"Sam" should be joining our family in three-four weeks.

He's Harry's second cousin, BeeGee's great grandson, and looks like trouble! LOL

I have one rule. Harry is first; Harry is best; and don't even think about messin' with Harry.

Wes keeps assuring me they'll be best of friends in no time. (Harry sure didn't like Burma, our German Sheperd summer guest. She was always pinning him to the ground by his head, and holding him there forever...until I intervened in my best mad-wet-hen mode. Harry is not an alpha dog; he'll let mini-Daschunds push him around, and loves every minute of it.

I know dogs are pack and social animals and they're happiest in the company of other dogs. I never would have kept Harry alone if I weren't home with him 24/7. Now I won't feel guilty when I have to run to the grocery store! LOL

Sam was born Thanksgiving Day.

Caroline; Congratulations. What a great looking puppy, and he is pointing already, that is so cute little GSP's pointing. Is he black not brown? Brings back memories of Belle as a puppy, I think they are the cutest puppies..

Yes, Sam, like his great-grandma BeeGee (Harry's other-mother, LOL) is "schwsch."

kaylah, on the pink one nice to see you're still around, remember you well. Yes, I am in Iowa. Yes, yours does definitely resemble mine; I think mine could go to ten feet, appears to be a climber. It's even hard to make a rebar tripod for it because it's spread around funny from suckering. Did you stake yours and does it sucker? roselvr, I did some more work in Photoshop and threw an html page together using a simple style I use often for a template, you can get to it at the useful link, hope it proves useful :-) Let me know if you want to see magnified detail anywhere else. Those are every single photo I took of that rose that day, May 24, 2007, or ever. It may take a bit to load because I have about 11 photos in there, one of which is a fairly large 100% crop but not the whole photo, that would be way too big. It loaded pretty fast for me considering. anntn6b, When it comes to cutting these back, do you know yet if you can count on blooms all along the mature stems next year IF you leave them to mature over summer? No I don't know at all what is likely to happen if I cut it back, may be unhappy with the results. I thought about the two canes hanging over the sidewalk last night and figured maybe I could train them with stakes laterally, would rather not do that and would rather not dodge them getting to the garage, especially in winter when ice back there makes it treacherous. I'm afraid to cut that tallest one down as I have no idea what would happen after, but I'd miss that one the least. I'd be ok with it if it didn't have that naked cane to look at. Do you think I should wait until fall or just let it go for another year? There will be plenty of cuttings from some place left to propagate another one, and I don't know if it is done suckering or not. I would not be surprised if that thing travels underneath the narrow sidewalk and shows up on the other side, going toward the east sun! Thanks all for the input. YouÂve got that right, CatNTree, it is confusing! YouÂre the first one that mentioned it looks like blight. I feel strongly we donÂt have any spider mites as IÂve checked foliage and cannot see any signs of pests. We amended the soil last year only when we created the bed adding Oma-Gro, a couple bags of sheep doo doo and some worm castings. Nothing this year because I felt it was rich enough soil. I did not fertilize when planting and have only used a foliar spray once which consisted of Neptune fish emulsion/seaweed kelp dissolved in water (per package directions) and sprayed onto the foliage. I think it was about an eighth cup emulsion to a gallon of water but would have to check to be sure. Goose Creek has no webbing. None of the plants do in fact I watered them by hand yesterday morning and kept thinking how odd that they look so healthy above the brown dead leaves and I think they may even look a bit improved except for the dead brown stuff because there is such strong green growth from the tops. They are really huge plants, most of them. I also noticed a lot more green balls than IÂd thought had already set on and was pretty happy about that especially since Carolyn told me with these high temps weÂve been having the fruit set doesnÂt happen. That was good info as I didnÂt know it. farkee Â the truckload of Oma-Gro was for this bed only. It was my neighborÂs pickup truck and was a cheaper way of buying it than by the bag which can be expensive. We tilled the soil first as deeply as possible and then added the Oma-Gro to the top few inches and tilled it again. As for drainage I suppose that could be a consideration because this garden sits at the bottom of a hill in my back yard and we didnÂt think about sitting water there after a torrential rain. That hasnÂt happened often but it did for a few days early on because we got pelted. I still think it drains pretty well for its location and generally the soil even with the clay content is crumbly. Everywhere else weÂve planted things the drainage is quite good but I will check on that. We have started to get the dead foliage off and they sure look funny. I also noticed while watering that the stems (stalks?) all look very healthy with no discoloration or spotting so IÂm still stumped. At the risk of sounding like an idiot could this at all be due to not enough water? I mean, if it is not soaking in evenly throughout the bed would the plants look like this if they didn't get enough water?

Aputernut what are the origins of your kings? They are magnificent!! DH and I took a trip to Bronner's this fall. #1 on my bucket list was a visit!! I am sooo embarrassed and feel so STUPID. I was not interested in the video of the history as I knew it and saw much on Youtube, so avoided the "Program room". I did peak in at one point and it was dark as a show was going on...The next day, an hour outside of Frankenmuth I began reading their literature. To my GREAT frustration I discovered in that dark room are cases of 150+ nativities from 50+ different countries!! I have been begging and the Bronner's Facebook page has begun posting pictures of some of them. Unfortunately they do not post as many Creche sets as they do ornaments. But they are not for sale--they are a private collection so I get it. ANYWAY I added a camel and cow to my outdoor set..and I am scouring ebay for a few more shepherds..there are some older characters out there I would love to get my hands on!! We also went to one large spot light. DH is very into cutting our wattage use DOWN. I have a star hanging on the back of the light pole, and we have enough snow to cover the blue extension cord so it is all very nice IMHO

Sam is adorable.

