Were you charged a late payment on your cc bill?

When going through the statements recently, dh noticed there was a late charge on a mc bill that I was sure I had paid on time. (Yes, we still mail.) In checking on it, I saw that it took ten days to post! Of course I called and they removed the charge, as well as the interest charge, but I did wonder how many people didn't catch this. The person I spoke to and I agreed that the weather may have held up the mail. So if you still use snail mail too, check those bills carefully.

Also check to see when the statement is cut off and when you receive. It use to be you were allowed 30 days but now some credit cards only allow 10 days. I have called them several times only to hear, well we mail them out as soon as we can, but it is hard to read on the envelope when they were actually mailled out due to the way they pay for the postage. Many don't even have a date.

I read an article on late charge efforts by cc companies to scam card holders by taking too long to post the payment or mailing with little notice before the bill becomes over due. I call when there has been a late charge and have always had it removed. Once I lost the bill and did not remember it had not been paid, but the charge was removed. I would have cancelled the card if it had not been removed. This article, published a few years ago, said that cc companies were especially scamming young card holders.

I haven't looked recently; DH does the basic bill paying. But I was astounded the last time I looked at the bill for the upcountry house, which is a semi-private line (cheapest type available) and was used once, for a local call, in the preceding year. Bill total for one month, including taxes and fees, $26. I told DH that the one local call cost us $300. When we began the service, total cost was $5 per month -- and that isn't very many years ago. OTOH, cell reception is nearly non-existent, nearest neighbor is away more than not, next nearest neighbor is about a mile away. If someone has an accident and we need emergency help, $300 per year is cheap. I have to be honest and say that I resent paying long distance charges as a monthly additional fee. Fair enough to pay line maintenance fees, but ALL calls can use those lines, so why should I pay for something that I personally don't use and which in actuality is not a separate measurable service. I thought of this article when I read your post. Don't know all the details, but it might be worth checking into this RESPA thing. I agree...when they hold YOUR money, it's on their terms when they'll get it back to you, but boy, the SECOND you're late with them, bam...fees up the wazoo. I had a similar situation with my auto loan. I changed insurance companies and the bank hadn't gotten the info (or hadn't applied it) so they put their own insurance on my account. I didn't catch it for a couple of months because I always pay more than the car payment, so I thought the bill was just catching up to my overpayments. Finally when I got a notice that I was actually SHORT on my payments, I called them and found out about this forced insurance. We got it straightened out, and I got them to retract the 'late payment' fees, but it took them almost a year of hounding them to get that money I paid for their duplicate insurance applied to my balance! Don't let that sour your new life that's coming in the next couple of months. Not worth it. Take it as an opportunity to teach your children flexibility. Handle it with grace and they will learn a ton. Bestow the experience with negativity then they will internalize that. words I often need to tell myself, to remind me that they are watching and learning about life and how to handle it, from me. I realize you may just be venting here in a safe space, but a a new home, a new school, and a new life deserves all the excitement and positive energy you've been putting into it. Bureaucracy, it is what it is, and it has its rules.

Nothing wrong with paying by check, but please don't put them in your mailbox with the flag up. Several years ago, I had a tenant whose adult son was stealing mail from neighborhood mailboxes. When she moved and I was cleaning up, under the building I found piles of his crap. Mixed in was a check written by a woman a few streets away, for some sort of subscription renewal. I took it to the police station, and they confirmed with her that she had put it in the outgoing mail. Unfortunately they told me that they couldn't do anything about him, because I didn't have the envelope to go with it. (They knew him for other reasons, and last I heard he was in jail.) This was before fancy cell phones and depost-by-phone, so his options were limited. He could do much worse these days.

We pay bills online and once we got a late fee from Chase. When we checked, it was sent on time, but they said they didn't get it ??? on time ,and wouldn't remove the charge so we dumped them.

Years ago, we did have a late charge only because we had been away but they checked our record and then took it off....
But, my daughter was having problems with her bill not getting to her in time for her to send a payment...We found out later, it took longer (sometimes a week) to get to her street address than it did our PO Box, so she changed her cc address to our PO and had no problems after that....
I have our's taken right out of our checking account but we still get a paper statement and I make sure I check that and also check on line when I get a chance.....
