It's funny you should bring that up, because I made one a few weeks ago. We called it a Cockeyed Cake. I found my mother's recipe in my old box, and made it for my daughter and her family.

My recipe called for mixing it right in the cake pan, but I did it the way your recipe says. And I cut the sugar in half (like I always do).

Back in the early 70's I got that recipe but it was called a crazy cake. Mine makes a larger cake though. This is Bobby's favorite cake that I make for his birthday.

I too knew it as Wacky Cake, but in Mom's recipe book it was the No Fail Chocolate Cake. I learned to make brownies from that recipe - and boy were they ever good!

I make it right in the cake pan too! I use a 13 x 9 for my recipe. Its a great recipe for kids to make!

Yep wacky Cake made it in the 50's!!

I have made this for a good many years. I bake mine in a sheet cake pan, so it's thin and moist. I sometimes make a cream cheese/powdered sugar frosting, roll it up and make a 'log' cake - oh, SO GOOD!

I remember this too! My recipe called for mixing it right in the pan. My neighbor, who gave me the recipe, called it "Whacky" cake. That was in Miami in the 50s. Neighbor also introduced us to chicken and yellow rice. We used powdered saffron which we got from Cuban stores. That was beyond delicious. Nice memories, Glenda.

Did y'all ever make that salad w/ Coke and bing cherries? Then there was the cake w/ 7 up? It's funny how recipes kinda go around. Was the 7 up cake the "Sock it to me" cake? I can't remember. And then there was the one made w/ ground up vanilla wafers. Do y'all remember that one? That was soooo good.

I've made sauerkraut cake and also tomato soup cake.

Vanilla Wafer Cake

Cook Time: 1 hour
Total Time: 1 hour

Ingredients:
�2 sticks butter, 8 ounces
�2 cups sugar
�2 cups chopped pecans
�5 eggs
�1 can coconut flakes, (3 1/2-oz)
�12 ounces vanilla wafer cookies, crushed
�1/2 cup sweet milk, (whole milk)
Preparation:
Cream butter and sugar. Add eggs one at a time. Add half of wafers crushed fine. Add coconut, nuts, milk, and balance of wafers. Spoon into a greased and floured tube cake pan. Bake at 325� for 1 hour. Leave in pan 10 minutes to cool; turn out onto plate.

I have never heard of any of these cakes, But they sure sound good. I am going to try the wacky cake recipe. I will probably put a frosting on it. And about the cake that glenda al mentioned; that has got to be an awesome tasting cake. LOL. Had to laugh when I read the name of it!! Oh, my! rofl

I make it a lot...when I know the kids are stopping by and I don't have a cake mix. I frost it with the Microwave fudge frosting. They love it.

The wacky cake is much like the eggless chocolate cake that I make quite often.
Eggless Chocolate Cake
1/2 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup granulated sugar
3 Tbsp cocoa powder
1 tsp baking soda
1 tsp vanilla
1 Tbsp white vinegar
6 Tbsp vegetable oil
1 cup water
1/2 tsp salt
Cocoa Frosting
Preheat oven to 350 degrees
Grease a 9" square pan with vegetable spray.
Combine all dry ingredients in a mixing bowl.Then add vanilla,vinegar,oil and water.Hand mix well.Pour batter into the prepared pan and bake for 30 minutes.
FROSTING:
1/2 cup butter
2 cup granulated sugar
3 Tbsp cocoa powder 1/2 cup milk
While the cake is baking,cream the margarine or butter, sugar and cocoa powder in a sauce pan.Add milk and bring to a rolling boil for one minute.Remove from heat and immediately beat the mixture,in the sauce pan,with an electric mixer until it begins to thicken to a yogurt-like consistency.
Once the cake is done,immediately pour the hot frosting over the hot cake.Let cool.
How about the Mayonaise Cake? My aunt use to make these and they were delicious.Really moist.

