Cool Bri!!! First time I've met other hams here on the forum. Yes we both have our extra class licences, but haven't touched the equipment for a long while. I spent over a year working with my EC8 novice licence when we were restricted to using morse code only....no voice and on very small portions of the radio bands.....40 and 80 meters, and a small corner of 15 meters. I used to use an inverted vee antenna strung across our back garden and go though the night transmitting with an old straight key to Russians and Yugoslavians until the sun was coming up, using my Sommerkamp FT One rig, often QRP with very low power. The filtering on that equipment was awesome . It was such a challenge though as those Russians and Yugoslavs were working in very fast morse. The Italian hams also were fast and powerful. We also had a big three element beam with rotor that was great for contacting west coast North America and rest of the world but it blew down in one of our windstorms. And now we just have a small vertical antenna. I graduated to an electronic keyer for morse and had a wonderful time as many people were calling and wanting QSL cards from our EA8 area, which is classed as an African contact. After further exams and more morse tests I obtained my extra license and could them work all over the spectrum, including 20 meters which was always so busy it was intimidating. All exams were of course in Spanish so it was challenging to be studying electronics in that language. Do take morse if you can....it really is great to be able to communicate worldwide and is so exciting to think how far you can go with less power than a small lightbulb. Our station is quiet at the moment and we have to clean up the equipment and do some checking over of cables and contacts as there was so much humidity that there is some corrosion. Our German friend who comes regularly to stay with us keeps his equipment in another room here and works a lot in our station using his German DF3UT callsign in Pactor mode. Wolf is EA8AJS and I am EA8BUO. Small world eh? Sorry to highjack your birthday thread! Congrats to your husband and good luck when you do your upgrade. Welcome, Karen -- and all the other newbies! I'm Sue, a retired medical editor, and I live in Baltimore with my husband of 40 years. My DD lives in Seattle with her partner, and my DS just recently moved out there, too; he's staying temporarily with his sister while he hunts for a new job. From all reports, they're having a great time together. He just wrote me that his sister taught him to make his first pie: a peanut butter/peanut/chocolate chip pie with an oreo cookie crust. It's tough when your children live 3000 miles away, but it's good to know that they're healthy and strong and getting along well together. Now, if someone would just provide me with a grandbaby ...! DH and I now share our home with my cousin, who is a psychiatric patient and can't manage his own affairs. Life has certainly changed for us! We're in the process of packing up and cleaning out his old apartment and moving his stuff to our home in Baltimore. He's diabetic and has a cholesterol/triglycerides problem, so I don't bake any more and read labels carefully to watch for cholesterol, fat, and sugar content. Fortunately, he loves to eat and enjoys my cooking (plain and simple though it is). I find that, because our food dollars have to stretch further these days, I've become more creative with ground turkey, tuna, and other less expensive choices. Although I lurk here more than I post, I've learned a lot from the Cooking Forum, and my repertoire has really expanded. When I was in the Pacific Northwest, a few years ago, I met Terri_pacnw. Great looking meals everyone! David it's nice to see you here too and with that lovely roast dinner. I will also have to try that popcorn cauliflower as that's one veg we both like and that looks so good. Yesterday we were out for sauerbraten with red cabbage which has always been well done at the Austrian restaurant, (old photo from previous time) but I usually have bratkartoffeln rather than their dumpling show in this pic. Today I again made teriyaki chicken strips with stirfried vegetables over basmati rice. Oh how I love that dish! I had two helpings. We sat indoors today as although the sun was out, it was a bit too windy for the terrace. I was downtown twice shopping with the car before dashing home to make lunch. Had the chicken marinating though before I left. I just received my two boxes that I sea mailed to myself from Canada when I was there. They contain my luggage spillover items as well as new books and kitchen gadgets .....such as a new large OXO can opener. This one better work! And the new 25 year edition of The Silver Palate Cookbook thanks to my sister who every year gives me a birthday gift certificate to one of my favourite Victoria bookstores. I will be reading that in bed tonight! I also bought some Hungarian paprika and Old Bay Seasoning which I'm now putting on my spice shelf ....if I find room. Sauerbraten, red cabbage and dumpling Teriyaki chicken with stir fried vegetables & Basmati rice I think tomorrow will be another salmon day for us. Forecast is for rain so I guess we'll be inside for lunch again. SharonCb

The initial Question was " how do you sharpen your knives." I think a lot have posted, to give some helpful and tech.info. Even if you want to keep doing the same way, which you might think is wrong, I would copy some of the info for future, just in case you might want to upgrade your knives. ????? - - - - - - - - - - - - - Has anyone seen the Kitchen Knives at Lowe's. They are made by " Kitchen Aid " and look pretty good. I lost my Paring Knife about a month ago, so while at Lowe's I bought one for $9.95. I liked the Design. There was a nice varity of other knives. Has anyone else seen them. ??? They were back near the Kitchen Cabinets. Here is the Paring Knife. It holds a good edge. I just touch it up with the steel. The blade is 3 1/2 inches long. It fits my hand well.

Thanks for the good wishes everyone! It's been a great day so far and we've still got dinner to come!

My husband and I both took the day off work, slept in and generally lazed the morning away. This afternoon we hit up my favorite cooking store. I had a gift certificate left over and figured I'd be able to couple that with my 20% off birthday coupon to get my first saute pan. So I was looking at the Cuisinart saute pan (because it was in my self imposed price range) and my dear husband wanders over to the Le Creuset section, holds up a saute pan and says "hey, isn't this the same brand as your dutch oven?" There wasn't any discussion after that, he just picked one up and headed toward the counter with it while I wasn't looking. Sneaky little brat! And just the day before he'd come back from the coast with a beautiful myrtlewood cutting board for me. I'm beginning to feel a little (ok a LOT) spoiled. :)

After that we split a slice of pizza, had gelato and went to the home improvement store where we made THREE whole decisions about the kitchen remodel. I would have been thrilled with one decision, but we decided on a sink, a faucet and the cabinet hardware. I don't know what stars aligned in the cosmos, but I'm not complaining. The planning for this renovation has been quite a time-sink, sorry I've not been around this forum more. Thanks for remembering me!!

Thought you'd want to see the cutting board dh found for me. He looked at the "regular/boring" square butcherblock ones, but thought I might like this one with curved sides, end grain and brick mold layout more. He's so cute! :)
