Did those of you who wanted certain things for Christmas get them?

Jen, guess what I got? The Laura Ashley shower curtain like your's that I requested and completely forgot about. I can't wait to hang it up, since our bathrooms are the same color.

Oh, I'm so glad you got the shower curtain! I absolutely love mine and think it's perfect in my bathroom. You may recall that I bought another shower curtain from an eBay seller around the same time that I'd ordered the L.A. curtain, and I can't even bring myself to hang the other curtain now. (Will probably just re-sell at some point.) You'll have to post a pic when you get yours hung!

I did! My biggest wish was to get a Skype call from DS, who's been serving in Afghanistan (again) since September . . . and I did . . . twice! He got through on Christmas Eve and it was beyond words to see his face while we talked. He called again last night, Christmas Night, as we were finishing our big dinner. We put my laptop at the end of our long table so that he could see and chat with everyone. It was early morning there, early evening here in New Mexico. It was priceless.

It's so long ago, it's probably an amalgamation of all my California memories. Anyway... I was 6 and it was going to be my sister's 2nd birthday. At that time, we lived in Montery, CA. We were going back to Tennessee to visit mom's family. Before we left, we'd gone north to cut our own tree at the foothills of the Sierra Nevada range. As we drove up the rocky coast, we passed fields and fields of crops, orchards, vineyards. Stopping for lunch, likely Phil's fishmarket (as I remember the Mosslanding Power Plant stacks), in Mosslanding that had three inch thick crab sandwiches served, oddly enough, on white bread. Which, at that point, I only liked white bread (too bad, since I lived in the best sourdough country there is), which made it perfectly delicious! We got french fried artichoke hearts for the road and nibbled on them on all the way to the tree place. I don't remember picking it out or how it traveled back home, but I do remember watching in awe as they shot it down the that puts a net around it (now, I know it is a tree baler). That was totally righteous dude! Mom always liked to use those big tree lights, all different colors and we'd sit on the couch with all the lights off, Christmas music (Ray Coniff singers, Johnny Mathis) playing, the fire crackling, every night. I was sad to leave it all behind, but we were getting on a plane and it was only the second time I could remember doing it. The blue lights of the landing runway in Nashville were like a Christmas tree on the ground, and I felt like there was a red carpet being laid out for us. Gran and Stan had a funny Christmas tree. Mom called it the . It was white with only red ornaments. I liked it too. Susie got a doll as tall as she was! And we lost a shoe before we went back home. GranMrs made us all our bell ornaments. There were knitted and jingle bell in the middle. I don't remember too much about the presents, but I do remember that it was my first time to ever see real snow. Before, I'd only live in Maryland when I was a baby, but then Hawaii and California. I hated that Mark threw snowballs at my head, but other than that it was enjoyable. I remember the dark night and the lights on the Bay water as we drove home after touching down. When we arrived, daddy, who was overseas, had sent us a huge box wrapped in brown paper and the packages inside were so neatly wrapped in newspaper. I couldn't tell you for a million dollars what was in those packages, but that it was there waiting on us, Christmas was longer than I'd expected it, and it felt like a comfy hug over the miles.

A little late to the party here, but I love all the memories this post is bringing to mind. Like the first year hubby and I were married, living in a little apartment - waited until the very last moment to get a tree and snapped up a bargain for $5.00! Haul it home and it was so huge it filled our dining room. (We didn't have any dining room furniture so not a problem.) As much as we love the smell of a real tree, here in the Seattle area it seemed we always ended up buying our tree on a rainy day, so we and the tree would be a mess by the time we got home. Now I have a 5' fake tree I bought a few years ago for $20 at Target - I tuck it into the corner of our very cozy family room and it sits on top of a overturned, large, square fiberglass garden planter. Makes it look like a full sized tree without taking up all the room. (I decorate my tree with cheap, vintage chandelier crystals - it's wonderful how the branches on the fake tree can hold the weight of my "ornaments".) Fortunately I have enough room in our garage to simply store the whole tree, still fully assembled - I cover it with one of those plastic tree disposal bags to keep the dust off. By the way, I have to share a trick I learned from a local garden shop that has the most incredibly decorated (fake) trees every year. You know those amazingly realistic fir and pine branches you can find at crafts shops this time of year? Make the cheap fake tree look fabulous by tucking a bunch of these into your fake tree - I just lay them atop each branch of my tree. Really makes the tree look full and almost real! (I've had friends question me if it's real or fake.) Merry Christmas everyone! :-)

