Officially confused - which front load washer and dryer to get?

Started out looking at the Whirlpool Duet Sport and quickly realized not to get that pair (thanks to this forum). Then after more reading and a check on Consumer Reports, I narrowed in on the LG (5977 Dryer and either 1814 or 2277 washer). I should have just stopped my research there! :) Now I'm reading all about the horrible LG service problems. Sigh. What to do?

Here's what we're looking for:

Front loading washer and electric dryer

Able to spend about $1700- $2000 total

Thanks in advance for any insight and/or definitive recommendations.

How did you narrow your seaarch down to the WP Duet Sport or the LG? What specific features are you looking for?

There should be many w/d sets that meet your criterea pricewise.Why didn't you consider the WP Duet HT (9400)or the Bosch Nexxt 500? They should all be available for less than $2000 right now. These washers performed good in the CR test.

I purchased a top of the line Siemens set for $1,200 on ebay. Bosch and Siemens are twins built in New Bern NC.

I have had the set for over six months and continue to love it.

I did not need pedestals because the door style on these is quite easy to load/unload.

I particularly like the profile wash, soak & delay start features.

Whichever manufacturer you choose, be sure to buy a model with a heater!

Once upon a time, I was the world's biggest booster of Consumers Union, the publisher of Consumer Reports. I have soured on them in recent years because, more and more, they attempt to make spectacular splashy stories that will make the evening news (for those of us of a certain age who still watch the evening news; the younger generation has abandoned it). Whether or not the stories have any real validity. One such story was about the detrimental effects of silver ions on the operation of the bacteria in sewage treatment plants and silver's (dark hint, dark hint) "unknown health effects" on human beings. The target of the reports was Samsung's SilverCare, which Samsung, to avoid the very, very strong backlash that the Consumer Reports articles created, renamed ActiveFresh, then dropped altogether. Bloggers were posting articles with headlines like, "Is my washer trying to kill me?" and the like. One cannot blame Samsung for dropping the feature: the Consumer Reports articles were disastrous to sales. Never mind that the total silver per washload from the Samsung innovation was about the same as the amount of silver that you would get in the wash water if you left a pre-1975 quarter in the pocket of a pair of pants that you were washing. Never mind that you will get more silver in your system -- directly into your digestive system, no less -- by eating off of sterling flatware than ever you would get into your system by washing your clothes in a Samsung washing machine. Never mind that when you wash the sterling flatware, whether in a dishwasher or by hand, more silver ions will end up in the sewage treatment plant than would gut there from a dozen washloads run through a Samsung washing machine. Silverware -- knives, forks, and spoons -- has been in widespread use for centuries, and, so far as I know, no one yet has proposed banning it for its adverse health effects. But did Consumer Reports address those historical facts? The subscription rates went up; that's all that mattered. Consumer Reports had its triumph; subscriptions went up; the world gained one more false Urban Legend. Consumer Reports "won" the round.

We purchased a Samsung '419 two years ago, and have been happy with it so far. The tipping point in our choice of the Samsung was the "diamond" drum (a patent-avoiding copy of the Miele "honeycomb" drum) that minimizes the pull-through of fabric tufts of clothing in the drainage holes during the high-speed spin operation. Only Miele and Samsung have a like feature. From the get-go, we have had an inexpensive surge-spike protector (ours is a Tripp-Lite Spike Cube) on the outlet where the Samsung plugs into the mains circuit. The few complaints you may read about Samsungs tend to relate to circuit board failures -- which could reflect a power supply not robust enough to deal with "dirty" electrical power; surge/spike protection is cheap insurance against damage to the circuit board.

