Comments (49)I know I'm a latecomer to this thread, but it's a good topic. The house I bought 6 years ago came with a Miele Novotronic DW. At first I was put off by the cutlery rack at the top, and still don't like having to "arrange" all the flatware, but the unit has been very good at washing, and it's pretty quiet. It has a fan that evacuates the steamy air through the door at the end of the cycle, so dishes are fairly dry. I don't think any new model offers this. But the experience I have had with Miele technical service on the phone deserves a special mention. They are quick to pick up, knowledgeable, patient and very polite. They will walk you through your problem and offer the appropriate solutions, most of which you can carry out yourself. Once you've made your first call, you're in their system. Best customer service I've ever encountered! Further, Miele excels in easy-to-fix design. Most owner-serviceable items (and there are several) can be easily removed and replaced - many without any tools. Some require a Philips screwdriver or a pair of pliers. Comments (6)I have to admit that the reason we have the Miele speed oven in the first place is that it matched up so nicely appearance-wise with our coffee system. The pair looked nice together and we knew we wanted the microwave off the counter in the wall somewhere. I really didn't think too much about the other capabilities of the thing. Now that I have had it for a few months I would not willingly go back to a plain microwave. Essentially, it has become the go to oven for small meal preparation. I only turn on the big oven when I have lots of items to bake/roast or when I specifically desire a traditional oven with the heat source underneath the food (pizza is a good example of this, homemade pizza requires hot stones for optimal crust development and higher baking temperatures than the speed oven can maintain.) But other stuff, casseroles, broiled chicken or fish, snacks, anything that fits in the thing goes in the speed oven. It doesn't heat up the house as much and it gets stuff done pretty quickly. And if you really want to see where the speed oven shines, you should try one the next time you bake a pan of brownies. The convection is SO good and the baking so uniform and free of hotspots that you will end up with the nicest pan of brownies you ever made. No burned corners, no black edges, just perfect brownies in 30 minutes (ten minutes less than in a standard oven according to recipe) at 325º in convection bake mode. Comments (90)Kmkane - that's terrible! Can you please provide more information? You had the sink installed 1 day, and so, did the sink spontaneously chip? Could it be that it was chipped during installation (one of the installers dropped a hammer or something), and you didn't noticed it till the next day? Or perhaps, if you gave the sink to your countertop fabricator for templating, it got damaged during that process? There have also been stories of sinks being damaged in shipping by sellers who do not pack the sink well. I am not trying to challenge you, but I just am throwing out possibilities, because you said you didn't use the sink, and after 1 day it chipped. No manufacturer will pay for re-installation, whether it's an appliance, a counter, a faucet, or a sink. Let us know if Blanco is providing you a new sink. I had two Silgranit sinks in two kitchens, totaling about 7 years of use. Never had a chip, and I washed my Lodge cast iron and my Le Creuset in there, and banged them now and then. Comments (51)I know this is an old thread. But I know I read old threads when I am trying to make a decision. We put soapstone and marble and wood floors in our kitchen in 2007. So we are going on 8.5 years and I LOVE IT ALL. My kids have grown up with it. We don't baby any surface. To be clear, my style is not slick and modern. I have antiques and an older home so I like traditional materials and I don't mind a "lived with patina"-but having said that I don't think my stone has much of a patina at all. The big island is soapstone. It has a few scratches-mostly from house-sitters and the kids dragging heavy pots across it or cutting directly on it like a cutting board.. But if I oil it (which I do maybe 2-3 times a year) they fade. I did search for a long time and I picked a soapstone that was know to be harder than others with minimal white veining-so this could make a difference. I think we could have the top polished/honed again and it would look brand new. But I think it looks fine. Maybe in another 8 or 9 years. I love it everyday! The carrara marble is around the sink in the most used food prep area of the kitchen. It is honed. I just had a repair company come out (only because we had to do some other work in the kitchen and hubby asked about it) and they honed it again and cleaned it up. It looks brand new (I didn't think it looked bad before). There are a few little pits and chips that cant be fixed-but I don't think they are that noticeable. I just sealed it after the guy left. It was never really sealed before. I have gotten a few stains and I have always gotten them out. I have had etching but I learned how to get that out myself (I use sandpaper-yes and it has worked beautifully for me). I love it every day! We are about to ignore all practical advice again and put marble in our master bathroom. I hope we have as much luck with it as we did in the kitchen.
