That's pretty bad. I'm reminded of the time--years ago--my neighbor showed up at my door with a bag full of leftover Chinese food. She said her husband refused to eat it after it had been reheated four times.

I am the OP and some of you wondered how I handled it. Since the husband is my DH's best friend, I didn't say anything but also didn't eat any.

I probably would have done the same thing. I would have smiled, said thanks... put it in the fridge and disposed of it later.

Did they eat before coming to your house for dinner? Was this left from lunch?

OHHH sorry, I see now that they were from the night before. huh, weird gift... now a nice bottle of wine... even leftover wine, depending on who brought it. My dd has brought me leftover wine before, she didn't care for it. Thought I would like to try it. tee hee

Yuck, unbelievable, I agree! I also agree with Patti, that they should have brought nothing over that. I think I would have handled it like you did. Bravo for being a graceful hostess.

Did she say something like "We don't care for chips and salsa. Thought you might like them for a snack sometime?"

Are you and these friends in the habit of bringing something when they are invited to dinner?

In any case, I would have been polite, and as we tell our children, use your manners. I would have said Thank you, and put them aside and gone on with dinner.

The only way it would be possibly ok,is if when the waitress brought it to the table and they immediately said they wouldn't be eating them and to bring a container to put the chips and salsa in...UNTOUCHED!!!! Especially since they are good friends. Anything other than them doing that would be NOT right and I would have set them out and let THEM eat them, but I wouldn't have touched them! Who wants to eat other peoples leftovers?!!!!

I also would be a gracios host. I would serve it but not eat it.

I agree it's gross but if it's the best friend of your husband, he may have thought you would like it? I've given/eaten leftovers with my close friends so it's not that weird to me. Now a casual acquaintance would be strange! I guess it depends on the relationship.

My best friend is addicted to chips and salsa so she would be thrilled, haha. You handled it well.

Maybe it would have been Ok if they had just come from the restaurant~~and they had not eaten any or maybe even bought some fresh to bring~~~

ok here's the thing Chilies does Not give free chips and salsa you have to order it and pay for it, so if she brought it from Chilies it had to be what was left over after they ate their fill. It is a "never ending" chips and salsa so you can sit there for hours and eat lol or I guess you can have them bag up your leftovers and take them to a dinner party!
I'm sorry but that is beyond disturbing. I have taken some home but if you don't eat it right away it gets gross and the chips are soggy.
No way would I subject anyone to that. ick

I have a card sold by the local school team that gets me free chips and salsa at Chiles with purchase of an entree. It is possible they could get the chips and salsa for free.

I don't know abut free chips and salsa from Chili's but I know if you sign up for their email they send you coupons for free chips and queso and free chips and guacamole. I have those coupons right now.

I agree with adellabedella - sometimes you just have to laugh. Without knowing the people who brought the chips; I don't find it particularly insulting; I just find it very very odd. But hey, it takes all kinds, right? :)

OTOH, maybe someone's mom taught her never to go empty handed to someone's home...and this was all she could come up with. It wouldn't have been AS weird if she hadn't said what she did, characterizing her gift as 'leftovers'.

Hmmm...you don't keep guests waiting and waiting to eat dinner, do you? These folks haven't starved at your house before? (My mother was not a good cook, and dinner was always late, so forgive me if I'm 'way off base.)

I can't top that one but I can share another. My SIL complained that I do not have anything green to eat at Christmas. I usually had squash, mashed potatoes, corn, carrots as the vegetables along with turkey, ham and stuffing. Plum pudding and apple pie for desert. Most guests were seniors. Since I'd done the big Christmas dinner for 20+ guests for years, I suggested that if she wanted something green served, she might bring it. She never offered to contribute anything. She brought one small frozen package of brussel sprouts that year. I didn't know what to say... it's been a standing family joke since!

You get free chips and salsa in the bar area of the Chili's! Used to be they just brought them, but now you have to ask for them or have a server who will ask you if you want them. It is not advertised. Same with seating in the bar. You just go sit down if an open table, don't have to be seated. We just ate there last night and had free chips and salsa. I would never ask for them and then take them all home unlees I paid for them though.

I haven't been to Chili's for a long time but they were always free here.

This situation is strange. I probably would have tossed them. I want to give them the benefit of the doubt that there's something more to it but can't figure it out.

I would have said, "You keep the salsa...I will give the chips to the donkeys in the morning. Thanks."

I don't even eat my own left overs, as often as not, so I wouldn't eat anyone else's.

wow I thought I miss understood your post title but I guess not LOL. That is just weird...you handled it well but I would have my DH tell the guy not to do that next time. THE only way I would ever do this is a best friend who has teenagers around who might want it for a late nite snack BUT I would check w the friend while at the restaurant to see if their kids might want it. I have a GF who has 3 teenagers and is a single working mom barely making ends meet, she does take things like this along w my meal leftovers when I make a bunch of chili/soup/lasagna etc...I actually feel better giving stuff like that away, than throwing it out.

The wine mentioned above I think is different if it's handled like..."I don't like this instead of dumping down the drain would you like it?". Amoung friends I think wine shared is always appreciated LOL! ~ liz

I suppose I copuld be way offbase, but from a really good friend, I would've thought nothing of it. I have a friend like the bottle of wine person above. We share loads of things. Of course, we're both fairly poor, but if we waited for enough "stuff" for a gathering, it might not happen. And we're close. I could totally see an application it'd be ok. If they were not as close, I could see some objection to it. I'd just say thank you, dump it in bowls and let them eat it while I sat with them, never touching it. I just wouldn't let them know it. I might add another dish so it looked like a full buffet and that I was glad they'd thought of me? Probably. I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm saying, their intent was probably not unkind. I hope!

I think all of it may have been OK if it all was done in the same day~~~OP said they went to Chili's the night before? For me, I would worry about how they stored that salsa? Having worked in elementary cafe's for 20 years I am a freak about temps and storage also who touched it all???

I would have thanked them for the "doggie" bag and promptly called in my 2 pups and gave it to them, and then smiled sweetly and said.. "Not many folks ever remember to bring anything for my girls".. Thank you so much.. and the girls thank you too..

She obviously meant well, felt the food was expensive and would be appreciated. Not. I remember once my landlady came over to my apartment with half a can of tuna, asked if I wanted it, she was going to throw it out...I took it and placed it in my trash as soon as she was gone.
