I have a ? Follow-up to 'Proud American' thread

I'm just a kid (giggle) and wasn't around during the Kennedy administration. I was born just a month after the assassination of MLK Jr. But, (I know, grammar guru's :o) I remember my mom telling me about the "feeling" in America during the time of J.F.K.'s election and years in office. That there was a feeling of promise and hope for our future. That people (most people) felt very excited over our new President. He was the youngest ever, the first Catholic, had small children, etc.

My question is for those of you who remember that time in history first hand. Is today like that day? Are the feelings the majority of Americans are feeling similar? Of course with the obvious exception of President Obama's specific historical significance.
