They're gone! They're all gone!

My recipes I had saved on the computer were lost in my recent computer problems. Waaaaaaa, booo hoooo, waahhh! *snif*.

Recently, DH decided to make more room on the computer and started dumping things he felt were no longer needed. No, he didn't dump the recipes, but he accidentally dumped something, or something went wrong in the process, and the whole computer system crashed. He worked for days to get things back up, and had to re-load the system, which the computer didn't want him to do, which gave him a headache, and all kinds of complications happened that are too boring to go into. Anyway, he finally got things back up and running.

Fast forward to a day or so ago, and there's a thread I want to contribute a recipe to. I go to look for my recipe file, and can't find it. It's gone! All of the recipes I've cut and pasted and saved from the forums and other sources are gone. All of Ann T.'s cookbooks - gone. Waaaaaaaaaaa!

Anyway, for all of you that have a lot of recipes on your computer, don't be stupid like I was - back them up on a separate disk or something where they'll be safe. At least I'd printed out a lot of the recipes I had on the computer. Having them handy on the computer made it a lot easier if I wanted to share on a thread. Well, now I get to start all over again.

It sure makes me appreciate all the contributions you all have made, and all the recipes you've provided.

I had the same happend to me too!

I have some of the recipes printed out, and all of the recipes are on two external hard drives (just in case I lose them on one LOL)

Sally, that's terrible! I'm sorry you lost all of those recipes!

I will definitely back my recipe files up, thanks for the reminder!

I have e-mailed you the CF Salad, Chocolate and Soup cookbooks. Hope that helps.

I am so sorry. I know the heartbreak firsthand. I grow hundreds of roses in addition to lilies and daylilies (perennials as well) and because I live in a wooded, rural area the deer are always in my gardens. For YEARS I endured the heartbreak of my beautiful flowers getting wiped out. In desperation I bought some motion-sensor deer repellents that spray water when they detect movement. I had to buy several (and they're about $60 each) but they have kept the deer away 100% for two years straight. They are fed water through your garden hose hookup and when a deer walks in its path the sensor will detect their movement, spray water quite a long distance and it makes a machine gun like sound as it spins and sprays which scares the daylights out of the deer. It also works on keeping the unwanted door-to-door solicitors away, too...haha. We have too much land and too many gardens to install fencing and other methods weren't working. You can shut them off when you want. Each one will spray in different directions for quite a distance. Just last night when I was driving down our road there were 2 deer in my neighbor's yard eating up HIS plants. When I woke up this morning all my plants were untouched, even though there are hundreds of roses in full bloom and daylilies and lilies covered in buds. I am truly sorry about your problems with deer. It is immensely frustrating and depressing, and some people give up gardening altogether because of it. Even though these deer alarms are a bit costly, they have been worth it to me since I have invested so much already in my flowers and what good is my investment if I never get to see them bloom? I came home the other day and my young Sum and Substance was laying over. I picked up one of the petioles and it came out of the ground revealing a hole underneath. This is my first year with this problem, but something (likely voles) are tunneling under my hosta and part of my front yard. I went to Home Depot and got some mole poison, the peanut flavored kind, and put some in the hole. The good news is I have been able to save the Sum and Substance, but it has been set back a couple of years. I have in total about 9 hostas attacked by voles. My new hostas this year have been put in pots for protection, and sunk into the ground.

I've got snap peas! It will be awhile for the snow and shell peas. There won't be many of those. I've got the longest pea trellis ever, over a 4' bed. It's 40', but there is only one. Building 3+ trellises each year may be only history. I like peas! Pulled another Viking Purple potato plant yesterday and had creamed snap peas and new potatoes for dinner! (I've just finished the left-overs for lunch. :o) I better leave the potatoes alone for 3 weeks, at least. Those 2 plants didn't have quite 3# of spuds between 'em. If I'm gonna get 1#/square foot - they are gonna have to do better than that. Bok choy seed can go in that potato bed this month, as soon as the spuds are harvested. Oooorr I can plant more snow pea seed in that bed, Cat'. Yep, that last, very hot week of July, should give me pea pods and vine tendrils about the first of October. Steve who just might have a zucchini, soon.

Sally, I had the same thing happen last year so I know exactly how you feel. I had some of my favorites printed out, but not all of them. It is such a loss. People here are very good about posting them again if you need one anytime.

I'm so sorry. I've often considered uploading my recipes or other important stuff onto someplace like gmail so they are stored remotely.

Oh darn. That's too bad. Another lesson to me to back things up. I recently had to have my computer repaired and while it was in the computer hospital all I could think was "what of they can't fix it and everything is gone???" Glad that didn't happen.

When my last computer was in its death throes I emailed all my important documents to myself so I would have them.

I had the same thing happen a couple of years ago. I've mananged to get most of them back just haning out here. Just ask, you know this great group will post them for you again.

Sorry this had to happen to you, it's not any fun that's for sure.

Bummer, Sally! I email my MasterCook files to my Gmail account, Jessy. Works great. Google Docs is handy for text files, too.

Sally, I keep a bunch of recipes, then burn them to disk. I don't know if they are the same ones you kept, though.

If you have any you specifically want, I'm sure almost everyone here would be glad to post them for you again.

Sorry about the computer. mine crashed and, although I had the recipes saved to disk I had overlooked my file of forum member addresses and telephone numbers. Just like that, all lost. Sigh.

One trick I do is save the files on my webmail account. I have Earthlink, so I sent an attached file of my recipes to my e-mail account and keep them there in their own folder.

So, I know no matter what happens, I always have a copy somewhere out there on the internet that I can access anywhere, anytime. All I have to do is access my email! You can do this with any webmail account, Yahoo, Earthlink, Roadrunner, etc. And Yahoo is free!

Oh, and I also keep copies on disk, at work, and on 2 different computers! I'm paranoid!

I'm so sorry that happened to you.

I have everything backed up to two different external hard drives. I have burned disks and I have my old computer with duplicates too. Plus, I have printed out all of my recipes and have copies in NY and CT. Not only recipes, but I have 15,000 photos backed up. I'd be nuts if I lost them.

I know that Mac offers a website storage. I'm going to look into that too.

AnnT, I'd be so indebted to you if I could get another copy of your cookbooks.

I don't want any of you to tie up your computer or go to a lot of time and trouble.

I forgot that I've saved several recipes on that feature "My Clippings" so I'm good for some stuff. I think I have Ann's scone recipe there. I'll have to go look.

Thanks again for everyone's kindness! It looks like I'll end up with even more wonderful recipes.

I have many recipes saved online in a recipe site, thousands of others are printed and files.

Just ask if you need something. Someone here will have it.
