Question 2: Your opinion on hardware size, please

Finally--decided on Quincy hardware from Restoration Hardware. I have various sizes of drawers, from 22 to 40 inches in my kitchen, and RH had the best variety of sizes. I had wanted cup pulls but once I saw them on the drawers, I just couldn't say "those are the ones". So I reshopped.

Now the question is what size pulls on which size drawers. I am doing one pull in the center of each drawer. The big ones will get 8 inch pulls, that's easy. But the smaller drawers, 23 inches and 22 inches are harder to call. It really could go either way, I think. At first, I thought the 8 inch pulls looked too large on the 22-24 inch drawers, and kind of overwhelmed them. but now I'm not so sure...lol...

This was my "scientific" formula: my pulls are approximately 1/3 the length of the drawers. It works for me.

Your hardware is very nice, by the way.

I forgot to say, I used the blue painters tape to tape them up and look at them from a distance to decide. It's hard to do it when you are holding them up yourself or having someone else hold them while you look.

I successfully overwinter new potted roses in a so called root celler once. I dug a deep (about 4 feet) hole. About one foot down I made a small shelf all around it. The hole was 42 inches wide by 88 inches long. The shelf made the hole 48" by 96" at the one foot level. Every two feet across I placed 4' long 2x4s to support the 4x8 2" thick extruded styrofoam which I placed on the four inch shelves as a lid. In late fall I placed my potted roses into the hole. It was deep enough to allow the potted roses to sit upright. If you don't want to dig so deep you can lay the potted roses down. After placing the potted roses in the hole and putting down the 2x4 supports, I placed the sheet of styrofoam on it, then covered the lid with one foot of soil and a big piles of leaves. In late March, I uncovered it and brought up very healthy potted roses that had no dieback. The ground gets cold enough in our area that it keeps the roses dormant and with one foot of soil over it, the roses in the hole did not freeze. Care must be taken to do this as late as possible so the potted bushes are dormant or almost so. They must be dug up early enough so the ground is still cold and the plants have not begun to sprout. Normally there is enough moisture in the ground that the roses stay well hydrated. This is a great way to over winter tender tree roses in our area. It's a lot of work unless you know someone with a power bucket. I only did this one year as the following year I had roses planted in that spot. That's when I began building ever larger poly houses each year, over portions of my back yard and rose beds in which to over winter my potted roses. To the left in the picture the polyhouse covered three rose beds and a small pond. To the right covered with snow was a 4' wide, 2" tall, 40' long styrofoam box covering another bed. One does crazy things in cold climates to winter protect their roses. It's called an obsession. Only want to do the hole thing for a few potted roses, dig a deep enough hole so the potted roses can be upright and end up with one foot of soil over them. Cover the top with boards or a sheet of strong plywood, then place the soil over them. I always hated to bury the pots in soil as I usually damaged them too much when digging them up.

Dormer size - opinions please!

A Cape Cod would not have a porch and the dormers (if any) would be small with close cornices and rakes and no cornice returns. This style is closer to the Tivewater South traditon shown below and in the link to Russell Versaci's site Making the center dormer larger disrupts the formality and simplicity of the traditional precedents. It begins to introduce a Colonial Revival element. The challenge is to design the center dormer so it justifies this disruption and establishes a strong design without it overpowering the house. The wndows appear to be casements which place a large vertical mullion in the center of the openings. I find this unattractive for many reasons and the triple panel in the center dormer is even more unatractive IMHO. I would use single double-hungs in the smaller dormers and a pair in the center dormer (or a very wide double-hung). In any event I would delete the "mutton chop" cornice returns and either use a more traditional type return or no return. Here is a link that might be useful: click on

schnitzel - I have 2 Le Creuster French ovens (3.5 qt and 5.5 qt) They are great. Is Staub, Mario Batelli or whatever as good? Maybe, but I figured these are lifetime pots so I went with what I feel are the best. They do things I couldn't do with the stell pots I have. They cook slow but they also brown. I can cook stovetop or in the oven. I make chicken, lamb, beef, soup, stew, chili even indian corn pudding in them. I have never regretted buying them. If you have TJ Maxx or Tuesday Morning, look there. I do have a dilema though. We are doing an extended family vacation this spring, sharing a house with 8 folks. I never cook for this many people. I WANT to get a larger (9-13 qt) Le Creuset to take with us but I doubt I would generally use this size once we get back. Day to day, it's just the two of us. Any opinions??? Ken

It's been great getting everyone's input! I appreciate it. It seems like there wasn't a clear winner on the all pulls vs pulls/knobs question. I guess I can't go wrong then :) There were a lot of votes for doing glass knobs, though. I am considering the glass knob option. I'll have to get a sample to see it in my space. Would you pair it up with the pulls I chose? Holly-Kay: I took your advice on going 3" up and snapped a couple of pictures. I am kind of leaning towards all pulls unless the glass knobs look awesome. What do you guys think of the placement? Better? The pulls on the drawers: Thanks for the input...it's been really helpful!

Thanks, Beekeeperswife. I sure put in my time agonizing over those silly pulls---but when I saw them I knew they were 'right', and away we went.

1/3 the length of the drawer--that sounds good to me. However, I have 'in-between' sizes of drawers... do you round up or round down? Also, I should have mentioned that the 6 inch pulls are actually almost 7 inches long, and the 8 inch ones nearly 9. The measurement is between the holes, and the front bar actually hangs over a little on either side, adding the extra inch. So do you round up or down on this calculation, and what is "close enough"? I'd assume that a 7 inch pull would look good on a 22 inch drawer. But what about the 23 inch--it's closer to 21 than 27, so I should perhaps go with the 7 inch long bar there, too? I'm just not wanting to screw this up, as these are going to be permanant! Thanks everyone...

Just to throw in 2 cents - I think both look fine, BUT, the smaller look more traditional and the larger more contemporary/modern to me...which look are you going for?

Cangelmd--definately traditional in nature, doing what pllog called a "homage to craftsman". :-) Thanks for that insight.

They're being installed tomorrow so I guess I was just having last minute jitters.

I have a bank of 15" drawers, a bank of 19" drawers and 2 banks of 30" drawers and they all have 7" pulls. I would not be able to deal with different sizes of pulls on everything.

I agree --- large = modern, smaller = traditional. even more traditional is two small on one front.

Based on the style hardware, looks modern to me. Id go with all one size if you can, the biggest one that still looks right on the smallest space.

Ergonomically, it cannot be too big

those pulls are very nice!

just my two cents, also... i think it will make a difference when you have ALL the pulls in place, so keep that in mind.

agree about using blue tape and standing back, from different vantage points/distances, too.

agree that large is more modern looking, small is more traditional.