This has never been a problem for us. Last year was the first year we had ANY outdoor decorations. I never understand how people have time for that sort of thing Â No kids? No jobs? No kids and no job? Kind grandparents to watch the kids? Lots of money to pay someone else to do it? Last year we (I) bought wreaths to hang on the windows and a few strands of lights for the front walkway. Taking the decorations down in a timely manner wasnÂt a problem. One by one all the wreaths fell off. By Christmas Day, I think we had ONE left. (Of course that one had to be pried off!) Apparently the command hooks that I bought werenÂt strong enough for the wreaths. IÂll have to regroup this year. Taking down the strands of lights took a little more effort, mainly because while removing the lights I found BAGWORMS on my weeping Japanese maple! So after removing the lights, I stood out in the cold with a pair of hand pruners and a plastic bag and meticulously snipped every last blankety-blank bagworm off my tree! I hope no-one throws stale candy canes at me, because I'm sure I didn't take down the globe lights until mid-January. We put up the decorations when we can, and we take them down when we can. Sometimes they are never put up. (We've had at least one Christmas with no tree.) Sometimes they are slow to come down. (One year my tree stayed up until March hence the reason I didn't put it back up the next year. I managed to put the tree UP during my maternity leave then couldn't figure out how to get it DOWN while working full-time with a newborn.) We have no set schedule or rules. We usually travel to be with family on Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Years. Spending time with family trumps decorating (or undecorating) any day. Nin

I will be 94 this coming Wednesday and remainl a nut about Christmas decorations (have a Santa collection too). I made 30 some putz houses, churches, dog houses, etc. each displayed with a light, cords hidden under lots and lots of snow, trees everywhere, and am constantly searching for miniatures that would go with the scene. Some posters mentioned disposal of their collections, and I would definitely be interested in purchasing from those people if they are interested in selling. Thanks for all your kind words. I definitely didn't mean to hijack Oakley's thread, though. The material gifts people have gotten are fun and interesting to hear about and I sure don't mean to imply that my own gift is more important. It was just the best gift I got this Christmas, as I'm sure anyone here who has or had a loved one serving in a combat zone in wartime can understand.
So please, let's hear about the gift gifts, too.

Lynn, my son is also serving in Afghanistan, so I know how you feel! I was fortunate in that I got to see my daughter, her 10 month old twins and the 4 year old grandson for 2 days before Christmas and Christmas Eve, and then we traveled to Charleston to see the other grands at my son's house on Christmas Day. My Christmas was "nearly" complete, lacking only one thing - talking to my son. Fortunately, he called on Christmas day, and although we didn't have Skype, I got everything I wanted, talking to him was absolutely wonderful!!

Lynn, no problem! That would be my favorite gift too! Just being with and/or taliking to family is the best gift ever. Then the presents. Then the food.

Lynn - I think I responded to you on another post! Sorry!!

My hubby is a great gifter. I really have to be careful not to say things I like or might want, because he will buy anything and everything! LOL We don't really go big on gifts for Christmas, like others here we are fortunate to buy what we want, but we do enjoy exchanging Christmas gifts. He spoils me!

I never ask for gifts, I want to be surprised. This has been a wonderful holiday and we're looking forward to celebrating on through the new year.

My hubby bought me a gorgeous Coach purse, clutch, and wallet! I love them, but couldn't help but think of the great lighting I could have gotten to replace our outdated bathroom lights!

Gosh. Christmas is over? No one told my family. We've been celebrating for days! House full of people every single day since Sunday.

No, Golddust, today was only the "Second Day of Christmas". Those of us in the know have 10 more days of Christmas yet to celebrate ;~D
I love celebrating Christmas this way! It makes all the work before worth it. Not just one day, Christmas Day (& Eve), but then the 12 Days of Christmas that follow.

I've been singing more Christmas Carols this week than I did after Christmas. lol. I think because it's now a time to relax.

I'm taking down all the decorations except the tree, wreath above the TV and the mantel garland. They're all in our sight when watching TV and they really cheer up the room.

I'm going to miss all the colors of Christmas. :(
