Firewood Saga..

Well now... it made us smile today.... When we were coming home from church and turned the corner towards our driveway... lo and behold, but who should we see just pulling out of our driveway with a full load of firewood?? Yep, you guessed it !! LOL And he never even waved as he drove past us..

I called their number and the voice mail picked up .. and all I said was... "You're welcome !! "... Larry nearly fell out when he overheard me...

Guess they must have gotten cold last night.. but funny how t hey waited till we were in church to come get the firewood... We just happened to get out of church about 15 minutes earlier than usual... LOL

Gotta love it !!

My goodness, we needed this. You guys are incredible. Look at all those things you do every day you don't even recognize! Pollying, Painting, vacuuming, caring, choosing, stocking, washing, (stop me) all without losing your sanity for falling over dead. Of exhaustion, I mean, right? Today I went to get a new social security card. Unfortunately they moved without notifying me. The NERVE. So, what's a girl to do? [Gimme a Hell YA!"] Go thrifting. Visited H4H in Riverdale (MD) and the antique/2nd hand/junk store next to it. They also took a break and didn't notify me. The sign said to come back later, but NO, this chick's on a roll! Off to Baltimore (MD) I charged. 2nd Chance, here I come. Oh, my are they putting in new furniture all the time. No Orphan beaded inset cabinets, so I passed on that. I did find some side lights to accompany my other side lights I picked up before. I'm going to make closet doors out of them. Way cool. I also couldn't resist a pair of 30" doors with horizontal grids on their glass. They're gonna need some work, but that's just fine. What am I going to do with them? I have no idea if I tell you I'll have to kill you. Picked up a face frame delivery from [drum roll] Brian and The Cabinet Joint.com. I am SO psyched about this. Beaded inset, of course. Met with a Garden Web Mid-Atlantic Gardening member who is going to lease an acre of my land (A whopping $100 a year for water) to grow ... PEONIES! She is opening a nursery needs a place to grow them. PEONIES! Managed not to spend my Multi-purpose Fred's drywall money. My MBR looks great with all skim coated drywall. I am Hap-peeeee! Now, I'm gonna take a nap. I should mow the lawn, since I never go to it, but it's gonna be there when I decide to hack it down.

We live on an acreage in a housing development way outside of the city. Most of the acreages in the 'hood are wooded. We've had copperheads. Hubby has killed 2. Our area is known to have rattlesnakes too, but thank God, we haven't encountered any. Neighbors have reported seeing Copperheads as well as eliminating them. There are too many children and pets in our neighborhood that could be at risk. When my nephew was only 3 or 4 he was bitten by a pretty large copperhead. It was on the porch and he'd reached down between the flower pots to retrieve a ball. Bit him on the hand, and he spent 4 days in ICU and another week in the hospital. His Dad was there and realized what bit him. Thankfully, the hospital had the antivenom. We do not kill the non-poisonous snakes. I will encourage them with a shovel to move along. I've scooped one up (with the shovel) and carried it off, rather hurriedly. across the road where no one lives. If I have to turn off the water sprinklers after dark, I carry a flashlight & a hoe with me to the hydrant. I will NOT walk across the yard after dark w/out them. For anything. I'm sure there are a gazillion snakes between the house & the hydrant just waiting for me to step on them. LOL

UPDATE - Saga of the 200-Year-Old Oak Tree to Dining Room Table

I love this story and resonate with it. My father had a black walnut tree cut down on our property in rural Ohio in the late 60's and it was eventually milled into rough board feet. My brothers all took posession of that wood over many decades and I finally ended up with some of it myself. My DH is a woodworker by hobby (his father was a carpenter and cabinet maker). DH used the walnut in a newel post for a winding staircase, he used a thick piece of it in a freeform mantel on a fireplace in our dining room and for my 70th birthday he sent some of the walnut to the son of his old college friend and best man at our wedding who has become a bladesmith and I have an amazing handcrafted knife with an "heirloom walnut handle". No photos to show you of anything, I'm low tech sadly, I will see if he can dig some up and send them to me in digital format for me to share here. I think of my father when I see the wood and understand your attachment to the tree.

We have a holly in the front where it faces southwest and it is gigantic. The one in the back facing north is easier to control with pruning, but I still agree with littlebug that a holly will end up being too large for your beds. My experience with hydrangeas is that they can get pretty big, too. I think people need to be able to see more of your yard to give good advice. Since the maintenance seems to be getting you down, I would consider simply eliminating these beds. You may be used to having something there, but does anything really need to be there? Or how about a low lying evergreen in the center with perennials and/or annuals around it if you keep the beds small and round?

Don't hold your breath for any kind of a "thank you". Your neighbors are "strange" people to say the least.

Linners, you have no idea how strange they really are... Last year when Larry was burning off the leaves under the trees around our place..The guy came along and parked next to Larry while Larry was keeping watch on a stump burning.. and was telling Larry about the "Nut" that started the fire and how he came about coming into the area.. (It was dark, around midnight), Of course Larry egged him on for about 15 minutes.. and finally said " By the way, let me introduce myself to you.. My name is Larry and I am the "Nut" that you are referring to.. and it's nice to know where I stand with the neighbors.. "".. Well I about peed my pants when Larry and the hired hand told me about it.. We laugh about that one for some time..

Never a dull moment in this neck o the woods.... ROTFLMBO

What a weirdo......and how rude not to at least thank you for the firewood, let alone not bring a cake or some cookies or something tangible as thanks..........

We don't expect anything in return for the firewood.. but a thank you would have been nice... Our other neighbors all call to say thanks..but not them... We won't bill them.. but might just put up a sign... with a price per pick up load... We will have a lot more cut this year just culling out our woodlot.. a bit at a time..

Yea, I would put up a sign and sell it. Why not? Or put a notice up at your church... give it to people who truly would be blessed with it. Of course the church notice would be for free for pick up. However you wanted to word it.

They are odd and I wouldn't offer anything else to them in the future. You were so sweet to think of them in the first place, knowing they didn't have much and it being so cold. Odd people everywhere.

It is nice to share, but coming on the property without you being home is a NO NO for me. I would wonder what else they might want--But that is me. I would have at least left a note or something. Just be careful

CountrySunshine - I would be so grateful for the firewood I would help you cut, split and stack your own for next year.
I cannot believe some would be so selfish and ungrateful.
Getting your own firewood is crazy hard work, but very satisfying when you are warm.
We will burn close to 6 cord this year...
