Dishwasher question: does it matter where the vent is?

I recall reading somewhere that some dishwashers vent out the top and that it may cause problems with your countertops.

I found a Kenmore one that vents out the front (on the front panel).

I also like the Bosch and the Sears guy said they vent out the bottom?

Are there pros and cons to any of these?

I think you are talking about two different things. The air gap, if it's even needed, comes up through the counter and they are disgusting, and unless code requires it, completely unnecessary. Having the DW installed with a high loop of the waste water tubing will do the same thing.

Many DW also have a vent in the front for the steam to escape, which has nothing to do with the air gap. I would assume the location of that vent is irrelevant, depending more on how the DW looks to you.

I guess I'm talking about the steam vent. I didn't know about the air vent....that is an eyesore.

If the steam vents out the bottom (as in the Bosch I think), would that possibly hurt hardware floors over time?

Greendale..My goodness!! It was sooooooooooooooo pretty and then to see this happen..I would be so depressed... My E-mail is...mikerno_1@yahoo.com I am wondering if it is normal for die back like that just to come back when our days get warmer and longer? It is a bulb plant..Is it a perrenial in the south? I did not tell anyone that I bought one from Logee's way back when I before I joined here and it did the very same thing in less than a year. I wonder if this is common or natural? If so, then I threw away a perfectly normal looking plant going dormant than one that I thought I killed. Please, I would like to know it's behavior in cooler less lighter climates.. If this is the case, that it's normal leaf die back, then I am getting another as soon as I find out.. It looked so beautiful for you this past summer! Have you thought of trying the 5.1.1 mix so you never accidently let it dry out too much? I find they like to be even,y moist. Toni....I would think it would take forever to start from a bulb abd even a little 2 inch pot...That is whay I started this thread in the first place...If I have to wait forever to the blooms then I'll pass unless I can get a much bigger mature one. No, I do not think so unless there is a problem in the delivery. The other area might be if you are not happy with the appliance but it is not defective or it is defective and the defect is such that you would not want another one from the same company. Some places will take it back for a limited time, many will not. I would ask about that ahead of time and you may find you get different answers, although whether any place will honor what they tell you is a different matter. If your product just needs to be serviced within the regular warranty period, as long as the dealer was authorized to sell the product, it does not matter because the manufacturer services it, not the dealer. The warranties are expensive at Sears. I hate Sears because the price match thing is a hassle and the one time I tried it, they did not have the item in stock (neither did Lowes who had the best price). Since it was a fridge and I was desperate I ended up negotiating something with a local appliance store. We have bought from the local appliance place before and after but a couple of years ago they really tried to rook my DH on a big screen TV. He ordered a Sony from them that was about 200 cheaper (on 2000) at Amazon and every place else. We ended up canceling the order and I am no longer interested in buying from the small place. I am not using my hard earned money to subsidize the owner's new Infiniti (yes he does own one, I know him personally) Lowes often has the cheapest in our area but their price tends to fluctuate. I check online first. I bought a freezer a year ago from Lowes, my local small store would have charged over 100 more plus delivery. At Lowes it was free. The price did vary by about 50 from week to week and I made sure to get the low end. I have also used a web based Appliance Buy Phone Service. I had no problems, it was 100 cheaper than any place else. It was delivered by PC Richards which is a local appliance chain but was not sold by them

Herringbone patterns are most often, I think, laid out on a 45 degree grid, so that the chevron is clear. That's up to you, of course, and what looks best to you in the room you're putting it in. I almost always specify that the layout for patterned flooring begins at the center of the room, determined by chalk lines snapped from the centers of the walls. That can shift a bit, if the room has an irregular shape, and a different center point can be established where it makes the most sense. Then all the trimmed irregular bits that make the materials fit the floor land at the edges, where they have the least impact, and the pattern itself is centered in the space.

We live in California too and got an exception to avoid the air gap because we have a dishwasher that does not require it. I believe at the time, Miele and Bosch were the only two that have installation guides that do not require this, but that may have changed since then. We do have a high loop in the drain as well, but the inspector didn't require that--basically just looked at the manual and signed off that we had installed it in keeping with the manufacturer's instructions even though this was in conflict with local code. However, I think different inspectors have different philosophies on this; ours was particularly progressive on several code issues we were pushing (CA lighting requirements, air gap, etc.) and basically signed off on everything we had a sound argument for. It's worth exploring, though. I much prefer the counter without the air gap to clean around (and we have a wall-mount faucet, so it would have been the only hole in the counter).

I read about this recently on an older thread. I just purchased my dishwasher the other day, a KitchenAid KUDS50SVSS, and it has the vent at the very top near the countertop. It is a newer model, and comes with some sort of barrier that is to be installed directly underneath the countertop to I assume prevent moisture issues. I would imagine that this wold not be a problem with anything but a wood or laminate countertop.

I agree that I wouldn't be comfortable with a vent near the floor, as I am doing hardwoods. For the same reason, I probably wouldn't have been as comfortable with my choise if I did have laminate or wood tops, but I am doing soapstone, so I am not worried.

I agree that air gaps are gross. I haven't found out yet if it code in my county.

Thanks amberley! I may just go with the Kenmore where the vent is on the front of the door. It's not as nice as some of the others, but hopefully that's one appliance I can save a little money on.

We used our F&P dish drawers (vents out the top) with a plastic strip barrier for about 8 months under a laminate countertop that had a particle board substrate. Even with the barrier, the particle board was expanding and deforming the countertop from the steam.

You can try gluing heavy duty foil over a wider area - this is recommended by a couple of wood countertop guys..

I'd think that if you leave your dishwasher door cracked after running - like for flash drying - you'll have the problem no matter where the official vent is located.