Chocolate mayonaise Cake
2 cups flour
1/2 cup cocoa
1 1/2 teaspoons baking soda
1/4 teaspoon salt
1 cup sugar
3/4 cup mayonnaise
1 cup water
1 teaspoon vanilla
Sift together the flour, cocoa, soda and salt. Cream together the sugar, mayonnaise, water and vanilla. Add dry ingredients to the creamed mixture; stir until well blended. Pour batter into greased and floured layer cake pans (or a 9- x 13-inch pan). Bake at 350�F. for about 25 minutes.
Frost with your favorite chocolate frosting.

My wack cake is cooling now.

I didn't add 2 tsp vanilla, didn't sound right.

Checked other similar recipes and none said 2, so I didn't.

I made the Wacky cake today and although it is good, it is way to sweet.

Found mine it is almost like everone else's
Wacky Cake
Use an UNGREASED 9"x13"x2" pan
Into it sift the following mixture ( dump everything in the sifter )
1 cup sugar
1 1/2 cups flour
1/2 teaspoon salt
1/4 cup cocoa
1 teaspoon baking soda
Then add
1 tablespoon vinegar
1 teaspoon vanilla
1/2 cup salad oil
1 cup water

Stir this mixture around in the pan until there are no lumps.
then bake for 30-35 minutes in a 350 oven.

We used to make these on card playing evenings back in the 50�s and 60�s before anyone worried about using too much oil etc.

I remember Wacky Cake well. Glenda, perhaps try it with the vingegar next time; that's one of the "wacky" things about it and it's good.

The Wacky Cake recipe is much older than the Better Than Sex Cake recipe, and I think the "cake" part of the latter is a misnomer. Doesn't matter, though - it's wonderful!

I DID put the vinegar in. This is the recipe I used except I didn't use the 2 tsp of vanilla, just one.

Mine turned out perfect in an 8 inch square pan.

Wacky Cake

1 1/2 cups flour
3 tablespoons Dutch process cocoa powder
1/2 teaspoon salt
1 cup sugar
1 teaspoon baking soda
2 teaspoons vanilla
1 teaspoon white vinegar
6 tablespoons vegetable oil
1 cup cold water
Directions
Preheat 350 degrees F.

Oh, sorry Glenda. I don't know why I read "vanilla" as "vinegar".

That wacky cake sure was popular. I think we all made it back then. It made for a quick dessert.

Tigerlil, mayonnaise cake is a favorite at our house. That's the only cake my daughter ever wanted on her birthday! Think I'll make one tomorrow. I like it with caramel icing. Thanks, I'd forgotten about it!

DS stayed at the hunting club all weekend, and didn't come for lunch.

Everything is frozen that can be frozen EXCEPT that cake.

Took it to sick friend so she and her DH can enjoy.

So what is wacky about the wacky cake? A friend made a pineapple upside down cake recently and it was great. Oldies but goodies, yum.

Happylady-I think the "wacky" part is the way it is mixed.The "original" Wacky Cake recipe calls for it to be mixed in the pan you are baking it in.Dry ingredients go in first,then little holes made in that for the other ingredients.Kinda wacky,huh?

Tigerlil, you may want to check the recipe you posted for Eggless Chocolate Cake. I think the flour amount is way off. I just made it. Look what I got!

Thanks, though, for the mayo cake recipe! I requested it every birthday when I was a child. Mom lost the recipe years ago, and I forgot about it until just now.

There are may versions of the Better Than Sex Cake.This recipe was given to me by an aunt. I made it once many years ago to take to work. It was a hit.

1 (18.5 oz) yellow cake mix
1 (1 lb 4 oz) can crushed pineapple
1 C sugar
1 ( oz) pkg vanilla pudding mix (not instant)
1 C whipping cream, whipped & sweetened
flake coconut, lightly toasted

Prepare cake mix according to directions on pkg. Pour into 13 x 9 pan and bake as directed. Cool. Combine pineapple & sugar & bring to a boil. Cool slightly. Poke holes into cooled cake with a fork. Pour pineapple mixture over the cake. Prepare pudding mix according to directions. Cool. Spread over pineapple & chill.
Just before serving, cover with whipped cream & sprinkle with coconut.
