Soapstone in Maryland (or DC area)

Hi all, I'm a long-time lurker, first time poster. I was hoping someone could recommend a soapstone supplier in Maryland (or Northern Virginia) that they have had a good experience with. Also, if you know of any places where we might have luck finding a remnant for a vanity top, that would be so helpful! Thanks!

Can't recommend a soapstone supplier, but for a vanity top, you might try the salvage places. One is Operation Forklift in DC. Also, Habitat for Humanity operates a couple in the area. I've been to Operation Forklift and know they often have decent sized pieces of granite that might work.

I kow Bucks County Soapstone in Pennsylvania travels down there. I used them last year in NJ. They do a beautiful job, using a computerized template system so everything fits perfectly. The week before me, they had traveled to Virginia to do a job. They have a great reputation, so great that even let them pick my slabs for me. I knew I wanted Santa Rita ahead of time. They placed the beautiful caramel veins right where I would have put them myself.

I used Kitchens by Request for my bath. They are up in northern Baltimore County, so I don't know if they'll go as far as Montgomery County (they do projects as far south as Anne Arundel, where I live, and Columbia/Clarksville in Howard). Based on my kitchen remodel experience (which was also top-notch -- I must be very lucky), I would also recommend Stuart Kitchens. They also do baths, and they have a Bethesda location.

Oh, me! Me!!! Out here in Upper Marlboro (yes, they handle as far as Potomac and Richmond, I believe) Granite Grannies has done my marble. They are fantastic to deal with. Not only did they do a lay-away situation with this waitress, but when I reached 1/2, they installed. I paid on the rest for a bit after that. Now we're planning my future soapstone kitchen counter. (Only one; I have butcher block I made on the other side.) Anyway, they're creative and didn't fuss at my oddities (th marble, not me. Perhaps they fussed at me, but I didn't know it.) when I asked for a particular routing, and to install an extra faucet on one sink. They just made it happen. They're female-owned and operated, and even though they're now quite big, you'd never know it by the attention I receive. Love them. Ask Kimi to send you the pics of soapstone she sent Christine. I hope this thread's not too old to add to. I did some investigating today. I've only seen soapstone a few times but have read every thread on here. I visited Designer Surfaces and Grantops in Frederick today. Very interesting! Designer Surfaces had Green Mountain Original on display and gave me a quick quote based on a very rough drawing. I was told they had very little stock but were expecting more very soon. At Grantops, I was shown a few slabs outside that were very green, and flakey /crumbly. It seemed quartz-like to me, with white crystals mixed in? (I am not a geologist!) I was assured that is was soapstone, but it looked extremely different than the display and sample I saw at Designer Surfaces. It was marked (I think) "Savon Pierre" on the side. A google search shows that this may be Canadian, and good for carving? Very strange! I made a quick stop at Home Depot tonight as my son wanted some duct tape. I walked thru the kitchen area and noticed that they are selling this exact same soapstone (same name too). I asked the store associate ( a very, very young man) about it and he told me it was real soapstone, but you couldn't put it in a kitchen because it was extremely porous. He said it was great for bathroom vanities. Bizarre, don't you think? I also called Carapace last week and they said they only had "the green kind that nobody wants". Maybe he too was referring to this "Savon Pierre"?

Alberene soapstone in Virginia was fairly inexpensive when I was pricing out a sink and countertops, not sure if they install. Their quarry is in the blue ridge mountains.

I'm going tomorrow to look at slabs of Green Mountain Original soapstone in the warehouse of Designer Surfaces Unlimited in Frederick, MD. I was put in touch with them by Green Mountain as the closest local distributor. I don't know how many slabs they keep on hand. I can let you know after tomorrow what my impression of them is...

Oh, sorry for not updating sooner...

I went to Designer Services in Frederick. They had two kinds of Green Mountain soapstone -- original and ice flower. I looked mostly at original which was very nice, but not what I had in mind. Many thin veins in what looked to me to be a pretty hard stone.

Today I went to Grantops, also in Frederick, to see what they had. They carry about 5 kinds of soapstone and I bought two slabs!! Mine are Santa Rita (I think I got the last 2 they had in stock) and I love them. I'm attaching a link so you can check out the other varieties.

I'm surprised at how hard its been to find soapstone in the DC metro area. Good luck!!

Arlosmom - you are a great sleuth! Thanks for the leads. Frederick is not too far from me in Northern Virginia. I'm beginning to think about soapstone for when we redo our kitchen. Right now the bathrooms are being redone, and I would like to use it on the counters there.

I'm so glad you found just the soapstone you wanted.