Things to think about before selecting a machine... how 'available' is service locally??? If you're talking with a 'big box' store... ask what town the service will come out of for the BRAND you are buying... you may have to calll the customer service number for the manufacturer to figure out where the closest wuthorized service is... do you want a 'heater' which will insure you 'hot' wash is really hot, or to enable a "profile' wash... starts out cold and then heats up tto the desired temp... supposedly the 'best' way to get your clothes really clean... do you want the sanitizing function (towels, underwear, diapers, socks, gym clothes... that type of thing... but alll must be able to handle HOT water... hotter than typical hot wash Steam... supposedly this helps with wrinkles... (personally I haven't figured out if those with this option here realy use it or like it yet)... all will use less wter, spin faster, and leave your clothes drier when they come out of the wash... all will require you to use HE detergent, preferably powder... and preferably to leave the door ajar when not in use to help with mold/smell issues... then... the flooring question, which your answer solves many problems people have... concrete seems to be the 'perfect' answer for the 'vibration' caused by the high spinning... again this is a very construction dependent problem... I personally have no problems with my fl on the second floor of my house... others here have had major problems with vibration... then... go look at them... looks are very different... are ou swayed by the colors... since they are in your basement, maybe not??? each machine out there looks a little different from the other... open the doors, spin the drums around, open and close the soap compartment a few times... what do you like the 'feel' of??? persoanlly I think the dryers are a non issue... and you may or may not even want to get a matching dryer... the more 'normal' looking dryers are MUCH cheaper and just as functional.... decide what you want for features... then go touch and feel models that fit those features... remember whirlpool makes a lot of the 'typical' brands (sears, maytag, kitchen aid... and I believe others)... so there you're buying by different features on different machines... whatever you decide, go online before they install and get a copy of the instructions and print them and make sure they follow them... get your shipping bolts from the installers and any other 'tools' that you should receive from them... and make sure they level the thing properly... and tighten the legs... good luck

Yes, it does have an internal heater. Per the manual if your house hot water heater isn't set to 120 degrees or higher or if the washer is far from the water heater, a load can take up to 30 minutes longer. (I always run water in a nearby sink until it is hot to ensure that the washer gets hot water quickly.) You cannot use hot water on every cycle. You can pull up a copy of the manual on the web and there is a chart showing what the cycle and temp choices are. The manual does not mention profile washes, it could be that the water heater is there strictly to create steam during the steam cycle washes which are about a half hour longer than the regular washes. I am sure that if you asked Electrolux via email they would answer any questions you have. If you have an unusually long dryer vent, I would look into the matching Electrolux Dryer, The reviews of the dryer are quite nice.

Reading this forum last November convinced me TO get the Duet Sport (well, I got the Kenmore version of the Duet Sport). Not sure what threads on here convinced you otherwise, but I like these machines a lot. Our's are in a 2nd floor closet in a 100-year old house. Absolute zero vibration.

I personaly recomend getting the Bosch nexxt 500.
I have had mine now for a bout 2 months and look forward to doing laundry!!
It gets the clothes so clean, and I really do not have that much vibration .
Bottom line love it !!

Like dmlove, this forum also convinced me to get the Duet Sport (er, longtime lurker, first-time commenter?). However, we haven't made our purchase yet, and in fact now can't find the Duet Sport 8500 locally at any Best Buy or Lowes stores. I looked online at the Best Buy website and it says that the 8500 is unavailable for the entire states of NC, SC, and VA.

I've seen a Duet Sport 84XX model at costco but it does not appear to have the heater. What's going on with the Duet Sport 8500? Is it being phased out?

The Duet Sport HT (the model with the thermal heater) is currently being phased out, probably because Whirlpool changed the Duet to include the thermal heater on both models--the lower of the two costing roughly $1100 just $100 more than the Sport HT cost. If you don't want the extra size, you could break for the Kenmore HE2t, it's the same thing as the Sport HT with a stain treat option and a better suspension. Or if you want to only spend $1000 on a washer and want to step up to 3.8 cubic feet, you could check out the Maytag Epic--you'll also get better sound insulation, a shoter normal wash time, a porcelin top, and a dryer with zinc coated sides that should never rust (only a problem if you keep your dryer in a damp basement). Also, you'll lose the annoying chrome painted accents that scratch and look hideous.

That's good to know (I'm not going crazy!), though a little disappointing. It seemed like the 8500 was priced between $799 and $899 prior to them disappearing, while the 9200 appears to be listed at $1200 and the HE2T at $1050. Not to mention that, provided Energy Star can be believed, the Sport 8500 had better water and energy efficiency than all the others mentioned. I guess I can wait a little bit longer to see how people respond to the Maytag Epic, or else I'll be spending more on the larger 9200/9400 Duet.
