Heat Pumps and Oil backup

I'm in a similar situation as dave in va (Message of 1 Aug). However, my home is larger (3600 sq ft) and currently has two oil furnaces and two AC units (a 3 ton and a 2.5 ton). It has these double units because a 1000 sq ft addition was added and the old furnace and the 3 ton unit (plus duct space problems) could not handle the addition.

.

My AC units are 10 yrs old and I am considering replacing them with Heat Pumps. I already have a 120 amp electric tankless water heater so I decided to not go with electric resistance backup and therefore will keep the oil furnaces for backup. One contractor said that with the current 2 speed blowers in the oil furnaces (one is a 10 year old Carrier, the other a 2 yr old RUUD) I would NOT get any efficiency better than the 13 SEER of Carrier's Comfort series and that the Performance Series would be a waste of money. A second contractor said that the cooling and heat efficiencies of the Performance series was worth the money.

Which is correct? What is your advice?
