Honeywell Programmable Stat Dies After 5 Years

After laying tile all day yesterday outside under the deck, I came into an 83-degree house and found my 5 year-old Honeywell programmable stat with no display. It had gone to thermostat heaven. I thought that it would have lasted more than 5 years but I guess not. I replaced it with another programmable Honeywell from Home Depot for $100. This Model 7500 is missing 2 features that my old one had: no "vacation hold" and no tracking of compressor run time. How can I yell at my wife for the running the a/c, or heat, too much when the stat doesn't track run time? I also don't like the fact that you have to move the temp up or down for the back-lit display to illuminate.

I'm now looking to see if the Honeywell VisionPro can track the run time. It has the "vacation hold" but I'm not sure about tracking the run time. It looks to be about double the price of the 7500.

Why not get a programmable one with a lock out feature so only you can control it. Then if it gets extra cold or extra hot out and the unit runs longer than it did a few days ago, you can yell at yourself?

VisionPro will not track run time hours. One of the best thermostats out there though.

Actually, z1700, I found some of the literature on my thermostat and discovered that it does have an "elective" EMR - ran through the program and sure enough, there it was. It was not enabled, so I did select it - but I have to say I wonder how much better that is than simply setting the thermostat to come on 30 minutes earlier than when I want heat (that seems to be about how long it takes the boiler to kick in to really producing heat)....What about when the temp is set to go down? Does the EMR also begin to drop early, so you'll be at the set temp at the scheduled time, or does it cut off at the scheduled time so the temp gradually reduces? Seems like if the EMR accelerates the drop in temp, I lose some of the benefit of the residual hear in the radiators, no? And spot90, that's a good suggestion to check the amount of gas I've used, rather than the cost, although since one month (or winter) can vary a lot from the next, that, too, has potential issues. Our gas bills do show the average daily temperature for the billing period as well as the same month the prior year, so maybe I can find similar months. It's worth a try, if I still have any of the older bills - it's been 3 years since the boiler was replaced, so I may or may not have those. I'm looking for the wireless t-stat that conforms to a digital picture frame that you can upload your own pictures. You never know it's your thermostat until you want to set the temperature. Believe it or not they are working on something like this. I heard about this concept 2 years ago. I thought it would be out by now but I guess santa needs to get crack-en on his elves.

Whichever one of those is a 1 Heat/1 Cool thermostat (at least) should do the job. You can buy them at stores online. Have you thought of one of the touchscreen thermostats from Honeywell (the VisionPRO's)? They may be harder to setup (we can help) but sure are nice! A backlight may require 24v to your thermostat (there is a common wire along with the R wire to provide this to the thermostat), so you'll have to determine if you have this. Did your own thermostat light up? As always, it is advisable to call a professional to do this for safety and proper installation. You certainly wouldn't want to wire it wrong and possibly break a component in your system--that could be more costly than just having a service company install the thermostat. You may want to just call a small shop to come out and do it for you. Of course, shut off the power to the systems to do this work.

"I almost bought it but I want something with more that 4 on/offs." I'm not sure if more than 4 programming time periods are offerred by any manufacturer. "I want to gradually bring up the temp in my home over a 4 hour period with having the AUX heat on my heat pump become engaged engaged" - This depends on several things: setback temp, outside temp, house construction, heat pump capacity. At 20 degrees outside air, aux heat will be needed to help the heat pump recover from setback. At 40 degrees outside air, no aux should be needed.

Unfortunately you cannot get the Vision Pro fron H.D., only through contractors (you can get the Vision series there). The reason your old one crapped out is more than likey due to the fact that, it too was bought at H.D. H.D. sells junky thermostats, but if you have to get one there, by all means go Honeywell. The Vision only has a 1 year warranty, while the Vision Pro has a five year warranty and your contractors standard labor warranty.

Be careful replacing thermostats, I get alot of business from DIY'ers messing around with control voltage.(also by replacing Big Box stores thermostats incorrectly installed by home owners)

Gary, the VisionPro IAQ has a back door way of tracking runtime by using the filter timer. For example, set the timer to alert at 10 days cumulative runtime. If it takes 20 calendar days to roll over 10 days of runtime, you know your compressor run time was 50%. Not the most elegant solution but it works.

I bought mine (with outside temp sensor) for $170.40 including tax. With the outside sensor, it will run your humidifier with automatic frost protection. It will also run your duhum equipment or routines by hardware control or blower trimming and second stage overcooling. Not sure but I would guess you could make it slow your multispeed blower for dehumidification. It trims my VS blower from 1200 cfm down to 1020 cfm for first stage dehum.

It's dirt simple to install and is a very nice control that works perfectly for me. Seven day programming is so simple there should be law against it.

I make sure that I kill the 24-volt power to the stat before messing with it. I know that if I spark the wires I can blow the fuse in the control circuit. When I replaced the dead Honeywell with the new 7500 Honeywell, I did not fully program the 7500 first because it was 83 degrees in the house and I wanted quick cooling. As a result, the stat showed "cooling" but the heat pump was putting out heat as the default mode is heating.

The 7500 has the same filter indicator and I have it set to 1 month. I thought that it would show the Usage with this but it doesn't. I e-mailed Honeywell and they do not make any t-stat that tracks run time (revenge of the wives).

Als in NH:

I downloaded the Climatouch manual - thank you. I'm not sure that it has "Smart Recovery" mode like the Honeywell which cycles the electric aux heat on/off to meet the recovery set point when heating with the heat pump. It does have some great options if you have 2 stage cooling.
