far emough. Most breads bought at regular grocery stores will fit. The whole wheat variety at Sam's Club is wider than normal, and this is the product that I have to be careful about.

I can not vouch for the Sunbeam brand and design today. It has changed. I think it went bankrupt once and the brand may actually be made by a different manufacturer. You'll need to check on this if it is important to you.

That is the one I was talking about. Not sure it is the brand I bought, but he absolutely loves it.

My brother-in-law says Black and Decker changed hands and they no longer make quality products at all. So do avoid Black and Decker.

Target is also supposed to have the egg sandwich toaster, but it was not in their store when I looked. You can get it online at Target.

I was in a similar situation recently. I ordered a 4 slice Sunbeam from Amazon.

Nice toaster, toasts my bread, has easy to use controls.

the only issue is that it's very large compared to my 2 slice, so it takes up lot more precious room in my kitchen cabinet.

Thanks for the responses. I don't eat a lot of toast so I'm going to take my time selecting. One thing that I found out in my searches was that you can't always 'cancel' if your bread is getting too dark. You actually have to unplug instead of just lifting the lever like I always could do. So I definitely will keep that feature in my list of must haves.

I hate to have to buy any type of appliances anymore as they're just not as well made as what I've been used to.

My counter top was looking cluttered with so many appliances. My daughter suggested I throw out my old toaster and use the toaster oven instead. My Euro Pro toaster oven does everything-toast, bake, nroil, keep warm.

Shirley, while I lived in Tahlequah, between 2002 and 2004, I bought a nice bright red Oster toaster.

I still use it, and am still happy with it. I bought it at walmart. There wasn't much of a selections as far as stores go, in Tahlequah. :)
