KitchenAid Stand Mixer GearBox Repair
Comments (2)Steve777: You are wonderfully brave to take apart a mixer gearbox! I am in awe. The only question I have concerns the material of the gearbox case. Is it a steel case, or is it plastic? If it is a plastic case, then the problem could be caused by heating up due to the load, followed by distortion due to softening of the warm case. Several reviewers on another site encountered plastic gearbox cases in the newer mixers. But with a bit of luck, you might have one of the golden-oldies with a steel case. best regards, Peter-A...See MoreKitchenAid Stand Mixers ~ any thoughts on size, etc?
Comments (22)Hubby said the other day that our new kitchen will be complete once it has a stand mixer collecting dust on the countertop (he's hoping for homemade bread and goodies, I'm sure!). And so.....here I am, back on Appliances searching the archives for stand mixer info. If I'm gonna get one, I might as well get the higher wattage one---don't want to get one and then complain about it. Am I reading this thread correctly---that if you have 18" of clearance under your upper cabinets, the Pro 600 WILL fit? I saw the measurements of one, and I couldn't figure out which number is what dimension (I'm sure there's a std. way of writing measurements, but I don't remember it). I thought that the higher number was the height, but it looks like I'm wrong (19.4")??? What color looks best collecting dust (just kidding--I guess I should get a cover for it)? The cinnamon looks nice (I have medium cherry cabs, dark peacock granite, and SW Blonde walls; an accent color in the adjacent room is a clay or browned pumpkin color). Amazon has them for $300. I can get one at Kohl's for $310 after coupon and rebate. Is it better to get one local (but only 3 color choices--black, "nickel", and something else like nickel). Are these good prices? Thanks! Comments (28)I wasnÂt going to post to this thread at first because you asked specifically about Kitchen Aids. However, I think you ought to consider the Cuisinart 5.5 quart. CookÂs Illustrated reviewed high end mixers, and among several other mixers, gave the following rankings: Highly Recommended: Cuisinart 5.5 Quart Stand Mixer $349. Recommended: KitchenAid Professional 600 Stand Mixer $399. Recommended with Reservations: KitchenAid Artisan Stand Mixer $249.99. The Cuisinart has an 800 watt motor, the KA Pro has 575 watts and the Artisan has 325 watts. You can read CookÂs Illustrated reasons for their rankings in the link below. A friend of DD works in a high end kitchen shop. They have several different mixers in use in their demo kitchen where they give classes. He said he prefers the KA Artisan for looks, but for performance he would choose the Cuisinart, hands down. My Cuisinart 5.5 is only a few weeks old, but I am very pleased with it. There are some really good sales going on right now. I paid $275 for mine. Comments (15)I bought an Artisan that failed and KA replaced it with a professional model (5qt) when I talked about the types of breads and pasta we made with it. I now have a 6 qt professional (will easily do 2 loaves) and would agree with markw and with those who say you should plan to keep a KA on the counter to really use and enjoy it. One of the "musts" for my kitchen remodel was a counter to upper cabinet clearance sufficient to allow the KA to be pushed back when not in use. The KA pro makes great bread doughs -- and the power is sufficient to do a couple of wet doughs that beat for 20-30 minutes. We have the pasta attachments, grinder, slicer/shredder (not used -- use the processor) and have considered the ice cream one, but we had just bought a Cuisinart ice cream maker when it came out. I know many people love bread machines, but I've never eaten a bread made in one that I thought was as good as what I could make with my KA or even a bowl and wooden spoon. That has been a while and I can't say if the results are better for those who mix only in them. I do like the control and ability to adjust and learn the feel of the dough with a mixer. If your DH already likes to bake bread (as I did before I had the KA), I think he will appreciate that also. I started having problems with my neck and arms -- sometimes impacting my hands. The mixer has been a good thing for me -- and DH likes it too. I will tell you that the 6 qt pro is louder than the Artisan. That is the one thing I'm not crazy about, but it only bothers me on the few things where it is used more than a few minutes. I've gotten used to it now, but it was really annoying at first. If they are available to you, I would check Sam's or Costco. I've seen good prices there. I would also expect some sales next month as Mother's Day approaches. My current one was bought near Christmas on sale and with a 20% off coupon for a little less than $250 if I recall correctly....See Morecat_mom
