I turned on the Today Show this morning, something I don't do very often. I'm glad I did. They had a story about Amazon.com and how it was selling a pedophile how-to book called "The Pedophile's Guide to Love and Pleasure: A Child-Lover's Code of Conduct."

Outraged people have been boycotting Amazon, and at the time of the Today Show, they hadn't removed it from their available books, but I just checked todayshow.com and it says they've removed it now. Amazon apparently refused at first, stating that they didn't want to remove the book and that removing it would be censorship.

This is not an urban legend or a chain e-mail. I normally buy quite a bit of stuff from amazon.com, especially at Christmas, but I'll never buy ANYTHING from them again. Just below the headline on the story it says that another book "advocating adult-child sex is still available" at Amazon. I'll attach the Today Show's story here....

CNN did a huge story on this subject yesterday. Too bad I placed an order with Amazon last week. I am not a huge Amazon customer so they won't miss me much.

The real objection I have is that Amazon refuses to sell adult pornography but they will sell books like "The Pedophile's Guide to Love and Pleasure: A Child-Lover's Code of Conduct?" No thanks, Amazon. My money is hard earned and I am a careful spender.

I was outraged when I saw that idiot being interviewed on one of the stations. Some of what he said was, "It doesn't hurt every child...." He then proceeded to elaborate about it being BETTER adult to adult.

Magazines are desperate for subscribers, they use them to justify their ad rates. I'm sure that they've teamed with Amazon to find the right demographics. I received one for Food and Wine from I think it was BB&B if I spent over a certain dollar amount. I don't think I did anything with it. The blizzard of paper in our house with 2 newspapers a day is crazy now. I don't need more! Just be careful that they don't hook you in by giving you a free number of months and if you don't cancel they'll charge your credit card. That awful scam was perpetrated a couple of years ago by Best Buy. You had no idea what the terms were, just that you were receiving the magazines and after a few months a rather high charge appeared on your credit card bill! Do a Google search to be sure! I'm glad I'm not the only one with this sickness for books. A gift card for Amazon...How wonderful that would be!! A trip to Amazon is always dangerous. You find one that sounds good, they point you to other great related ones, and one purchase turns into several... (It is also my favorite way to shop for library books, too, since some are fun to read, but not worth buying.) I just did some major Christmas shopping on Amazon. It took me a couple weeks to add, then narrow down to get everything just right. But I've got a new cart started already.

I've also had great experiences with their customer service, but I've also had that computer (or clueless foreigner in his native country) reading an e-mail and getting it all wrong. A follow up usually fixes it. :) The Call Me works great, as does the chat, though on that one, do anticipate foreign workers who don't really know what you're talking about. My recent issue, however, was when the delivery driver left a big heavy box with my parents' correct packages. It was for a street not that far away but where there's nowhere even a little way away to park, and it was just too big and heavy to go trotting down the sidewalk with if we'd rustled up someone to drive around the block (no possibility of waiting, either). Normal thought would be that they'd send someone to pick up the box and deliver it to the right place. The delivery services just park in the middle of the road and pay the fines as a cost of doing business. Because I didn't have an order number, because it wasn't my box, they said they couldn't do that. Couldn't. So I asked to speak to a supervisor. After waiting half an hour, I was told that the supervisor would call me back. Didn't happen. So I e-mailed. And got another e-mail back asking for the info on the label (i.e., so they could identify the order), then they told me to keep or ditch the box, that they couldn't pick it up because it wasn't my order!! I suppose I shouldn't be surprised, because the cost of restocking is so high that a lot of mass distributors like Amazon give all their returns, or all under a certain price, to jobbers to resell, getting no more than dimes on the dollar. I wasn't so happy with their policy on that, especially because the heavy wrong box was distressing my mother, and it would have been easier to dispose of if they'd come and gotten it. In general, however, their service is very good.

Thank you all for looking and commenting. I admit freely to all that the pairing of Mint Octopus and Fried Green Tomatoes was luck. I did plan Sweet Isabella and Wall of Fire to be side by side but most of my pairings are just luck. Nancy. Heavenly .Unit.ed We Stand started out very ordinary and not at all tall. It was a bit better last year, but this year, it has leaped. Very tall and lots of scapes and buds. I moved Wall of Fire a bit year before last to give it more room and it has had multiple blooms for days now. Debra, you know I love that plant From the first year, Pink Tarantula just suited my taste so well. It has increased and David wanted it so badly I was able to share with him last year. Cocoa's has a very pretty bloom and I actually have it twice today since it is planted near Crystalline Butterfly but I wanted it to be seen. Kate, rain is okay but this is ridiculous. I was able to take photos and they do like the rain, but it has flooded all day after that. I think your stinking rain started earlier than ours did. Olan said water was running over his shoes when he went out today. It looked as if you might get 3 more inches. and California and other western states need it so badly. kay

It was a self-published book. There are companies that will, for a fee, publish anything you write. The technology has advanced to the point where some books that you order from Amazon aren't printed until you order them--then the publisher will print one copy and it gets sent to you. Or you just download the electronic version onto your electronic reader. Amazon has its own self-publishing program, and I suspect that's how this "book" got on to their website.

I doubt Amazon inspects each and every title that is self-published from their site. But I suspect they will have to start doing so soon.

Isn't this just ridiculous. Would they publish a book titled, "How to turn your neighborhood highschool into a profitable drugzone?"

Amazon has always been my first go-to spot for purchases, not just books. I'm really struggling with this. Do I boycott them forever? Is there a way for them to make this right?

I sent Amazon an e-mail expressing my concern/disgust and asked them to speak publicly and make a financial gesture in support of some organization that fights child porn.

The man who wrote the book said he had only sold one book.Wonder who bought it and why they did so? So glad it is off Amazon, there are places to sell things like that and if it is going to be out there, that is were the book needs to be listed, not on a site like Amazon.

I don't get it. How is that ok? I would think he'd be receiving all kinds of nasty letters in the mail. Heard about this last night. Just sick. Glad it's off Amazon.