Tell me again what breed of dog Harry and Sam are. I just know I sure do like the look of them, such an intelligent but loving face. Goofy too, but in a very good way!
Harry's expressions can always put a big ole grin on my face.

They're Deutsch Drahthaars, a German breed of versatile hunting dogs.

They do have some GSP, along with several other breeds, in the original 1800s mix. Harry should be furry and bearded like a wire-hair, but since the breed doesn't have a physical standard (they are tested and judged on hunting ability) they can be wire coated, or smooth; black, or brown; marked, or not.

It doesn't look like Sam is going to be bearded, either.

i also think sam is cute but harry is beautiful and looks like he has such a sweet personality. if you want harry to be the dominant dog be sure to introduce them in that way and stress that w/ all your interaction w/ sam.

we have 2 dogs, both girls and only 4 months age difference. we had tracey first, adopted her at 4 mo old and a yr later we adopted sandy who spent alot of her 1st yr at the humane society :-( we wanted tracey to not feel threatened so we brought them home together, took tracey into the house first then i brought in sandy. even thou sandy had growled at tracey when they first met, she settled in well and all has been well for 9+ yrs now. sandy is my baby and i think because i practically smother her w/ attention, she's perfectly fine to be under-dog. they are best friends and look out for each other and comfort each other. once in awhile they have a minor power struggle while playing together but now they are almost 10 it's rare. tracey shows her age much more and sandy could easily over take her (she's an airedale mix and acts like she's 2) but she never does lol.

i'm excited to hear how they do! once we got tracey a buddy (it was really for me to have a dog) she was sooo much happier, even if she had to share our attention. it still tears me up to see them interact like sisters and help & comfort each other, it's amazing :-) good luck ~ liz

caroline i love the "harry adventures" lol why dont you write a childrens book about it? its real and kids would love it! you and harry have a flair and now you would have a sequence with harrys relative. sorry i think it would be adorable.. jmho lol..sorry i adore harry and all animals.

I'm not trying to cause any trouble... but I gotta say....When you stated your rules...my heart just went...Awwww...I felt sorry for the little guy....
I think they should be equal...that's like saying you'd love one of your children more than the other...

But...in knowing how you have loved Harry...I know the little guy will be getting a good home.

PattiCo, you're sweet to "worry" about Sam, but rest assured, he will be well cared for, and not neglected, and never unhappy. Yes; he'll be loved...but he won't ever be my Harry.

Wes got Harry to be "his" hunting dog; and he is. He blew the scores away in his first national field test; he's awesome. But first and foremost; he's "my" dog. For some reason he bonded with me on Day 1.

Drahthaars do tend to be one-person dogs. Now don't get me wrong, Harry LOVES everyone; he doesn't know stanger; and he's all about "play," with everyone. But he's bonded to me; I swear I can hear his thoughts, and he mine. He's always right by my side, no matter what I'm doing...unless Wes puts on boots and grabs a rifle. Then I'm forgotten! LOL

We constantly read, study, and talk dog training/psychology with everyone. We'll train Sam just as we did Harry. He will be taken out everyday...to the post office, the grocery, the feed store, the antique store, the neighbors', the play grounds...for "socialization." Strangers will be asked to give him treats and speak to him. The meter readers will be asked to walk him down the driveway. I'll hang out with him at Cabela's; he'll be loved purple there.

People socialization started at birth with his breeder, and will continue there until we get him at age 12-14 weeks, and will then actively continue for the next year.

Still, Harry will eat first; Harry will be cared for first (as in toenail clipping and ear cleaning); Harry will go out and come in the doors first. Everything will be done to reinforce (in doggie language) the fact that Harry is the top dog. I hope I don't have to step in, as pack leader, to reinforce the fact to Sam. If I do, it will be lightning fast, extremely thorough, and frightenly effective, but not painful.

I'm praying every day that Sam bonds to Wes. I'm going to do my best to be just a bit stand-offish (yeah; right! LOL) to help this along. BeeGee bonded to Wes. She loved me, too, but just as Harry is "my" dog; BeeGee was Wes'.

Wes is driving to Alabama to pick up Sam. I'm hoping three days in the truck, alone together, and the week off Wes is taking to start the puppy training, will be the time Sam needs to hook-up with Wes first.

Wish us luck, folks. Harry and I might have to run off for an extended vacation.

I understand about Harry that is how I am with Eddie...He is first Ivy second.....Charlie is a different breed and totally different size so he is Charlie...but Eddie and I share something special where Ivy likes everyone Eddie is mine first and foremost....Sam is beautiful I can't wait to see pics of Harry and him together...stacy

Sam is precious and he'll be stealing your heart, too. You have room for another one, but I know what you mean, Paisley is my girl and her Daddy was worried about her last week when I was gone, he kept calling me so I could talk to her over the phone, she was pining, he thought. lol No dog will ever replace Paisley, in my heart. There's just no one quite like her!
